Title : Sir Mayard and the Mountain

Filename : mayard.bsp, mayard2.bsp

Date Finished : 18th of April, 1997

Author : David Jewsbury

Email Address : jewsbury@netspace.net.au

Description : Ummm... Just play in and find out.

Start it up, and relive the tale of Sir Mayard and the

			  Mountain.

Remember, though: this level has two parts! When you

get to the end of the first .bsp, it continues...

This .bsp exceeds the 1.4 Mb limit, so it won't run

on 8 meg machines! If you're running normal Quake

under windows, you should use the option -winmem 12

			  when you start Quake.

Just a warning: this level was designed on and for a

Pentium Pro 200. Heavy specs, I know, but you should

be fine if you can get 20 fps (or preferably 25-30)

at the start map entry pos.

Sorry, vis played havok with mayard.bsp. My beautiful

circular window is destroyed, and there are a few gray

			  faces!

But, if your computer can handle it, start Quake with:

			  quake +"r_maxsurfs 1200;r_maxedges 2900;map mayard"

To avoid gray faces and disappearing models.

(Heh, I've got a section all to myself :) )

Extra commands: : To start Quake with Sir Mayard in easy mode, type:

				quake +"skill 0;map mayard" -winmem 12

			  Or for hard mode:

				quake +"skill 2;map mayard" -winmem 12

Or for nightmare (or, as I call it, Jaws... mode):

				quake +"skill 3;map mayard" -winmem 12

For normal mode, load it up as with any other map.

Alternatively, you can just type in "skill n" at

the console, and then load up the map.

Additional Credits to : You've gotta thank id, that's a given.

			  Jorge Goutas (Jaws...) for testing.

Oh, and one of the graphics uses a scan from the pages

of my copy of The Fellowship of the Ring (Lord of the

Rings volume 1). I hope no-one minds, but if they do

just tell me and I'll take it out.

Greets to : Crash, who's web page makes the map-making

community a little bit more exciting

Matt Sefton, for SPQ another great web page,

even if he uses my old Doom .wad naming convention :)

And no, those last two weren't just to suck up and

get a place on their pages.

And anyone out there trying get a break in the very

			    sparse Australian games industry.

* Construction *

Base : New level from scratch

Editor(s) used : Stoneless... and ok, I admit it, back when Stoneless

wasn't even an idea, little bits of this level were

			  made in WorldCraft.

Known Bugs : Lot'sa gray faces and disappearing models (sorry)

See "Description" for a work around.

One of the floors doesn't seem to be solid - you fall

			  through to your waist

			  	- don't worry, you can still finish the level

Build Time : So incredibly long, it's just not funny.

These levels would have taken a liquid-cooled

Pentium Pro running at 400+Mhz many days to vis.

Put on my humble processor, clocked at only 200Mhz,

mayard.bsp took 180449 secs to vis -level 4

(Yes, that's more than 50 hours!)

			  But that's nothing.

			  Mayard2 took 409003 secs to vis -level 4. That's 4.7

days straight, and 6.8 days all up.

Construction Time	: All of my spare time that wasn't given Stoneless.

Because of my dedication to Stoneless, well, that

wasn't much. This level was built over a long period

of time - some parts are 4 months old.
