Pick up an issue of PCM Magazine and check out the ads. A few places you
might consider would include MEGAHAUS (1-800-426-0560), DCS Industries
(1-800-537-3539) and DC DRIVES (1-800-872-6007). I've dealt with the former
ttwo, but not with DC DRIVES. My experiences with both MEGA and DCS were
very favorable. Another source to try would be Hard Drives International.
(1-800-359-0322). They have an excellent repitition as well. Like MegaHaus,
they specialize in hard drives, or at least they used to. They now have a

Hi George -

I don't know if you're familar with this magazine (heaven forbid, if your a
Tandy owner) but you need to check out PCM. This magazine deals strictly
with Tandy computers and all of it's advertisers deal with Tandy add-ons and
what not. I'm not going to go as far and say that all of their advertisers
are top notch, but I don't think you would have any problems with most of
them. DCS Industries sells a wide range of Tandy add-ons and you could
probably get all of what you wanted from them. I've dealt with Mega-Haus and
I don't have any complaints, good price and fast service. My recommendation
is to get a copy of PCM, but your won't find it at any newsstand. They only
distibute through certain retailers, so you may have to look around for it.
Locally, I can find my copy at Walden Books. I hope this helps!

     From: TVDOG To: GLENTZ

The floppy drives on the TL/3 draw power through the data cable. That is
why there is no power connector on your old A: drive. A standard floppy
drive takes power through a separate cable, of course, so it is necessary
to disable the power coming through the data cable to install one of these
drives. Basically, you need a data cable with some holes punched in it.

If you had two recognized drives on the same number (i.e., both 0), what
should happen is that both drives respond when you try to access them. Both
drive lights come on, and you get a "general failure" error from DOS.

In your case, what happens is that the system will not boot at all, no
power, no nothing. It is likely that your system is being shorted out by
the drive. This could cause damage to the power supply, the drive, and/or
the motherboard.

So: get a cable. I don't know where, though. Check DCS: 1-800-537-3539.

T2000 file structure and disk format
     From: ZOGSTER To: ALL

 Hello. I have a Tandy 2000 with 384K memory, 2 80-track floppies, and a
10-meg hard drive. I am using it primarily for a terminal to upload and
download files with, and need some help.

I use a Color Computer 3 running OS-9 level 2 to write Basic programs, and
have been using the 2000 to transfer these files with because my multi-pak went
down. To do this, I have been using a utility called pcdos to copy files to
the 2000. I haven't
been able to copy files back however, because pcdos won't read a file copied to
the disk from the 2000. The same problem exists with a disk formatted with the
2000, either with the standard format utiliy or with pcmaker.

I had to use a friend's 286 to format a disk that pcdos could read and write
to. I since found that another friend's 386's format was deemed not a dos
diskette by pcdos. I have grown weary of this problem and wish to find another
solution. I have decided to remedy this by trying to write my own utility to
access the disks with, but I need to know more about the 2000's file structure
and disk format
, as well as how the FAT table is dealt with by dos. Since my frien's 286
format command informed me that pcmaker's format is not the same as his, I
assume that the standard of disk format and file structure between any two
different models of dos machine
are not necessarily the same. Is the same true of 2000's in general, or are
they all the same? (I think that they are since they are all Tandy <grin>)

I would appreciate any help I can receive on this. Please make any replies to
me e-mail, as I'll get them much faster that way, and I can respond more
quickly.

Thank you.

There was a little utility to do what you want on the SimTel database
called "SWAPPORT", but upon checking a little while ago I was not able to
find it.

If you have Internet access you could FTP the file "lptcom02.zip" from
141.210.10.117 (the primary mirror site for the SimTel database). Look
for it in the directory "/pub/msdos/printer".

In any case, I'll dig around here and see if I've still got a copy of
"SWAPPORT". If I find it I'll ZIP it and Email it to you.

     From: STANB To: WESF

Wesley,

I was not able to find "SWAPPORT". Too bad it is no longer listed in the
SimTel database. When I needed it at work I found it to be a nice little
utility that worked like a charm. Perhaps the reason it was dropped from
SimTel is that recent versions of MS-DOS have a utility that will do the
same thing (I don't know this for a fact because I'm running Version 3.2).

In any case, I've included a DEBUG script called "SWAPLPT" that was submitted
to PC Computting by Janet A. Carra and was published in their December 1990
issue. Here's how to process the enclosed script. (If you already know how
to process DEBUG scripts, forgive me for giving instructions that you are
already aware of.)

1) Save this message to a file. Call it SWAPLPT.SCR.
2) Edit the file so that only the lines beginning with "N SWAPLPT.COM" and
   ending with "Q" remain.
3) Check in your DOS directory to make sure that the file "DEBUG.COM" is
present and that your DOS directory is in your PATH.
4) Type: "DEBUG < SWAPLPT.SCR" (without the quotes, of course).
5) When DEBUG is done processing SWAPLPT.SCR, you should find a new file,
   "SWAPLPT.COM".
6) Copy SWAPLPT.COM to a directory that's in your path.

Issuing the command, SWAPLPT, should then direct all printer output to LPT2.
SWAPLPT purports to accomplish the same thing as the SWAPPORT I mentioned
in my earlier message.

I believe that issuing the command a second time will direct output back to
LPT1.

I haven't tried this particular utility, so I don't know for a fact that it
works. But, I've had good success with other such utilities published in PC
Computing. If you have trouble processing this DEBUG script, let me know and
I'll Email the SWAPLPT.COM file to you.

Here is the DEBUG script:

Hello,
I bought a copy of the February PCM today and it is really good.
Modems are making great advances in their capabilities. I have a 2400 bps
modem and it is reasonably fast, but to have something ten times faster
would be wonderful.

I remember from my data communications class that bandwidth is very
important in telecom. Of course, standard voice communications equipment
only carries frequencies from 300 to 3,000 herz. How can a modem operate
over telephone equipment using a frequency of 9600 or 14,000?

The file error checking and compression are performed by either
v.32bis, v.42, v.42bis, or MNP 5 (also class 2, group III). Like before, it
will be necessary to check the hi-speed modems compatibility to other
systems. Cool, you know, combining v.42bis with a 14.4k modem will give you
an effective throughput of 4 * 14.4k, which is 57.6k bits per second.

Now I don't know if it would be worthwhile to but a new Radio Schack
computer. There are certain features that a consumer must have, like a CD
and a hi-speed modem. Serapions

Hi Rob -

Nope, I don't have any problems running a high speed modem on my 2100. I'm
running it on com2 right now but I originally had it hooked up on com4 and it
worked fine there, too. From reading your message, it sounds like your
trying to run the terminal program that is supplied in Windows? If so,
forget that thing and get another program. Very few people I've ever talked
to have ever got that Windows terminal running and those that did were very
disatisfied with it. One thing to consider if your running out of Windows,
and that is the comm program might be using the serial port settings
specified by Windows. Those settings may be throwing things out of whack, if
it is only happening in Windows. Try to run the same program in DOS and in
Windows to see if you get different results. If you do, something in Windows
is the culprit.

    Hi Jeff,
Well that's good to know, at least I know it's not the computer. The reason
I had asked is I know there were some Gateway's last year that where having
hardware conflicts when trying to run high speed modems.

>> From reading your message, it sounds like your trying to run the
>>terminal program that is supplied in Windows?
No. gave up on that along time ago, I have tried using Telemate in a
window and from DOS at 19,200 and up, Telix from DOS and in a DOS window
at all different speeds got 2 good downloads out of 5, D-Lite at 9600 which
isn't bad and Unicom, no luck. Once in a while it will really fly at about
1706cps and I'll get the perfect download, but 8 out of 10 times I get error
after error and have even been thrown out of a Zmodem download a few times.
I think it might be a bad chip, I went over everything from the system.ini
to the comports and addresses, IRQ's nothing. I think I will exchange it and
get a replacement.
Have you every figured how to run a modem out of COM3 and keep your mouse?
Did you have to disable your external Serial port on com2 in order to use
your modem there? I am trying to figure out how to install 2 modems one in
COM2 the other at IRQ5/COM3 and it won,t work. Tandy support said move the
3rd jumper on the I/O board high and I did and that didn't work.
Sorry for all the questions, I am at the end of my rope with the modem?

Hi Rob -

A modem wizard, I'm not but I looked through one of my manuals and saw a
couple of things of interest. One paragraph states:

If you are using a mouse (or have a mouse driver installed), a scanner, a
serial printer or any other device on com1, this will conflict with the use
of an internal modem on com3. In this case use com4. It is also possible
that a network or game card can cause conflicts.

It states that you can configure your modem to use irq2 or irq5 to get
around some of these conflicts if you have a need to run multiple serial
devices at one time. The other alternative it states is to disable one of
the devices that you won't need in order to run another. I don't know what
else to tell you in regard to wanting two modems hooked up at the same time.

As far as downloading, I've never had a problem downloading from Telemate.
D-Lite only gives me about a 50-50 success rate on downloading. One thing
you may want to consider, is a problem I ran into after I first got this
14.4 modem. Sometime the error correction protocol between two modems aren't
100% compatible and may give you problems, especially on Delphi. When I
disable it, I notice a difference in the communications. To issue that
command on my modem, I send it an AT\N0 and it will disable it. Maybe some
of all this might help. Let me know or maybe someone more knowledgable will
jump in.

I can see that you are having a problem getting this message to "stick" in
Forum, John. Please try again.

It may be that you are not using "hardware flow control," Rob. This is a
feature of the comm program that you are using. Also, your modem init string
may be telling the modem to use "data compression modem" when the modem you
are connecting to does not have this capability.

     Tandy OS/2 Support Non(Existent
     From: FEUSTEL To: ALL

I've got a Tandy Sensation on which I run OS/2, no thanks to Tandy. Since
tandy provides no os/2 drivers for the cdrom, I've added a SCSI controller and
an external Toshiba CDROM. I will never buy another Tandy since that company
has repeatedly demonstrated that support ends with the sale.

Hi Jeff,
   Thanks for all the information.

>>If you are using a mouse (or have a mouse driver installed), a scanner, a
serial printer or any other device on com1, this will conflict with the use
of an internal modem on com3. In this case use com4.

Yes, thats what I tried and the BIOS puts it in as COM3, whenever you
skip a Comport like that it fills in the vacancy.

That's something I haven't tried, I will give it a shot thanks.
I think I am going to send it back Monday and exchange it for another one.
I have never heard of anyone having this kind of trouble, I think it could
be a faulty chip. Well, thanks again, I will let you know what happens.

Hi Mike,
I set it under windows and on 3 of the 5 telecomm programs I have tried and
still no luck, it is also set on the modem.

Now this is something similar to what Jeff mentioned, I am going to try
that, Thanks.

I will have to disagree with this one, something I usually don't do, but
the service for me has been great. I had a few minor problems after I bought
my 2100 and the salesman came out to my house after work and spent 3 hours
tweaking the machine and installed several utilities. He also gave me his
home # and said call anytime you have a problem. I also Faxed something to
them in the morning and had an answer back that afternoon and to top that
the salesman runs a BBS for his customers and I have picked up many a good
tip. Hope things work out.

     Dos vs Windows
     From: DIGBY To: ALL

I have a friend who has a new Tandy Sensation Multi-Media computer. It's her
first computer, and I have given her a few games I don't use anymore to get
her started. I have a 286 and no Windows, so all my programs are DOS.
One of the games I gave her is a Bridge program that was originally on a
5 1/4 disk, so I copied it to a 3 1/2 and she tried loading and running on
her Tandy through DOS. She keeps getting a message "corrupted disk or file",
but when I reinstalled it using that same disk on my machine it ran perfectly.
I erased and reinstalled twice to be sure; and also tried it on another DOS
computer with no problems. Is there something she should be doing in Windows
to run this in DOS? Is the problem that her Tandy is so much newer than my
286 that they're not compatible?? I'd like to know because I'm thinking of
getting a Sensation, but if I can't run my old programs it's not worth while.
