     From: WTHEILACKER To: MISAL

Mike,
I went and tried jax's suggestion (see msg # 18715) of reformating the
drive and encountered even greater problems with my new HD/controller. after
using debug and initializing the drive I attempted to run FDISK (after rebooting
of course) and the program hung up not allowing me to create a partition. After
entering debug again I noticed that the data I had entered was altered somehow.
I reinitialized the drive a second time and after attempting FDISK again noticed
that there where eronious characters in place of the data I had entered. I could
not get the drive up and running so I switched back to my original 20MB IDE
drive. Could I be experiencing a problem with my Seagate ST-11R controller
card?
                                Bill

P.S. Jax, if you have any ideas on what I might have done wrong or might have
happened please jump in! Thanks...Bill

Bill,
You may be using a controller that conflict's with the TL/2's built in IDE
interface somehow. I have the original TL without IDE stuff in it. Someone who
is more familar with the TL/2 could probably help you better than me. I have no
experience with the IDE stuff that's in the TL/2. Did you use the SETUPTL2.COM
program to disable the HardDisk Chip Select option? This may need to be on with
the IDE stuff built in or it may need to be off. Try both ways. Also, are you
sure the Drive is setup properly VIA dip switches etcetra and so on? Well, Keep
us informed on how you're doing and we'll help where we can...Jax...

     Modem help!
     From: LAMARTH To: ALL

Hi!

I wanted to ask anyone who's been using a 2400 baud internal on a Tandy 1100 FD
portable if they've ever had trouble with line noise, and what (if anything) can
be done about it. I've been getting noise on my system- so much so where I
can't upload or download anything, but I can hook up another computer to the
same line and have very little trouble with noise at all (occasional glitches
but nowhere NEAR as bad as with the 1100 FD).

Is this something that can be adjusted, or is it more likely that I have a
faulty modem card? Any ideas I would gladly appreciate!

Hi Jax!! I'm using a original Tandy 1000 with the Panasonic printer.
My computer use is strictly for "hobby" use. Should have had a computer years
ago to help do the office work when I had a business. Oh well. That's life
I guess. I'm always a day late or a dollar short.

What was that KXP 1091 you mentioned ?. Was it a 9 pin DMP by chance?
I was using a 'cheap' Tandy 9 pin before the Panasonic. Don't remember what
model # that printer was. Gave it to my Grandson , and he had nothing but
grief with it. Don't understand that because it never gave me any problems.
I think maybe he was using a hammer to make darker printouts.

Well, guess I go look around the Forums. Talk to you later,

DMP 2.04 (new version) should make your printer useful. If you know the printer
codes (in the manual) for the 110, this should get it going for you. You will
have to do a little reading and some work to get DMP setup for the 110. But,

Unfortunately this is the case Joe. That Memory can only be used for the special
Video functions used by Tandy 1000 Graphics. There isn't any software that I
know of that can actually use that memory. I'm not saying it can't be written,
but I myself wouldn't know where to begin since it is VRAM and not DRAM. Maybe
someone more versed in how memory type work could give you a better reason why
it can't be done, but from what I've been told about VRAM, it's mapped and
handled by the CPU in a much different way than conventional memory. Now if
there was some way to add that 128K to you VGA video Memory, that might be nice,
but like I said, no one has written a program to do it yet. I'm in the same boat

Don't worry, the sizes shown are NORMAL for MS-DOS type machines. The reason the
same file takes up so much space on the E: drive is because drive partitions
smaller than 16K (I think) just do. It's an unfortunate fact of PC life.
Floppies, on the other hand, should not be the same. I read a whole page about
this stuff somewhere...I think it was PC Sources. It goes in to further detail

In PC-Compatibles Database, under the Utility Topic, look for DMP 2.04, Jim.
This program will "intercept" and change printer codes before they are sent to
the printer. What this means is that you could choose the IBM Proprinter from
the your Word Processor and change the code to suit the Gemini. It also has the
option to "embed" Gemini codes in the doucment. Try it, I think you will find it

When a hard drive is formatted, it is done in unit called clusters. Depending on
what DOS verions you use, these clusters can be 2,048 bytes (DOS 3.3) or 4,096
bytes (DOS 4.x).

When you save a file, it is saved in units called sectors. If the file is only
one byte, it will take a whole sector -- but it should not take a whole cluster!

What did you use to format the hard drive and what were your choices when you
partitioned it with FDISK?

Deskmate: You said it right when you refered to Deskmate 2's text editor. That
is exactly what it is,a text editor and not a word processor. the HX with full
memory will run most any word processor out there. You do have the drawback of
one disk drive. There are a few good word processors right here on delphi that
you can download and try before you purchase (register) it.

The Hx can hook up to any IBM compatible printer. I would sugest one with a true
epson driver. All tandy's current line of printers have gone to epson
compatible, instead of Tandy / IBM drivers. (epson / IBm drivers in the current
tandy printers, that is). You will need Tandy's own cable though, because of the
different connection (edge card) on the HX. Be careful. There are 2 versions of
cables. 26-225 for HX to Tandy printers (thru the DMP 134) and 26-289 for HX to
industry standard printers.

If what you say about only wanting this system for word processing, and not on a
large scale basis, you have made an OK choice. Personaly I don't like the
keyboard ( I am typing on it now). The HX does the job for what I need though. I
do have the second drive.

It may be posible to get the external drive for the HX at the close out price.
If you can find a 3 1/2 inch version, you might consider snaping it up, removing
it from the case, and installing it in the HX. Good luck Cecil

WITH direct screen writes (but still no graphics). I still have one screwy
problem with the HD - it needs a 5 minute warm-up before the computer can find

years as the store system - they said the service guys never could fix it). For
its age, its a pretty decent machine.

Chuck,
I can't really help you on the Stack error problems but I can answer YES to
your question regarding Directories being renamed. Two different file managers
that I know of will do it and I'm sure there are others that I don't know about.
The First that I know of is a commercial package called QDOS which I don't have
and the second is a shareware program that I downloaded from "The Nashville
Exchange" here in town. I'm not sure about a 3rd package called WindowDos, which
a friend of mine in St. Louis uses, but I seem to recall it working as well. So
in answer to your question, yes, it can be done. Check your local BBS's
FileManagement areas for ElfTree or something similar. If I find the original
ZIP file that I downloaded I'll upload it here. Chat atcha later...Jax...

Chips & Tech Set In 3000NL
     From: TAHITI To: ALL

According to Tandy, my Technical Reference Manual and my eyes (from checking
inside my machine), this 3000NL has a Chips and Technologies Neat Chipset which
includes one 82C206, one 82C211, one 82C212 and one 82C215. The program Above
Disk+ identifies this chip set but will not work with it (the machine freezes).
The program Last Byte identifies this chip set but ends installation with the
message "Shadow ram is disabled/relocated - Change Setup." Since this chip set
does exist physically in my machine,
and presumably in each and every Tandy 3000NL produced, why will it not
function? If it was purposely disabled by Tandy in the development process,
WHY???? My machine has a total of 10 Megs of Ram: 640K Conventional, 384K
Expanded, 8M Extended and 1M on the VGA Video Board.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

You can increase your stack space with the DOS STACKS command. Look in your

There are small utilities in the Utilities Topic that will rename directories

The interrupts used to access the neat chip set are not "IBM standard". That is
why you are having problems. The neat chip set works just fine, "in the

shrug my shoulders and say -- "who knows!"

Dbase III has been declared public domain by a Federal judge. this was reported

I don't think it was dBase III that was declared public domain, but the dBase
III programming language. It is still probably illegal to share a copy if dBase
III (the programming environment, EXE file etc...) with anyone. As far as I
know, no one has tried to say dBase was PD, just the language, which all sort of
dBase clones use.

Read the article, I'll find the date and get back to you. the Basis of the
judges decision, according to the article, was that Ashton-tate used research
done by a university to create their product. A major law firm, as I understand
it, is sueing Ashton-tate for selling them a product for thousands of dollars
(several network nodes) that should have been obtained for less. I'll reread the
article myself also.

disapeared! Now I am progressively swapping SIMMs in and out trying to isolate
the bad SIMM module. I REALLY appreciate your reply to me cry for help... turns
out I think yo u had it right! And by the way, the NL comes with 2 x 256k SIMMs
standard (512k). I have the special "dedicated" Tamdy memory expansion board

Saw your message about the panasonic. I don't have the HX, but I do have the
original Tandy 1000 and the wide carriage version of the 1124, the 1624. It's a
great printer and far superior to the DMP130 I had, although the 130 served me
well and amazingly actually did a couple of things better than the 1624 did
straight out of the box. THe panasonic though is far superior overall and in
fact in almost everyway. You may need a new cable however. I'd recommend
though that you not buy it from Radio Shack as their prices for the cable are
outrageous compare to what some of the mail order houses charge. Also, be sure
to remove the device driver, LPDRVR.SYS, from your config.sys file if present.
It will reek havoc with the panasonic when you try to print from certain
programs. With some programs it has no effect. For instance, I had no problems
when using WordPerfect 4.2, but WordPerfect 5.0 got completely "confused" when I
tried to print with it. You should be quite happy with the 1124. My 1624
though is quite a bit louder than the old 130 was. --- Jay

Not to mention exporting technology. This may be more important than the duty
that may be required. I don't know about the rules between US and canada, but am
familiar with shiping to France. It's not as easy to ship a computer as it is to
ship a book. The other side of the coin is, who is going to know about this
transaction?

Thanks, Mike. I've already done that.

Just hoping to find an active user or two to show my friend he's not the only
one left using a Model 4. (I know he's not, but some of us "orphan" computer
users out here in South Dakota are indeed isolated.

I am having trouble getting Basic programs copied from PCM mag. to run on my
Tandy 1000I've installed a VGA card and monitor but programs that work on normal
tandy machine, no longer run on my setup Do I have to change Screen modes for
VGA ?
If so is there an easy way to do this, such as find and replace in word
processor or utility ? As you can tell, I'm not a wizard at this, but I like
to experiment.

All you lack is giving the ATH1 command before you give the ATO. I had the same
problem with a different modem a few weeks back.

Good luck.

Pete,
It's as simple as changing the SCREEN 5 command to I believe SCREEN 8 which
is for VGA. You might also want to remove any CLEAR ,,,32768 commands near the
beginnings of these programs because VGA cards have their own video memory and
any program written for Tandy Graphics uses this command to clear DOS memory for
use as Graphics memory for the special 16 color graphics modes used by the Tandy
1000 Family. If these two tips don't get you're programs running again, let me
know and maybe we can find the solutions together. Chat at ya later... Jax...

PS- I'm usually only online on weekends and late nights/early mornings so that's
the best time to catch me for a chat.

I AM NOT SURE OF YOUR QUESTION. I AM USING TELECOM UNDER DESKMATE 3.02(?). TO MY
HAYES I AM SENDING ATZ AFTER SELECTING 1200,8,N,1 ON THE TELECOM SET MENU. THE
2212 AND THE 6000 ARE SET TO 1200,8,N,1 BY EDITING TYE STTY FILE IN THE /ETC
DIRRECTORY. THE TTY TYPE FILE IS SET FOR A DMTERM. THE MODEM ON THE 6000 IS
CONNECTED TO THE TTY01 PORT (TOP). BOTH MODEMS ARE CONNECTED TO THE COM PORTS
WITH 25 WIRE CABLES. I AM USING THE TANDY 100EX AND HAYES TO SEND THIS. THE 6000
& 2212 ARE SENDING A TONE BUT I CANNOT CO NNECT. I CAN CONNECT IF I AM IN HOUSE
AND DIAL DIRRECT ( NO MANUAL CONNECTION BY THE SWITCHBOARD OPERATOR). WHEN THE
OPERATOR CONNECTS ME TO THE EXTENSION OF THE 6000 IT ANSWERS AND GENERATES THE
TONE BUT I CANNOT GET THE 1000EX AND HAYES TO TAKE IT FROM T HERE.

If you already have a printer cable you can go to Radio Shack and purchase a
snap on connector. I have a cable that on the computer end it has both a Tandy
Model 4 connector and an MS-DOS. I put them about six inches apart so they both
can't be plugged into a computer at the same time. The connector just snaps onto
the ribbon cable, you just have to be careful to line it up straight with the
cable before you snap it on. A lot cheaper than buying a new cable.

Normaly in a handshake agreement, the rules are more relaxed. Basicly, if a
canadian come to americia and purchases something, they can hand carry it back.
This may not be fully legal, but it is done every day. If it is shiped, the
carrier may require knowledge of the package contents. In shiping to a service
base in France, it is probable that the package gets check (opened) by some
authority. This is done for many reasons, one of which is saftey, and another is
security (national and industrial). Canada is more lax, and I think that I would
just send it, period. I would ask some one in the know first though, just to be
sure. The person that I wouldn't ask is the person responsible for getting it
there. (ie. the carrier) A wise friend once told me, never ask a question,
unless you are sure you know the answer. Especialy if the person that you ask is
in authority.

I know you use Procomm+ and thought you might know how I could get the tilde,
backslash, vertical bar, & accent keys to work on Procomm+ on my Tandy 1000SX.
These same keys worked alright with Procomm 2.4.2, but when I upgraded to
Procomm+ v2.0 these keys no longer worked in terminal mode. What's really odd is
that these keys work OK for other Procomm functions for which you can type in
info or commands (e.g. defining Meta keys).

    Thanks,
