Actually what is on ROM can be changed in memory *after* the ROM is read, Al.

This is a little advanced, but, almost anything can be manipulated.

DEBUG can usually dump the ROM contents to a file (D86 - disassembler) can do
the same, I believe. Take a look at A86/D86 in the programming Topic.

  Hi James!

  I have a multi-sync, but a plain old VGA . . .

. . . will work fine, too. Main thing to look for is
good quality monitor, regardless of whether you choose a multi-sync or not.

I'd recommend that you go to local stores and actually look at the screen and
see you're getting, rather than relying solely on techno-information such as
  dot pitch, etc.

I think my Sony (which does not have a non-glare screen) has brighter colors
and better resolution than many monitors with supposedly better specs. I think
those with nonglare screens look dingy, by comparison. Sony, though, lists
"line width" instead of "dot pitch," as most do, so you can find yourself
comparing apples and oranges, if not careful.

I highly recommend Sony Trinitron. They use a somewhat different technology
  and I like it!

Well, I tried the /b option and what came up looks a little scarey.. It
displays all the EEPROM reg's in binary. Without a Map of the EPROMS I think it
would be a big mistake to alter anything.. Also, since these are labeled as
registers I'm not sure if they would alter any files in ROM,, probably just the
H/W configuration. May just be a binary representation of what setuptl shows
you in english.

The 1400LT, when using an internal modem, has the mode set for COM2. This is
done to keep COM1 (the external serial port) free to add a mouse of whatever. If
you can configure your modem as COM2, then the serial port on the back will be
free (as COM1).

The COM channels are on the 1400LT bus, and depending on what address is chosen,
a perihperal will either grab channel 1 or 2.

I am still confused. We were using the 1400lt 's internal modem, sold by Tandy.
The Veralex communications program was set for 2400 bd, COMM2. The program told
us that there was an error. We also tried COMM1, with the same results. The
1400lt, therefor, must have been configured right. Veralex worked fine on the

though. Perhaps I just need to call Tandy suport to straighten this out. If you

Anyone have any ideas why there would be line noise on the same machine? An

my friend has gotten back to me with more detailed information. But first, in

Seems the program described in my last message is part of Norton Utilities
5.0 and is called "DISKTOOL". This is the procedure as I understand it from
talking with my friend. 1) Make a boot disk for drive a: with the FORMAT /S
option from DOS. 2) Use DISKTOOL to save the system info with the "Create
Rescue Disk" option. 3) Use DISKTOOL "Make a Bootable Disk" option and specify
the drive to fix, usually c: I was told that the program automatically fixes
the inoperable drive using the files and system info on the Rescue Disk" with no
other action by the user. He checked this by erasing one of the system files on
the hard drive and then booting from drive a: with the "Rescue Disk", running
DISKTOOL and letting it do its stuff. When DISKTOOL was was done the hard drive
booted properly again ( see pages 58 and 63 of Norton Utilities 5.0) Btw
DISKTOOL will also do a low level format if necessary without destroying any
data files. ( see page 61 of Norton Utilities 5.0).

The Tandy CM5 is an RGBI monitor which is a type of CGA monitor. Most CGA
monitor's are capable of 16 colors, it's the original CGA Video Board that can
only do 4 colors. Tandy's 16 color CGA is mostly comparable to CGA in many ways.
It map's it's video memory in basically the same way as CGA while VGA & EGA map
their Video Memory quite differently. I'm no expert by any means on EGA or VGA,
but from the little I've read, they're much more difficult to map out (Well they

Tandy computers support an enhanced graphics mode. This sometimes causes trouble
with non-Tandy graphics programs. The CM5 monitor is not the cause of the
limited colors. Is this a specific program that only gives you 4 colors -- or,
all programs?

     From: JAXOMSTEVE To: RICH19

Rich,
Yes, Tandy Graphics are special. But they didn't originate with Tandy. The
IBM PC JR was the first PC with 16 Color CGA, but IBM abandoned developement of
CGA for EGA. Tandy kept working on it and starting with the SL & TL had created
a 640x200x16 Color CGA mode. So far as I know, their research in this area may
still be going on, but I can't say for sure. I do know it's not a widely
supported mode by developers other than Game developers. The only thing similar
to EGA that Tandy graphics has is the ability to display 16 colors. Beyond that,
they handle the video memory completely differently. What is your particular
interest in Tandy Graphics? Are you wanting to program them with any particular
language? Chat at ya later...Jax...

Yes Rich, Tandy's graphics are better than the standard PC graphics. They have
an enhanced grpahics set. In order to get the 16 color graphics, you must be
running a program that takes advantage (is programmed for) this enhanced
graphics set.

I have a Tandy 1000 with 20 meg of HD and 3.2 DOS. I am trying to
upgrade to ver 3.3. My hard drive is a Western Digital and was installed using
their software, which provided a DOS partition (it installed the system files
without me touching the machine.). When I tried to copy the 3.3 system files to
the HD, using SYS C: command, i got a message "incorrect DOS version". This
machine won't even let me run this version from the floppy drives. It did let me
FDISK the C: drive, but even after that it still served up the same message.
What am i missing here?

     Help
     From: BERGENTHAL To: ALL

Can anyone help me with this problem? I have recently added a hard drive to my
Tandy 1000 (original version). Everything is working great, but.... Whenever I
exit a large program and DOS needs to reload Command.com, I get the message
"Invalid Command.com, Cannot load Command.com, system halted". The correct
version of Command.com is in the root directory of the hard drive, and comspec
is set to that path.

If I set comspec=a:\command.com and insert a DOS disk into the A: drive, when I
exit a large program I get a message telling me to insert my DOS disk and hit
any key... But by simply hitting the return key a few times, I can finally get
it to load properly!

This problem now seems to have disappeared (I hope...) since I switched the
drive to the last expansion slot (memory board is now in first slot).

Can anyone explain why this is happening (hardware problem, incompatibility,
Murphy's law...), or if I can do anything else about it?

Thanks.

Are you booting from the A: drive DOS diskette? If you boot from your hard drive
you load DOS 3.2 into memory -- when you then switch to the A: drive, it sees
the 3.2 version of COMMAND.COM you loaded and not the 3.3 version that you need.

Use a utility such as WHEREIS to see just *how many* versions of COMMAND.COM
exist on your hard drive. It is not unusual to find several copies -- this is so
because when you copy diskettes onto your hard drive (that run in a floppie
drive, for instance) they have COMMAND.COM on them.

If a friend gave you a new game that copied to your hard drive -- and -- had his
version 3.0 COMMAND.COM on it -- well..........

I believe that the DMP 130 has a non-standard centronics connector. Two the

printer connections:

          7 7 Data 5
          8 8 Data 6

      19-25 19-25 Gnd

Sherry,
Yes, you'll need to run SETUPHX.COM off your original HX's MS-DOS disk.
This program tells the HX how many drives you have. You may want to run it with
the SLASH A commandline option and use PAGE UP & PAGE DOWN to select any other
options to change. The Syntax is as follows:
At the A:> prompt type SETUPHX /a [ENTER]
Then just tell it how many floppies your system has. Hope this solves both

I suspect that it may not be able to find COMMAND.COM. Be sure that this file is

The HX has an enhanced video mode -- it may not be compatible with ANSI Draw.

In re-reading your message, it may not be a bad memory chip after all. Take a
look at your manual for NMI -- there should be switch to shut this off (usually
a jumper or a dip switch on the motherboard).

If it is a bad memory cell, and you have SIMMS, you will have to replace one of
the SIMMS (unless they are socketed chips - unusual). Incidenatally, I wasn't
aware that the NL could accept SIMMS (single inline memory modules)?

Compaticard is 80-$120 depending on which one you get. It supports all
density drives. The high end card can support 4 drives and have one of them be
your A: drive. Built in bios and firmware is said to be compatible with "all"
IBM types even one with built in floppy controllers like T1000's. Also computer
bios does not have to have support for second controller. I suspect that
several of the vendors that sell Tandy compatible products are using a version
of this card to sell Hi-Density drives to T1000 owners.

I used to see it offered by several vendors but only one or two lately and I
don't remember who.

     Norton 5.0 DISKTOOL
     From: KCS_MILW To: MISAL

Mike, Being a novice on PC's and especially on formatting hard drives, I can
only repeat what I have read about Norton 5.0 low-level formatting. Page 45 of
the Jan. 91 issue of PCM has a table that shows Norton 5.0 will low-level format
hard drives. I,ve also received a message from someone else stating that Norton
5.0 works like Spinrite. It was my assumption that the "DISKTOOL" option on page
61 of the Norton manual was what these people were talking about. If I'm wrong
please correct me.

I have a couple of additions to your informative column in the April, PCM.
"VUIMAGE" 2.96 supports Tandy 16 color CGA graphics besides all it's other
features. THe zoom option is terrific - works just like a CAD program. Seems
like infinite enlargements or reduction are available.

You do not state the version number for the "PICEM" listing in the column,
but the bytes size of the file is the same as the version I have and this is
2.0b. In addition to conversions of .PIC, .PCX and .GIF the program also does
.IMG and .BAS (basic binary format). Converting a .GIF original to .BAS and back
to .GIF works fine. Starting with a picture originating as .BAS and converting
to .GIF only produces a B & W .GIF file. As I have quite a few .BAS pictures I
would like to convert to color .GIF to use with the CSHOW slideshow program, I
have taken interest in this program and searched elsewhere for a newer version.
Version 2.10 is out but unfortunately does not convert .BAS color to .GIF
accurately. Is there any other program, shareware that converts .BAS to .GIF in
color?

In the April column (as with all columns) I could only put as much information
as magazine space allowed. It is difficult to determine just what will and will
not interest the reader, and then pack it into the article. You pointed out some
areas that would surely have been of interest. Hopefully, many will read about
it in your message.

The version of PICEM is 2.0B. And, unfortunately, I cannot find a program that
will sucessfuly convert your BAS files to GIF format (in color). There are 3
more places that I can look -- and, will.

recently with both x-mem and vga.. I've got a TL/2 and am considering the same
type of upgrades in the near future.. Any recommendations?.......Any problems
you've encountered....

I'd appreciate any info,

I have a Tandy 1000 TL, (not 2 or 3), a 65 meg hardcard, 768k, CM11 monitor and
a few other accessories. I have 2 questions that I hope someone can answer. 1st,
what is the advantage of the extra memory over 640k. 2nd, is there anywa... to
increase the clock speed on my system. While 8mhz is ok for most applications, I
have seen faster systems and would like to use the extra speed at certain times.

RE: Tandy 1000 TL (Re: Msg 18644)

The advantage of expanding to 768K is that video memory does not use your base
memory -- giving you more memory to run large programs. The disadvantage is that
this 768K memory upgrade is causing problems running certain programs -- an
example is Word Perfect.

You can buy "speed-up" cards for your TL -- they are a little expensive, but
Reggie (RLYOUNG) raves about his -- maybe he can give you more info on this.

Jax think you for your anus. to my massage. I have the original 2500XL. I
didn't know about a new XL tell you said something about it. I don't have the CD
in it. I got a 1000RL for Xmess and didn't like it because it didn't have VGA
and was not up to
date with the new games and programs that is out. So I tuck it back to RS and
they talked me in to getting the 2500XL. now I see that they are out with the
RLX that looks to me like the 2500 the way they wright about it.
My wife was not to happy when I got the 2500 because she alot of thing on the
RL. And the 2500 didn't have the programs that the RL had. But after playing
with the backup from the RL. I got them all to work in the 2500. I was not told
that the DESKMAT E in the 2500 was not the same as the RL. Then when I talked to
the people at RS they said that the programs for the RL wouldn't work in the
2500. I'm new at computing so I played around so and got them to work. Because I
didn't know better.
Right now I'm using it to learn about computing. I have been on DELPHI for a

my time is out.

I have a Generic SVGA card with Trident Chips on it and a Packard Bell

graphics programs which I've attributed to the Generic SVGA card. I'd definately
reccomend getting one that is guaranteed to work in a Tandy 1000. I'll be
upgrading to a more Tandy 1000 specific VGA card later maybe if I can afford it.
As for EMS Memory, I'm still figgerin' out what to do with it so you're on your
own there. All I can say in that regard is that the Micro Mainframe EMS board is
the only one I know of that will run in a Tandy 1000 so that's the only one I
can reccomend. What're you planning on using the VGA and X-tra memory for? Chat

The CPU is a 16 bit processor, but the TL only has an 8 bit bus. A real AT has a
16 bit CPU and 16 bit bus.

Although the TL has only an 8 bit bus, the 16 bit CPU makes a big difference in
the speed of the machine.

Invisible Software make a Hardware Compatible 4.0 EMS board that I've heard

I'll try to dig it up and post it soon.

Getting a VGA monitor/card will be good too. It will free up some base memory
if you don't have the extra 128K upgrade. It will also clear up some problems
that you might have with your EMS if you try to load TSR's and device drives
into EMS using programs such as QRAM or HeadRoom. Most of these programs
require a hardware 4.0 EMS board. Read Sept 90 PCM for more info on VGA Install

Jax,

I am considering the x-mem upgrade for swapping 4dos in and out of, also have
a couple application programs that make use of it for swapping.. I think
Telemate takes advantage of it also.. Just an attempt to speed things up a
little bit.. As far a the VGA, that would be mainly for fun and games but there
are also some good software out there for other applications which requires at
least a EGA.. I'm using a CM-11 right now, which basically meets my needs but
there's room for improvement.. "extra's" already built in.. The only problem is
this system is only about 6 months old and I hate to invest in a new one til
I've put a little wear and tare on this one..
You said you had a generic card with trident chips.. I take it these are bought
separately? I thought you just bought a card, popped it in and add the new
monitor.. I've also heard mention of a Paradise VGA card.. know anything of
these? .. I was told they're about the only thing compatible with the tl/2
outside of Tandy's own.

Thanks for the info. Don't have September issue of PCM (infact I don't have any
PCM issues); guess I'll see if I can get a back issue.

I've tried just about every combination of jumper settings I can think of on
both the motherboard and the VGA card. I'll try it again though.

Thanks again, Larry

internal modem plugged into another one, but I still have 3 slots and lots of
room left. THe question is not with room, but whether or not MS-DOS 3.2 will
let me do it. Any advice or help appreciated.

Get hold of Hard Drives International (800-767-DISC). I believe that they have a

Staten,
I'm not familiar specifically with the TX myself, but I am pretty sure
that Tandy won't support a second HardCard in your machine. The 67 Watt power
supply is supposedly too weak for two controllers. On the other hand, I have 1
64Meg HardCard with a 48Meg Hard Drive cabled to the same hardcard in my TL and
this combo seems to work just fine. There may be other reasons for not having
more than one controller in a Tandy 1000, check out your current controller card
and see if it has the pin's for plugging a second drive into. It could be even
cheaper buying just the new drive without a second controller. Hope this
helps...Jax...

If anyone knows how to do a low-level format on a hard drive, I can use the

intermittant "general read failures" on my E: partition. Since I will be moving
here shortly I thought I'd reformat the hard disk prior to setting the system
back up... I've been told you can use Debug on an XT to do a low level format
and that there's utilities to do one on an AT compatible but since this tl/2 is
kind of in between I don't know which way to go.. Also, I read up on Debug
utility and didn't see anything on commanding the controller to do a low-level
format.. Has anyone done or know how to do this?

     From: LJGRS To: BRUTIS

I used DEBUG to low-level format my drive but it's not a "smart drive". If you
feel like experimenting:
    - get into debug
    - at the debug prompt(-) type: g=c800:5
(this address may be different for a smart drive) then follow the prompts.
It should prompt you for an interleave value, if so, try using the default (just
press enter). It should then ask you if you are dynamically configuring the
drive. To dynamically configure a drive you will need to know:
    - number of cylinders
    - number of heads - starting reduced write current cylinder
    - write precomp cylinder
    - error burst length
    - step rate Usually this information is provided with the drive. Good luck,
Larry

It may be that you are using ON TRACK's Disk Manager for the Seagate Drive
format and set up? You may have to call the Debug routine from your controller
and NOT USE the Disk Manager software. It might be conflicting with the Tandy
interrupts (in this case, your keyboard).

What brand and typ of controller did you get with the drive?

As long as I have your attention I have another question on a different

issue of PCM magazine states in the second paragraph on page 9, "The video card
lets me simulate Tandy graphics mode so that I can load drivers for the Tandy
1000 series and see how they look". Everything else I've read on VGA cards have
said there was NO support for Tandy graphics mode on any current card. Could you
find out what brand super VGA card he is using and if the driver mentioned is
available from the Delphi database? From messages I've read on this board I
think there are others that would also be interested in the answer to this
question. If any others know the answers please join in the discussion.

Tandy dos not recomend low level formating a smart drive. I know of two drive
failures that the tandy service center said, "You should not have attempted a
low level format". They did not out right say this caused the failure though.
Ask MISAL, there was discusion a few months ago on this, and I remember him

nortons has a low level format.

George,
Well the obvious question to answer in regards to PC USA is this: Is the
Overlay file in the right directory or on the same disk? PC USA is looking for
one of it's primary files and it has to know where to look for that file. Have
you checked the disk to see that the file that it's looking for is there? If it
isn't there then you'll need to find the disk it's on and copy it to the disk
that you're starting the program from or put the disk with the neccesary file in
another drive and set your PATH= statement in your autoexec.bat file to search
that drive. Hope this helps. Tell us more about your setup and we can help
better. Are you running PC USA off of a Floppy or HardDrive? Chat at ya

Bill,
Pardon me for jumping in here, but On Track's Disk Manager program has too
many conflicts when running on a Tandy 1000. Your best bet is to Low-Level
format your drive using DOS's DEBUG.COM/EXE program and then partitioning the
drive using FDISK. After FDISK is used then you can use the regular DOS FORMAT
program and FORMAT each partition. This should kill your keyboard conflicts.
The DEBUG routine for calling the Controller cards low level formating software
is as follows:
Type DEBUG [Enter] at the DOS prompt
Type g=c800:5 at the - prompt given by DEBUG. Then just follow the
Directions for the low level format.
Hope this helps...Jax...

If your drive is IDE, you need special software to low-level the drive. Many
distributors have started to give this with the drive purchase -- but only
lately. You may not have gotten it with your drive.

Contact the distributor you purchased the drive from and ask.
