"TREE RESTORE" is FREE to all "donors" (see "Conclusion" at bottom of
"PC-LINK.TXT") on how to become a "donor" and get "Tree Restore"):

If your PC contains files and/or sub-directories/folders with LFNs (long
filenames), "Tree Restore" allows you to save (source PC) and restore
(destination PC) the LFNs. A way around "Tree Restore" to preserve LFNs is
to use "WinZip" on the folder/s or tree/s, then transfer the .ZIP file/s.

WINDOWS 95/98/ME/XP "Start" & "Run" (No installation required):

You can launch "PC Link" in Windows (no installation). Example: If you
put "PC-LINK.EXE" in "UTILS" (example) folder, click on "Start", then "Run"
and type "C:\UTILS\PC-LINK" and press Enter or click "OK". It's that
simple!

"RESEND" COUNT (top right side), USUALLY "0", DISPLAY:

During transfers, a bytes count for each file is displayed at the top
right side. Below it is a number, usually "0", which is a count of how many
times a "block" was resent during a transfer process because it didn't pass
validation.

  TIP:

If you intend to use "PC Link" often, put "PC-LINK.EXE" in "COMMAND"
folder, folder in "WINDOWS". Doing this has the effect of adding a new
command/utility to the list of Dos commands, and you can launch it as you do
any Dos command.

  VERY IMPORTANT WINDOWS NOTE:

Due to a swap file (example: "WIN386.SWP") which prevents access when
Windows is "running", do NOT select files in the Windows directory/folder or
transfer the "WINDOWS" tree or an entire disk if you launched "PC Link" via
"Start" & "Run" or in a Dos "box". You must use Dos mode as follows (two
ways):

  1. During bootup, when (if) you see the message, "Starting Windows 95/98",
press the F8 key. Next, select "Command prompt only". If your PC doesn't
display that message, consult the manual on how to intercept the boot up
sequence for Dos mode (Windows not launched).

  2. Prepare to close (shut down) Windows & PC. You are presented with an
option to restart your computer in Dos. Restart your computer in Dos.
Note: Simply type "EXIT" to restart Windows.

SPINNING "PIXEL" IN DESTINATION AS "OK" FLAG:

After you have both PCs connected and you launched "PC Link" in both
computers, when the menu is displayed in the source PC, before you do
anything, view the destination PC and see if the "pixel" is spinning. If it
is, all systems are "go". If it isn't, you will not be able to transfer
anything. Check your "laplink" type cable connection, etc.

"BREAKOUT" (Press Left Shift Three Times):

If you "activate" (press "S") "PC LINK" in a computer without a connection
to another PC, or "PC LINK" isn't launched in the other (destination) PC, a
"lockup" will occur when you get to the menu due to a lack of
"communication". Simply press left shift three times to "breakout". Note:
Repeat this on the other PC, if both PCs are "locked up".

During normal use, it would be very rare for you to use this function. I
did not have to use it in all the tests (and uses) that I made after the
program was finished. It was useful to me during the early development of
the program until I perfected the I/O procedures. This saved me the trouble
of restarting the computer/s. If you ever use "breakout", disregard
information displayed on the screen. This information was important to me
during the development stages.

  TESTS AND USE RESULTS:

I have used and tested PC Link many times on 8 computers from a 286
(12Mhz) to a Pentium (800Mhz) without any problems.
