How do you get a third party Hercules monochrome "clone" board to properly work

Microsoft Logo crumbles instead of merging and the mouse leaves pixels in it's
wake. The hi rez text appears double exposed, almost impossible to read.

If I do a warm boot after the hi rez carbage crash described above, everything
comes up correctly. Looks wonderful....Why is it necessary for me to do a warm
boot to get the 1000SX to address the hercules card correctly??????

PLEASE PLEASE....Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I called TANDY

Deskmate sees the enhanced video card and expects the VGA driver to be present.
There are any similarities between EGA and VGA. One thing is for sure -- you

Mike,

Run "DMVID EGA" to correct the problem. It could be that you or someone ran
"DMVID VGA" to force DeskMate to use the VGA driver. It is also possible that
something on the card itself is faking DeskMate into believing that it is a VGA
card.

John, Don't feel stupid. At one time everyone was a neophyte here. If you
haven't founf the utility database yet, this will be a quick way to get there.
From the Tandy sig prompt, you can type exit, which will take you to the GROUPS>
prompt. There enter PC, which will take you to the PC Compatibles sig. There
type d at the main prompt, which will get you into the database section. At that
point just enter a ?, which will show you a listing of the available databases.
Enter one of the databases by typing in at least the first 2 or 3 letters of the
one you want. If you want to find a particular set of files, for instance
printer related type in sea printer (translates to search for keyword 'printer')
Hope this helps.

1: PFS First choice: Runs very well. The graphics are fantastic and the text
crisp.

2: The NEW Print SHOP: It has the resolution of VGA, but in MONO. The
pictures and other graphics are superb.

3: PFS First Publisher: You can see half a page on the screen at once. The
menus are easy to read and you can see all the tools on the side.

5: WordPerfect 5.0: All aspects are supported. The page preview is crisp and
clear and easy on the eyes.

6: Lotus 1-2-3: I tested version 2.01 and found the graphs and spreadsheet
great.

7: Deskmate: I kinda figured it would work.

8: DBASE III+: Works well.

I will put more through their pases and let you know my findings.

I was please that the SL/TL supports the MGA/HERC graphics.

ONE very big norte: IN this mode the SL/TL need the entire 64K of video RAM to
run. IF you have a ram protect program like ADJRAM. Don't use it in MONOCHROME

I've tried a few different ways to get Deskmate to run under Dos 4.01, and so
far I've had no luck. When I try to start up with the files that I already have
on my hard drive (which worked fine under dos 3.3) it just gives the indication
that it is trying to start, but then dies right away and returns to the C>
prompt. I ran the setuptl2 again and enabled the boot from the rom to try to
reinstall deskmate on the hard drive, but the system doesn't recognize that
there is even a hard drive connected. Actually it's no big loss, all I wanted to
do was use PC Link so I could leave a couple of messages on the Tandy hot line.
I'm able to accomplish that by disconnecting the 40 meg that I have dos 4.01
installed on and connect up the 20 meg that still has dos 3.3 on it and away I
go.

that I could build a clone XT for what either would cost.. ( I did have some of
the pieces lying around already.) My solution to this quandry is to think VERY
SERIOUSLY before spending a lot on upgrading an HX this way... You spend a lot
of money... and when you're done you still have a pretty limited machine. I'm
really not "TANDY BASHING" here, but just trying to give some perspective. The
HX really is a nice beginners machine, but after a while you keep running into
its limitations.Better I think to keep it as a second machine, sell it, give it
to your nephew or whatever and buy/build something with a power supply of more
than 27 watts, real slots, and a video system that isn't the clone of a PC jr.

A few observations that I have found.

I am not sure if you are trying to use PC DOS or MS DOS but this is what I have
found.

When using a DOS other than Tandy's DOS (PC DOS especialy) you loose a few
things on machines that feature the boot from ROM.

The DOS does not recognize the ROM drive (Therefore you can't run the Deskmate
main program from the ROM drive) I have found this to be true with PC DOS and a
number of other DOS's.

When you load your DOS 4.01, see if it will recognize your ROM drive by doing a
D: <ENTER> or what ever your ROM drive should be with your set up.

these were MY findings and just a thought.

After downloading that, at the ACTION prompt type EXIT and press RETURN and
type READ THE OTHER FILE YOU MENTIONED.

These are available from 3rd party venders.

Tandy offers a 128K ram upgrade but it is only usable for video memory (mine
freed up about 12 K of usable ram. They also offer the Micro Mainframe LIM 3.2
EMS board in the catalog which will add up to 2 meg of Expanded memory. If you
opt for that one DON'T order it from RS, try one of the mail order houses like
MaryMac...the prices are much, much lower. For true LIM 4.0 hardware for Tandy
machines look at Invisible Software's Expanded Memory Board. You can call them
at (415)570-5967 and they'll send you a brochure. I talked to several people on
CI$ who had installed them in Tandy 1000s and they loved them.

I would like to know how to get a batch file to accept user input.
I like to check my system disk for my 1400LT for viruses from time
to time. I use SYSCHK. But it takes a little time to run, and when
I'm busy, and ther's no need, I'd like to not run SYSCHK. I would
like my autoexec.bat file to ask me if I want to run SYSCHK. This is
not a big problem, I've solved it suitably already, but couldn't do
it the way I planned (I use two batch files). I hate not being

I'm using the MS-DOS 4.01, and your statement is very accurate as to what is

You can add a board purchased from Discount Computer Services in Athens, Ohio
(one among many vendors). A board loaded with 2 meg will run you just under
$400, with 0K , the board is $159. Depending on how cheaply you can get the ram

believe the board comes with software that will give you LIM 3 support, and
there was a coupon to get software for LIM 4.

Bad news guy! You can't use that 128K on your TL for anything other than
Video Memory for Tandy Graphics Modes. Since you have a VGA Card, you can't even
use it for Video Memory. It's useless. As for Dos 4, use SETUPTL.COM to set your

     T3000NL + a coprocessor
     From: TATHOM To: ALL

I have recently installed a math coprocessor in a Tandy 3000nl, and I am
having problems. The Tandy 3000nl has a Paradise VGA card with a Tandy monitor,
the coprocessor, the 3000 will no longer boot from the hard drive. Actually, it
will not even go through the boot cycle with the memory check. Removing the
coprocessor, sets everything to normal. The contoller and hard drive were
bought from Hard Drive International. Their customer support thinks that I may
have an interrupt problem, but they do not have any motherboard information from
Tandy to help me out. I have installed the coprocessor in other machines (this
t1000TL for example), with no problems. I have also tried the different jumper
setting (i.e. 10mHz and 8mHz options) with no luck. I do not have the
oscillator chip that would run the coprocessor socket at 10 mHz. One additional
bit of information, the 3000 locks up when the light to the hard drive comes on,
hitting the reset button at this time will permit the 3000 to boot.

Interesting problem, isn't it? I would appreciate any suggestions. I left
a message to Tandy's customer service on Compuserve, but I have received no
reply. Maybe you folks can help.

It should work with a 1.2 mb or even a 1.44mb disk if you supply an additional

Since the editor here wraps text so bad, I don't know if the following Debug
script file will be suitable for "reassembling." It is, though worth a shot.

The following program is called QUERY.COM. If you get a good copy of it, you
can use it in batch files to ask questions and branch based on the DOS
errorlevel. Below is the syntax:

QUERY Run SYSCHK? (y/n): @YN IF ERRORLEVEL 2 GOTO NoThanks SYSCHK :NoThanks REM
didn't run it if skipped here

Notes: Your response keys must be single keys (like the YN) and the prompt (in
this case, "Run SYSCHK") must be followed by the "at" [@] symbol. Errorlevel
goes from 1 to [whatever] in THE ORDER OF THE OPTION.

Hope this helps (heck, hope this WORKS):

     Express 286 card

Does anyone know where a BROKE college student can get one of those 286 Express
boards for a Tandy 1000 SL/1? I have become a real power user and need the
extra speed. I know that the Express board that I am speaking of is not made
anymore. There's a "Tiny Turbo" board available (not just for Tandys, but for
any clone) that runs $350!!! Wowie! The last time I saw an add for this
Express board, it was selling for $199. I would be willing to buy a used one
(in fact, I would be ELATED if it was less expensive) if anyone out there has
such an animal.

Also, if I can't find it, what are the REAL benefits to getting a math
coprocessor? I know it will only work with software that uses a coprocessor,
but am wondering what the speed differences will be in THIS case (like I'm
running WordPerfect that's slooooooow on printing graphics...and First Publisher
is equally slow in this respect. I know that both of them will "take advantage"
of a coprocessor and since they cost considerably less, it might be an
alternative.

My bus speed is already at 8 mHz. Actually, I have tried all combinations (10-
10, 10-8, 8-8) with no luck. I think the most important thing, here, is that
installing the coprocessor causes to lock when the hard drive is first accessed.
Hitting the reset button, will permit the 3000 to boot. When the coprocessor is
removed, the system boots fine. It is obvious that I can hit the reset button
every time I turn on the machine, but that's like jump starting a car every time

The ROM in the tandy machine is treated like a drive. It holds some files, so
some for booting the machine, and others to run deskmate. These file cannot be
coppied from the ROM to a hard drive. If you want to use Deskmate, you will need
a copy of these files. To get these files and install them to the hard drive,
you will need the "shelf" version of the program. This is the one Tandy sells to
customers with non tandy machines. In my opinion, Tandy should suply these files
to all users, so that they can do what you have described. Regardless oof what
some people say, Deskmate does have some quality features that are worth looking
at, although I never use deskmate myself. I would do the following, if I wanted
to use deskmate. I am not telling you to do this, but just saying that I would
do it. First I would goto Radio Shack, the one That I purchased my computer
from, and ask for a copy of the "shelf version of deskmate, explaining why I
needed it. If they did not give, and I mean free o of additional charge, me the
program, I would next go to the district manager with the same story. The store
manager should be able to give his name and phone number. If I still did not
have the proper program in my hand, I would go to the regional manager. If one
calls these people, there usualy is a toll involved, If one writes, it cost 25
cents and they usualy call back, they have the toll. If I can help, just say so.
Good luck.

Thanks for that reply. I had assumed that the disks I got when I purchased the
machine were the off the shelf version. If I understand you correctly, that's
probably not so. I'll try the things you suggested and see if I get any results
that way. About the only thing that interests me fro the deskmate package now is
PC Link, and that only to try to resolve some other problems that I'm having
with products purchased from Tandy that are supposed to be compatible with one
another. Visits to the local stores and calls to user support have been entirely
useless. Even though it sounds like I'm Tandy bashing, that's not entirely the
case. Tandy does have good products, but it's often extremely hard to get any
kind of support. I guess the years I ran with all versions of the color computer
should have prepared me for this....:-)

If all you're using deskmate for is PC-Link, next time you're on PC-Link drop
into the Customer Service menu and look up the software update section. It most
probably is the same PC link software you're running, but it only costs $3.00 to
order it from them and it includes a deskmate runtime with all the necessary
video drivers for EGA and VGA cards. It's a quick out for your problem!

The extra 128K on the 1400 LT can only be used as a ramdisk with the

Extended memory is only for AT machines (286, 386 and 486). You can, however,
buy Expanded memory boards. The Micro mainframe is the one Tandy sells.

The 128k that resides above the base 640K is best used as a RAMDISK. There are
some programs that will take advantage of this 128K, but none that are really
worthwhile. Take a look on the DOS disk that came with the machine. You will
find the RAMDISK there. This can be handy to load small, often used programs at
boot. This gives you a virtual memory drive (E: with most systems).

Thanks again. Hmmmm. That saves me $129. I don't think I need a printer
buffer (don't think it would do any good). No. The bottleneck seems to
be in processing the graphic/prn/math stuff. Once the data actually HITS
the printer, things go okay! It takes Word Perfect about 10 minutes to
print one page that's 50% graphics! And the SL is an 8086 (which is

You shouldn't have any compatibility problems with a modem that's running in

Well, this is strange....you're answering my questions as fast as I send

Well, RATS! So I'd be better off (IMHO) getting a 286 card. I program,

my software at PC speed (4.77/8MHz), or leave it in for an *idea* of 286
speed. So, find me a 286 card, for $50, would you? ;^)

QuickBasic is a compiler, and a whole lot more!

GWBASIC is an interpreter - when executing a program, the computer figures out
what each line has to do every time it executes it. The end result is a slow
program.

A compiler takes a program and converts it into machine language - the computers
native toungue - all at once. The result is a MUCH faster program.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! QB also offers much more over GWBASIC - an absolutely
beautiful programming environment, structured programming constructs like
procedures and functions, you don't have to use line numbers, a help system that
effectively gives you the entire QB manual, on line, at the touch of a button,
and much much more.

When you're first learning BASIC you don't need QB, but buy it as soon as you
can. Believe me, once you use it you will NEVER want to go back to plain old
GWBASIC.

Ann,
QuickBasic is a Basic Environment/Enterpreter/Compiler while GW-Basic is
just an Environment/Enterpreter. What this means is that with GW-Basic you can
program in Basic, but all your programs are quite slow in operating because each
instruction has to be interpreted for the computer at each execution of it.
QuickBasic, on the other hand, is an interpreter/compiler which means that it
takes your Basic source code and compiles it into stand-alone programs that run
without the interpreter and are much faster. QuickBasic creates EXE files that
can be run from DOS level and GW-Basic creates BAS files that can only be run
from within GW-Basic. The gist of this is YES, you do want either QuickBasic,
PowerBasic or TurboBasic (All of which are compilers) if you want to do anything
with Basic. Of course, this is my opinion, others will vary.

     Printer problems
     From: JAYSTEIN To: ALL

Have an "original" Tandy 1000 (ca. 1985). Recently purchased a Panasonic
KXP-1624 printer. Have problems with printout when running WordPerfect 5.0.
(No problems with WordPerfect 4.2 or other programs.) First page will print
fine and usually the second page too. Sometimes even the 3rd and 4th page of a
document will print up just fine. But then after the end of one page, instead
of the paper being advance just to the top of the next page, the printer will
advance the paper several inches (from 3 inches to as much as 10 inches) before
printing the next page. This will happen sometimes only for one page, but at
other times for several pages before the printer goes back to printing as it
should. It doesn't keep printing fine. Usually as it goes along the problems
multiply. The printer will begin turning off and on (a few seconds to a few
minutes) and goes "haywire." I've had it print a footnote that belong at the
end of page 10 in the middle of page 4. It will print page 8 and then turn off
and when it comes back on it may print one paragraph from page 8 and then turn
off and then come back on and print all of page 15.

I spent 4 weeks working with the folks at WordPerfect trying to find the cause.
They did extensive testing. After several things didn't work they sent me a
whole new set of disks. After that didn't solve the problem they had me mail
them my printer driver file and several of the files I had trouble printing
(they had me "print the files to disk." They went over the files running all
sorts of tests and found no problems. They successfully printed up the files I
had using their 1624 printer hooked up to an IBM XT clone. It was their
conclusion that the problem must be in the printer since it was new. (I have no
problems using 5.0 with my old printer, a Tandy DMP 130 or with the earlier
version of WordPerfect. (Both printers work fine with the latter. However
WordPerfect told me that was not necessarily significant as 5.0 works with the
printer much differently than 4.2. Strangely enough though, files written in
5.0, but saved in 4.2 format and printed using 4.2 mess up also.) If this was
any other software firm I'd have serious doubts, but these folks at WordPerfect
have a great reputation and they did spend a considerable amount of time on the
problem.

So I had the Panasonic people check out the printer. They could not find any
cause due to the printer. They hooked it up to a clone and ran 5.0 without a
hitch. They then had me bring in my computer and they hooked up another printer
to it and we got the same problem as with my printer. Panasonic's opinion was
that it must have something to do with how the Tandy 1000 was interfacing with
the printer and the program.

Tandy's official comment was something like "there is no reason the Tandy 1000
would have any trouble connecting to any printer, nor have we heard of any
similar problem. There is nothing we can think of in the 1000 that could be the
cause of the problem. We do not support WordPerfect 5.0, but feel the problem
has to be with the printer driver and not our machine. The printer port is
completely compatible with the IBM Standard." That's paraphrased, but
essentially the message I got. I told them that WordPerfect had reported no
problems with the model or it's narrow carriage twin, the 1124. WordPerfect
spent 4 weeks on the problem, Panasonic several days, and Tandy about 15 minutes
including hold time.

The cable is the correct Tandy cable for connecting to the printer (or so they
tell me), it is shorter than the maximum allowable length according to the
printer manual. I've tried tape on the 14 pin at the computer end, the printer
end, and at both end. We've tried printing with the printer setting for LF set
to both ON and OFF. Various changes were made to the WordPerfect printer driver
(using backup files), trying different combinations of settings for LF, page
advance, vertical and horizontal motion, etc. Other printer drivers were tried
using those recommended by Panasonic including the Epson 2500 and the Epson
1500. Switching to the IBM mode (XL24) resulted in even worst results.

My RAM checks out find too. I have no trouble running other programs. (The
computer has an internal modem (Tandy), and a 64 meg hard disk (divided into two
drives), 640K, and I'm running DOS 3.2. Running various diagnostic programs I
can find no errors. I even tried using a program called DIAGS to check on the
port and "handshaking." I'm no expert and the latter program was a bit over my
head, but I could not detect anything that appeared wrong. I've even clean all
of the connections.

Sorry for the long message, but thought I'd save some time by telling what has
already been tried. This is getting tiresome though and I would GREATLY
appreciate any help and suggestions for solving the problems.

Briefly, QuickBasic is a Basic editor, debugger and compiler that can produce
EXE and COM files after compiled. It is much more flexible than BASIC (or
GWBASIC). Many QuickBasic libraries exist, making it extremely easy to program a
major application by INLCUDING these libraries and then CALLing them.

If you are serious about learning BASIC -- you will eventually buy QuickBasic.
So, you might as well start right now, learning to use it.

I know you have tested your RAM, but it sure sounds like a bad cell in a RAM
chip. To test for this, you would have to write to every "latch" in every chip
-- not just a normal parity check. This could be in your I/O area and would not
affect the normal function of your software - only the output, in this case.

If you can, swap memory chips (all if possible or as many as you can get hold
of), to see if this make a difference.

If this fails, you might have R.S. look at the LPT port components.

Just one more voice to add to what everyone else is saying. I started with QB 3
several years ago and have progressed through to the current QB 4.5. Prior to
that may Basic interpeter (What GW Basic) goes all the way back to the old Level
II Basic that came with the old TSR-80 Model III. When I switched to QB I knew
it was easier to use (not to mention more powerful) but I kinda thought that was
because of the Basic interpreter experience. Well about six months ago I had
occasion to write a simple calculation problem in GW. It was HARD. I had a
H--- of a time. Tried it in QB 4.5 and knocked it off in about 10 minutes. I'd
be lost now without QB. Nuff said.

Mike, I've got a couple of extra banks of RAM chips so I'll give your suggestion
a try. I sure appreciate your quick response. This evening though I took a long
hard look to see if there was anything I hadn't tested and I realized I had not
checked out the new cable I bought. I got out an OHM meter, my tech manual for
the 1000 and the printer's manual and after a rather tedious job to see if
everything matched up as it should I discovered what appears to be some
inconsistences. It was too late to call Radio Shack's service number so I can't
be sure if this is intentional for some peculiar reason. Panasonic and Tandy's
nomenclature are slightly different, but it appears that the AUTO FEED XT pin (
14) on the printer is connected to a ground on the computer end (pin 27), while
the PPAUTOFEED* on the computer end (pin 32) is connected to a "blank" pin (#34)
at the printer. Sometimes what seems to be logical isn't, but all the same that
did not seem as it should be. Although I did consider the possibility that it
was done to eliminate the extra line feed that Tandy 1000s are so noted for. In
any case, I'll try to get an answer out of Radio Shack in the morning. Again,
thanks for the other suggestion. It's a bit late tonight, but I will give it a
try tomorrow evening. (I really like the printer and if I have to recheck
everything ten times I don't think I really will mind much, so long as I get the
problem corrected!) --- JAY

Actually I was refering to the very small file that can be structured using
PDQ's library. The process of compiling a COM file under Qb is a misnomer. It is
really a trick -- make a small exe file and rename it to a com file. You
"caught" me -- as I do sometimes rename these "very" small compiled files with a

Although pin #14 may connected to ground, this would not cause the problem you
are experiencing (and to my knowledge, the Tandy cable has not been grounded at
pin 14, intentionally). However, there could be a broken wire in the cable the
"would" cause the problem. Vibration could be a culprit, here.

The RAM (or LPT components) would still be my "not on sight" guess.

Do let me know how this turns out!

The TL/2 will work with Zmodem but, Deskmate doesn't support it. All Deskamte

I tried your suggestion, but still keep getting the same error message. I don't
know what the problem is, but I think I have found a way around it. Since my
program displays the graphics in a window in the upper left corner of the screen
(similar to Bard's Tale), I don't need to load a whole screen each time I
display a graphic image. What I have done is created several different graphic
screens which each contain 12 to 15 graphic images for use by the program.
Using page switching, I can bload 3 pages of graphics images, (while displaying
the fourth page, this avoids the annoying alternate line image shown as a screen
is bloading). I can then make any of the other 3 pages the active page and GET
my graphics from them while still displaying the fourth page. I can then make
the fourth (display) page the active screen again, and instantaneously place the
image in the window on the screen. Since I can only store 3 pages of graphic
images at a time, I will still have to bload them in occasionaly but it will not
be seen and will take much less time than bloading each seperate image. I
realize that I will have to CLEAR about 128K of memory for the 4 pages, if I'm
reading the book right, this won't interfere with the amount of memory I have to
store my basic program, but since I am compiling the basic code will it matter
anyway. One more thing, what happens if my basic programs exceeds the 64K set
aside for it? What then?

Thanks, Mark Hatfield

Mark,
I'm not an expert on how Basic handle's memory by any stretch of the
imagination, so I couldn't tell you how to get around Basic's 64K barrier. If
you can get around your problem with page switching, that seems to be a good
idea. Remember this though, you'll also run into disk storage space problems
when saving whole screen's to disk. In the SCREEN 5 Mode, each page takes up 32,
768Bytes. This eats up disk space quickly and you'll need to make the most of
this by storing 4 different images per page. (If you're using 1/4 of the screen
per image that is.) What exactly, are you doing with this game? Have you got any
demo versions that you could upload here for others to check out? The demo of my

What are you wanting to do in Graphics Mode? Are you sure your Monitor

Mono. CGA stands for "Color Graphics Adaptor". If your Monitor is Monochrome it
may not have graphics capabilities. Has your Version of Deskmate Draw been known

a drive not rea dy error. The drive motor never spins up. I also reversed five

RE: Printer problems (Re: Msg 17269)
     From: JAYSTEIN To: MISAL

Mike, I swapped out the chips and the memory chips appear to be okay. The fact
that my old DMP 130 prints fine leads me to believe the printer port is okay.
Of course that may be my ignorance speaking. However, it also required a
different cable which leads me back to the "funny" cable wiring I mentioned
previously. According to Radio Shack's Ft. Worth people, I have the right cable
and it is was wired CORRECTLY. The latter is apparently true as I swapped the
cable for another and had the same results.

The following pairs of numbers are how the pins match up based on readings from
an OHM meter, with the Computer given first and the printer's end given second:

1/1 2/19 3/2 4/20 5/3 6/21 7/4 8/22 9/5 10/23 11/6 12/24 13/7 14/25
15/8 16/26 17/9 18/27 19/10 20/28 21/11 22/29 23/12 24/30 25/13 26/*
27/* 28/32 29/* 30/31 31/16 32/34 33/17 34/* */14 */15 */18 */33 */35 */36

A "*" meant I got no matching pin at the printer's end of the cable, or visa
versa. I don't believe that is an indication of short as pins 26, 29, and 34 on
the computer's end are listed as NC in the manual (???"NO CHARGE"). Also, the
printer has a standard 36 pin connector, resulting in two extra pins, 35 & 36.
That leaves one missing blank pin at the printer's edge. HOWEVER, pin 14 at the
computer end is also listed as NC, BUT it connects with pin 25 at the printer
end (I think I mistakenly typed pin 27 the other night. According to the
printer manual Pin 25 is a return pin for DATA 6. Also, the AUTO FEED XT at the
printer end (pin 14) has no connection at the computer end of the cable (it's
the missing 6th blank pin at the printer's end.) And, pin 34 at the printer end,
a "blank", connects to pin 32, PPAUTOFEED, at the computer end.

According to the printer manual when the signal to the AUTO FEED XT is low a
CR+LF action occurs, but when the signal is high, ONLY a CR action takes place.
I don't know if this really sounds like it could be the cause of my problem, but
it does seem like the printer would be getting some confusing messages from the
computer with the cable wired as it is. Again, the spokesman at Tandy in Fort
Worth told me that this was the proper wiring for the cable and that I had the
proper cable too, but it sure seems odd.????

Would you know if that is that matching up the way it should???? Again, sorry
for the longggg message! ----JAY

Mike, before I changed out my memory chips I had run several memory test
programs including MEMTEST and BURNIN (the latter of which does appear to do
quite a thorough test), but tonight after I wrote the previous message I ran
another program, RAMTEST. About a year ago I had heard this program was not
compatible with the Tandy 1000. I went ahead and ran the program tonight and I
got the following message:

Base memory read error at address 9C8C0
This address is in the 10th 64K bank of base RAM
                                 (3rd 256k bank)

          Bit number: 76543210
          Data is: 01010010
          Data should be: 10111010
          Error(s): ^^^ ^

The base 128K of the computer is in 64K ram chips. I also have the Tandy plus
memory board which adds an additional 512K using 256K chips. The tech manual
covers only an earlier expansion board that Tandy sold (it added 256K only) and
not the so-called plus board which added the full 512K of RAM. I found nothing
in the manual which resembled the above given address, but not being formally
trained in electronics I may just not know what I'm seeing. In any case, could
you give me a clue as to where the above supposedly bad chip may be located???
I suppose it is possible I placed a bad chip in the same slot in which there had
been a bad chip. It seems unlikely, but it is possible. I'd hate switch out
all the chips again as removing the drive cages to reach the chips on the
motherboard is a lot of hassall - terrible design to have those chips located
under the drive cage! Of course, as I mentioned, I had heard that the program
did not work with the 1000 so the above may mean nothing. Thanks for any help
--- Jay.

It sounds as if you have an SCSI drive in your SL. The ST-02 adapter has a ROM
onboard and maybe conflicting with the SL memory area.

The Seagate's SCSI drives come with ON TRACK disk manager software and require a
special format. During this format you may choose the hard drive to be either C:
or D:.

My Seate SCSI came with tracks 0-16 formatted and contained the software to
configure (low-level) the drive. The program needed is INSTALLR.EXE which should
be on the hard drive. You should also get a message when the computer boots from
the SCSI ROM, telling you that "1 SCSI drive found".

Try booting from a floppie and then typing D:INSTALLR

I believe that RAMTEST "fills" all memory and then tests it. Some other programs
simply test for parity errors. From what you describe, the bad chip is in either
bank 3 or 4 of the 64K motherboard banks. The address that RAMTEST reported
means little to me, where the 1000 is concerned and my "wide" pinpoint (bank 3
or 4) is only a logical guess (the printer memory area).

As it only takes one bad cell in the right area of memory, you might want to
simply switch the chips in bank 3 to bank 1 and boot the computer. Look for
problems -- if none, switch bank 4 to bank 1 and reboot.

I do not envy you the task of testing in this way - one cell in one chip is a
real pain.

I believe what it senses is the sync signal, which is different for CGA and
hercules... and uses that to determine what kind of board is hooked up... with a
hercules you get 750x350 or such, yes? and with CGA 640x200...

My other monitor does much the same thing except it auto-senses CGA vs. EGA
sync...

At any rate... it does work quite nicely, and the graphics are quite clear,

Hence, if you ran FDISK on drive D, you then would have to FORMAT D: . To make

When a drive is re-partitioned without a format, sometimes you can still access

Jim,
Hi! I just upgraded to the 1000TL myself from a 1000(A) a few months back.
Let me tell you right off the bat, that the TL isn't 100% compatible with IBM
Hardware-wise. It only accepts 10" cards first of all. For some good news, you
don't have to buy any accessories from Radio Shack at all if you don't want to.
I highly reccommend that you subscribe to PCM Magazine for Tandy Computers. You
can do this online here at Delphi in the PCM Services area. There are many Non-
Radio Shack Advertisers in PCM with Great offers that out-discount Radio Shack
hands down. They've got the Modems, Serial Port Cards, VGA/EGA cards and
HardDrives/Cards galore! Of course the Salesmen at Radio Shack are going to be
evasive on this point since it's their bread and butter going out the door when
you don't buy from them, and of course we the consumer can't fault them for this
right? RIIIGHT! Well, anyway, I hope this answered some of your questions. Also,
there is a nice little command here on Delphi for finding out people's real
names from their handles (2 Commands actually). The First is "/Whois [Username]"
then the second (If the first one fails) is "/ENT [Username]". The first will
give detailed user information for users who have gone to the Membership area
and filled out their Membership Profiles. The Second command tells when a user
was last online and also gives their real names. All this of course is just my
way of saying "No" Misal isn't Mike Short. He's Mike Salisbury, online Helper

Mike, I've looked VERY HARD hard at the 64K chips. I went so far as to swap all
the chips out. I took an electronic cleaner (KLEEN-ALL) to the pin connectors
on the sockets thinking that maybe there was a little "dirt" somewhere. I also
thought about a socket being out, but it seems like I'd have problems with
several programs printing as well as trouble with my old DMP 130 printing
correctly. Still, I'll keep the possibility in mind.

I'm also still disturbed by pin 25 at the printer end, the return pin for the
Data6 signal being connected to pin 14 at the computer end, a "NC". While my
knowledge of printers and computers is limited, I think I remember reading that
for the circuits to be complete and functioning there must be a "return" line.
Reggie has also raised an interesting item concerning the parallel card edge in
his message, though I'd like him to double check what he stated.

Southwest you say... Hmm, I'll give it a try! It is also a relief to hear about
RAMTEST and the 1000.

My machine is an "Original 1000" which I purchased in July of '85. According to
the Tandy Tech. Ref. Manual for the original 1000 the Parallel Interface edge is
as follows:

PIN SIGNAL PIN SIGNAL

1 - PPSTROBE* 2 - Ground
2 - PPDATA0 4 - Ground
5 - PPDATA1 6 - Ground
7 - PPDATA2 8 - Ground
9 - PPDATA3 10 - Ground
11 - PPDATA4 12 - Ground
13 - PPDATA5 14 - NC
15 - PPDATA6 16 - Ground
17 - PPDATA7 18 - Ground
19 - PPACK* 20 - Ground
21 - PPBUSY 22 - Ground
23 - PPPAEM 24 - Ground
25 - PPBUSY* 26 - NC
27 - Ground 28 - PPFAULT
29 - NC 30 - PPINIT*
31 - Ground 32 - PPAUTOFEED*
33 - Ground 34 - NC

That's from page 9 of the "Tandy 1000 Technical Reference Manual" (Tandy part
no. 25-1504). Now, if your SX has pin 27 as PPAUTOFEED, I have to wonder what
other differences are there AND with some pins being different it's hard to
believe that the same cable could possible work properly for both versions of
the 1000. Are you sure about your pin 27 being PPAUTOFEED?

Place your DOS diskette in A: drive and type FDISK. Choose to see the partition
set up. You should have a primary DOS partition of 32 me and an extended
partition of 8 meg (this could also be 20-20, rather than 32-8).

In order to change the DOS partition, you need to re-low-level the hard drive.
After this is done run FDISK (once more) and set up a primary DOS partition of
20 or 32 meg. Next (even if you have to run FDISK again), set up your extended
DOS partition or 20 or 8 meg (depending on your primary).

After you have set your primary DOS partition, FDISK will tell you how much more
you can set up for the extended partition.

Once this is done run the DOS FORMAT on the C: and D: drives.

Your problem is certainly strange, Jay. The problem with not "being there", is
that it is hard to speculate on what to try next.

The Centronics end of a Tandy cable is standard, while the card edge is not. I
thought that you had tried another Tandy cable with the same result?

Thanks a bunch Steve. I just subscribed to PCM magazine, but haven't received my
first issue yet. I don't mind buying from Radio Shack, but once in a while I
like to get things a little less expensive! Sorry for the wrong identity on
MISAL. I have a friend who uses that handle, but I don't know if he is on
DELPHI. His name is Mike Short, so when I saw MISAL and saw the name MIKE at the
end of several notes, I just naturally assumed that was the Mike I knew. Sorry
Mr. Salisbury!! Well, thanks for the info Steve. I hope to type at you again
sometime!!!

guessing his identity wrong. I just thought I'd give you a little helpful info
for future use. I use the "/Ent [Username]" all the time. It's the quickest way
to findout someones first name when replying to messages that don't leave you
any clues. You can use the "/Ent" command from within the message editor here in
the forum so It's really helpful. Well, Chat at ya later...Jax...

     3270 Emulation?
     From: RFREY To: ALL

After years of thier po-poing of PC's in my company, the mainframe guys have
been charged with getting all the different computers that the different
departments have bought into sync. Included are mainframe links for those in
offices where they will be w anting to collect data for our new MRP II software.

Before I head into the vaults in my basement to search through old PCM mags (and
Halloween tommorrow is scarey enough) -- Does anyone know of a "half" size
3270 emulation board that will fit in the 1000 series. If none available
there's always the optio D BUT they (IRMA that is) woun't say that their
board will work with Tandys.

Comments from anyone with experience will be greatly appreciated.

Seems the tech manual from Tandy has at least one error. Tandy says that pin 14
at the computer end is a ground and not a "NC" as the manual state. Still, even
Tandy's person agreed that the Autofeed on the printer should connect with the
autofeed on the computer end. Tandy tells me that if that is the pin out for
the printer then I do need a custom cable. Strange that he couldn't explain to
me why the two biggest selling printers in America - Epson and Panasonic (the
latter took over the top spot this year from the former) must have a custom
made cable in order to connect to a Tandy computer. I'm not convinced this is
the cause of my problem, but I will take his suggestion and see what happens
when I rewire the cable to have the two autofeed pins connect.

I have two Panasonic printers and neither needs a specially configured parallel
cable. Tandy had many problems with their DMP printers and the auto-linefeed
(pin #14). It did not agree with programs such as Print Shop and other graphics
oriented applications (produced an extra linefeed). This may be the reason why
the cables do not have pin 14 connected. If this is so, it is news to me.

The Irma board wil cause you headaches in a Tandy. Interrupts 2 and 5 are
switched in these machines. The terminal emulation can be software driven. If
you can get past the interrupt problem.
