VIII. TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS

Release notes

Certain SCO UNIX systems appear to have a problem with filelocking over NFS.
If you are experiencing a problem, then select the option NOT to use file
locking when defining your HOST using the Host Editor. Contact SCO for the
latest SLS to NFS.

Certain other NFS system experience problems mounting using root id. Test
with a new, normal user id if you have these problems.

Simararly, certain NFS systems have problems exporting the root (/) directory.
Test by only exporting a normal user directory

TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS - mounting a drive
---------------------------------------
1) Make sure you can ping your host using its hostname from a DOS box in Win 95.

2) Make sure that in Start...Settings...Control Panel...Networks, it lists
and entry for Omni-NFS 95. If it doesnt use Client..Add to add it and reboot.

3) Make sure your PC has an IP address defined and a default gateway defined
in Properties for MS TCP/IP.

4) Make sure your host is defined as an NFS Server using the Omni NFS 95 Host Editor
and it is listed in the Host List window as such.

5) Check you can connect using FTP or VT420 to your designated host using its
hostname.

6) Add the PC IP Address and Host name to your HOSTS file on the UNIX
system and check you can ping it from the UNIX end.

7) Verify the host appears if you select Network Neighborhood..Entire
Network. If you click on the host, do any directories appear?

8) Check on your UNIX system that the directories you require are
listed in the output from the exportfs -a command.

9) Check those directories are not listed with read/write permission
restrictions or with mount access restricted to designated hosts, both at
directory level and in the EXPORTS file. If you are using NIS, make similar
checks on the NIS master server and verify your PC has permission to access
the directories/host concerned.

10) If you are mounting without pcnfsd, check the uid and gid for your
user name have correct the access permission to the directory and
they can read and write files into it.

11) In NFS 95 Drive Define, check you have saved the password when you have
 defined the drive.

12) If you are using pcnfsd and you have a single pcnfsd server taking care
of authentication, make sure it listed in Network..Properties for NFS or
NFS 95 ..Utils as the authentication server.

13) If you are not using a single pcnfsd authentication server, make sure
the Authentication server is set to 0.0.0.0 or is blank in Network..Properties
for NFS or NFS 95 ..Utils.

If all this fails, attempt to mount your home directory
only using your own username and password on a single host using the supplied
version of pcnfsd.c compilied for your machine. If this works then
start to eliminate culprits by adding a variable one at a time.

Troubleshooting Tips - mounting a printer
-----------------------------------------
Use the Add printer wizard. If no printers appear when using the
Browse command:

1) Check for similar problems described in the section above.

2) To mount a printer, you MUST be using pcnfsd.

3) Check /usr/spool is exported. You MUST mount /usr/spool. Omni-NFS 95 does
not support alternate or symbolically linked spool directories.

4) Make sure /usr/spool is accessible to all users and has correct read/write
permissions.

If you can find the printer, but print does not appear successfully:

5) Check that you have set the UNIX printer as a dumb printer if you are
using a Windows printer driver. If you are using UNIX to perform print
formatting, make sure you have set up Windows to use a Generic print driver.

6) Make sure you can send output successfully to the printer from UNIX.

7) Use the Add Printer Wizard from Windows 95. At the end of the procedure,
you will be prompted to print a Test Page. Use the Microsoft Print
Troubleshooting procedure to help diagnose the problem.
