I found that with a 1000-SX you had to cut line 13 in order to make it
compatible with an IBM compatible printer. Other than that, no problem.

I don't think I would like a modem with the error protocol handle by
software either. I thought Zoom was a popular brand of modem. I see them
every where I go and I always here people talking about them. The only
reason I have an Intel is that they bought it for me at work so I could call
in from home (and call everywhere else <G>). Oh well, good luck on your

Hi -

I don't know the exact answer to your problem but the A20 line (or gate) is
what permits your system to access memory above the 1mb boundary. For some
reason or another, the A20 doesn't recognize that you have extended memory
installed on your PC.

My MS-DOS book says for trouble shooting himem.sys:

in the config.sys file change the line to:

device=c:\dos\himem.sys /cpuclock:on /v

save the file and reboot. Run MSD to determine if himem.sys is loaded. If
this still doesn't work, you may have to specify a machine number:

device=c:\dos\himem.sys /cpuclock:on /v /machine:x

where x is the machine number. The machine number can be from 1 to 16. I
didn't see a machine number for your specific computer but the books says
just to try different ones to find out what works. Ones I would try first
would be 1, 3 or 8 but if these don't work try the others. If none of this
works, hey, I tried! :)

Hi Mike -

I believe the Tandy 1000 series had its CGA card built into the board so all
you had to do is plug in the monitor. If you wanted to run it on a PC that
has a VGA card, I believe you need to disable the VGA card (or remove it)
and put in a CGA card. Because of the inherent differences between CGA and
VGA, I don't think you could get a CGA to work on a VGA card. You could
check with a local computer repair shop and inquire if they have any CGA
adapters laying around. You could probably get one cheap. :)

     RE: HELP!!!!!!!! (Re: Msg 22964)
     From: DAIRYLADY To: GIZMO23

Hi, Frank!

Before deciding that the hard drive is "blown," there are a few things to
check. First of all, open the thing up and look for loose connections,
particularly where the adaptor card is seated in the slot and wires plug in.

Hard drives are also prone to power surges from lightning strikes, but
that is usually such a powerful blow that other things are wrong too, so
don't give that your first consideration. (I'm working on a friend's 1000RLX
right now that took a iightning strike that fried everything on the mother
board for about 1-1/2 inches around the connection from the serial port
where she had an external modem plugged in. Of course, the modem was ruined,
and her telephone lines, too.)

Next, boot up with your floppy in A:, then, if you have the DeskMate
desktop as your opening screen, press <Esc> to exit to the DOS prompt,
and type "D:" <Enter>, and see if the computer acknowledged anything there.
(If you type "C:", you won't know if it is ROM or the hard drive.) Now,
type "dir/p" and, if it is ROM there, you will get a short list of
files, and at the end it will say something like "0 Bytes Free." Now, go back
to "C:", and and type "dir/p" again. Look for your AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS files, and examine them by typing "type autoexec.bat" and "type
config.sys" at the DOS prompt, or turn the printer on and type "type
autoexec.bat > prn", etc. You can copy them (exactly, of course) into a
message here and let us take a look if you think there is a problem with
either one of them. If you do that, you will get lots of different
suggestions on what to do next, and there are several ways to skin a cat, so
there may be several correct answers. A matter of personal preference.

Next, you should type "SETUPTL2" at the C:> prompt (or A:> prompt, if C:
turned out to be ROM), and check all the parameters as they are currently
set. Just follow the prompts, but jot down what you found, and let us know.
As long as you have a working boot disk to start the computer with, you can
safely change parameters in this program if you think anything is wrong. If
you make changes, you will have to reboot for them to take effect. Do this
by first taking the disk out of the floppy drive, then press the red "panic"
button on the CPU, labeled "reset," or - if the TL/2 didn't have one - press
<Ctrl+Alt+Del>. Let us know what happens, but don't worry if everything is
still the same. Once we know you've done all these things, then we will know
what else needs to be done. Sure, you may end up taking something in for
repair in the end, but at least you will have ruled out the basics as the
source of the problem.

By the way, does anybody else in the family use your computer?

                                            Sue

No, I don't have a hard drive. The mail order companies want about
400.00 for a drive, and that's too expensive. Especially, when you consider
that radio schack is selling entire systems for about 900.00 dollars.

I don't want to sell my 1000tl until I find a suitable replacement.
With the huge leaps in technology every few years, it should be possible to

Thanks. I would love to have it. I could only dream of a computer with 4
megs and a math co-processor. Does it have a hard drive? Is the tape
cartridge device like a tape backup drive? I probably wouldn't be interested
in the XENIX stuff, as I know nothing about it. As for the tape cartridge
device, I would need to know what to do to the jumper so I can use it with DOS.

Now that I have asked all the tough questions....I am located in the Shenandoah
valley in VA. Do you travel through there? I am in Bridgewater, near
Harrisonburg, and not too far from Staunton. Do you ever go near these places?
I imagine if you could pack it safely in any box, you could probably pick up a
large box at your local grocery store. Lots of times they just throw them out,
and even at one local store they set them out in a corner of the store in case
someone needs them. Oh, by the way, if you do send it or get it to me however,
please include the manuals if you have them. I'd call you, but I don't think
my parents would think much of a long-distance phone call. When are you on

Wesley, the tape is an external tape storage device, called Tandy TCS 100.
I've got six tapes to go along with it, these are the 1/4" Data Tape
Cartridges, Tandy Cat # 26-1391. Any Radio Shack Computer Center will know
how to set the jumpers, they shouldn't charge you for that.

The 3000HD has a 40 meg hard disk, and the 5 1/4 floppy 1.2 meg. If you get
a 3 1/2" floppy, you should make that Drive A, load DOS 6 or higher, and
DoubleSpace drive C. This will give you close to 80 meg on the hard disk.

I've got enough computer boxes to pack everything. Remeber, the CM-1 color
monitor isn't working too well, the colors keep changing...

I'll try to get everything packed up and ready for shipment - I suspect UPS
will cost a good amount, probably in the $30 to $50 range...

Let me know whether you can get you parents to spring for the shipping charges.

We are planning to go to Florida in late August, usually take I95, but we have

Hmmmmm....$30 to $50? That sounds like a lot, but maybe you are right. You
might weigh it or whatever and call UPS or whatever and try to get a close
figure. I'd appreciate that much if it isn't too much trouble. Are you sure
it is a CM-1 monitor? I have a CM-5 (CGA 320x200), I thought maybe you made
a typo and meant CM-11 which is a 640x400 monitor. Is that CGA? Or maybe I
should say TGA (16-color tandy) If it is, I could use my CM-5 if it doesn't
work. Do you think it would be something cheap to fix? I'll try to log on
about 8:30 and page you. What do you use that tape device for? Is it used
like a backup device or as storage device (like the old cassette tape things)?

Hopefully I can afford the shipping costs. I'll have to wait till I get the
money and then get my parents to send you a check for it. Let me know if you
find out a little closer to what it will cost. Is there anything else wrong
with it other than the screwy monitor?

Thanks again, and cya!

     From: CHAINNJ To: WESF

Hi Wesley -
I finally dug out the machine and here is what it is:
Tandy 3000 HD with a 40 Meg hard disk
I've loaded DOS 6.2 and double spaced, which gives you about 50 Meg free.
Memory: the orginal 640, plus 2 Meg added
Math Co-Processor for a 286 (i.e. a 287?)
Multi-user card, which gives you four additional serial ports.
One standeard parrallel printer port, plus one standard serial port
A tape cartridge card, to run the Tandy (Colorado) tape drive
Software - MS DOS low density diskettes to bring you up to DOS 6.0
software for installing the tape cartridge device, but no manual
        a set-up diskette, but it only configures 5 1/4 floppies, not 3 1/2.
Possibly Radio Shack can provide a newer version??
Hardware: Tandy 3000 HD, The tape system, CM-1 (yes, that's correct) color
monitor which works fine, except as it warms up, the colors change,
but everything is still legible - maybe it just needs to get to be
used more, so that the moisture dries up?
Memory power battery went bad, I just ordered a replacement from Tandy for
$18.75 - the batery lasts about 4 years, so you'll need to put in a
new one in 1998, or you'll loose the configuration in memory...
Shipping: I am guessing, based on what UPS charges me when I send boxes to
        my kids in college.

Everything should be ready to gout this weekened (if Tandy ships the battery
as promised). Come and get it..., or I'll take it to UPS on Monday for
shipment to you, trusting that you'll get your parents to re-imburse the
shipping charges. (Can you do without an allowance for a while? That's
how I do business with my kids...)

I suggest you leave your full address, etc. for me on email, and I'll
leave mine, so you know where to send the check.

Hope this will work for you. Best regards.

Wesley,

The CM-1 is a 640x400 color monitor used on the Tandy 2000 and 3000. It
is not compatible with CGA, EGA, VGA, or anything else. You are likely
to have problems with programs that write directly to the screen; just
bear that in mind.

disadvantage is that it won't run VGA programs (vga graphics).

Are you talking about the 640x200 16-color mode on the 1000SL/TL/RL?
If so, it's incompatible with EGA ... don't know what you mean when you
say that some programs will recognize it as EGA. More information would

Before disassembling your computer, it is a good idea to backup any important

Wes, the equipment was bought in 1986, so it's pretty old. The CM-1 was the
first color monitor Tandy came up with. I have only a few manuals, you'll
need to figure things out yourself, except for the multi-user board.
The tape drive was made by Colorado, there are a couple of DOS diskettes
to go with it, the rest should be self-explanatory. I'll park the HD,
of course. Haven't received the clock backup battery as yet, but expect it
this weekend (trust Tandy).

I'll get everything shipped off to you once I have your full address and a
check for $80. If shipping is less, will send you a check for the
difference -

Regards, Carl

PS The setup is via a setup diskette (included) which does not give you
the choice of a 1.44 Meg drive!

From the files ...

"In computers [...] interlaced scanning can still result in a
flickering image in detailed areas of the picture, so nearly
all computer displays are "progressive" or non-interlaced. To
go beyond 192 (for Color Computer) or 225 (Tandy 1000) active
lines you have to run a higher horizontal scan rate -- more
lines per second, and therefore more lines per field. The VM-1
and CM-1 displays ran their horizontal sweep at approximately
25 kHz, as opposed to the 15.734 kHz rate of U.S. TV, to get
their 400-active-line non-interlaced display; EGA monitors run
at about 21.85 kHz, and VGA gets up to 31.5 kHz (about 35 kHz
for 800x600 SuperVGA). These monitors are also "underscanned"
so that the active picture area is completely visible on the
picture tube surface." CGA runs at the same horizontal scan
rate as TV, but is noninterlaced.
Tandy once (1989) marketed an EGA card for the CM-1 (part
number 25-3048, $249, "supports EGA, CGA, MDA, Plantronics and
Hercules graphics"); an ordinary EGA card will not work,
however. The CM-1 was used with the Tandy 2000, and Tandy's
EGA card is the only way to connect it to a standard PC. There
is a file on the CM-1 in the PC-SIG database, General topic, on
Delphi: CM1 INFORMATION, by Marty Goldman.

Check out Marty's file.
It's still there. - tvdog

What model do you have, and is it the original video or have you upgraded?

It is possible to write a TSR to make programs believe you have EGA, but
it wouldn't do you any good if you don't actually have it; the programs
wouldn't run.

If what you have is Tandy video (original equipment on most 1000's), then
possibly Pga Pro Tour is detecting and using it. The video driver might
be internal (part of the main .exe file). Games often use a low-resolution
VGA mode for speed, so you might see the same type of screen as your
friend. That's my guess, anyway.

OM

Try starting up from the DOS diskette, to see whether you can get a C: drive
at all, then do a backup. Leave off the tape drive completely to start out
with. If you can get BIOS to recognize the hd, you may need to re-install
DOS on it.

Possibly the double spacing has something to with it, too...

If worse comes to worse, re-format the hd (type 11, but read the instructions
about heads and cylinders - it's REALLY non-standard)

I have no backup of anything.

Ultimately, totally erase the hd and install XENIX. That will be an
intellectual

If you need to reach me again, leave message in e-mail, since I don't usually
check the Tandy sig. NO MORE TANDY FOR ME ...!!!

Hi Bill -

Your message was a little jumbled but I thought that the limitations on the
size of the hard drive you could use was dependant on the version of DOS you
are using. With earlier versions of DOS (prior to v5) DOS could only support
a partition size of 32mb with a maximum of 4 partitions (a 128mb hard drive
divided up into 4 logical drives of 32mb each). With DOS 5 and later, I
don't believe there is that limitation anymore.
