     LONG FILES
     From: DLHARRELL To: ALL

I HAVE DOWNLOADED THE TOPICS INDEX FILES FROM THE UTILITIES TOPIC IN THE PC
DATABASE. THE FILE IS IN THREE SEPARATE TEXT FILES. FINE. EASH IS TOO LONG TO
READ IN MY SYSTEM!! (A TANDY 1000HX WITH 640K AND AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE). NONE
OF THE FILES FIT INTO ANY OF MY WORD PROCESSORS. THE ONLY WAY I CAN VIEW THEM
IS WITH THE DOS "TYPE" COMMAND OR BY PRINTING THE FILE. ANY SUGGESTIONS. ANYONE?

David, There is a program called LIST.COM which will allow you to load any size
file into memory and read it (Text Files that is). It loads as much as memory
allows and when you get to the end of memory, it loads the rest of the file over
the same memory as the previous sections. It should be online here in either the
utility or Telecommunications Database over in the PC Compatibles SIG. It's a
Simple Text file reader which uses Page Up and Page down to take you through the
file at your own pace.

     From: JAYSTEIN To: MISAL

SUCCESS! I was about to give up though after reading your last message
confirming that Panasonic's printers did not require a custom cable. I've felt
from the beginning that the cause was probably something simple and that has
made it all the more frustrating. The culprit was a seemingly harmless, but
forgotten line in my CONFIG.SYS file. I couldn't even remember what it was. I
was about to erase both the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and then rebuild
them one item at a time, stopping to reboot and run WordPerfect before adding
the next item when I spotted the Device driver, DEVICE=LPDRVR.SYS. I didn't
know what it was, but the acronym just sort of jumped out at me -
LinePrinterDRiVeR.SYStem. That may not be right, but I figured I had the cause.
Sure enough, erasing that one line solved all the printer problems. It took me
20 minutes to discover just what the driver was for. It seems it is a driver
that is sometimes required when connecting a Tandy printer to a Tandy Computer
in order that certain programs can run. I can understand WordPerfect and
Panasonic's support groups not recognizing it as problem, but Fort Worth should
have thought of that when I mentioned that the only changes I had made were in
switching to a new, non-Tandy, printer from an old Tandy DMP-130, adding the
required new cable, and of course the new printer drivers for WordPerfect, the
latter of which had already been checked. I have to admit though I had no memory
of the device driver. It must have been something I had originally added to my
CONFIG.SYS file back in '85 or '86. Well, it's been 60 days of frustration and
over a hundred dollars in expenses (mostly long distant phone calls and
gasoline) and I've probably spent well over 120 hours working on the problem,
but at this point I'm just happy to have a working printer!

I do especially though want to thank you and Reggie for all the suggestions you
each offered and I certainly owe you both a BIG THANK YOU for your time and
efforts.

Yes, you can ugrade to a 2400 bps modem. Yes, you can get it from R.S., but will
pay more for it. Any industry standard modem will work with your EX. However,
you need a serial port for the EX, so that you can use an "external" modem, as
the EX expansion is not standard.

     Strange problem...
     From: JIMBROCK To: ALL

To those who may have experienced this problem:

I ran the IBM Ver 3.30 DOS last night for some special software I was using at
home. After doing so, I had some strange problems with the DIR command on the
3.5 inch drive only (I have 3.5 and 5.25 inch drives on my system). When I first
inserted a 3.5 inch diskette into the drive and did a DIR, everytng appears as
it should. But, if I insert another 3.5 inch diskette and do a DIR, you get the
previous diskettes directory! Also, if you do a DIR on the very first diskette
and then remove it from the drive, then do a DIR, you will still get a directory
from the diskette you had in the drive. It is like the diskette is still in the
drive. It does not do this on the 5.25 inch drive, but it seemed to follow the
3.5 inch drive no matter which drive I had set it to (drive A: or B:). The only
way to clear it was to do a DIR for the 5.25 inch drive and get a DRIVE NOT
READY error, but then after you do a DIR on the next diskette, you have the same
problem. I tried resetting to factory settings and running SETUPTL several
times, but that didn't work! I ended up removing the battery from the computer
after powering down and left it out all day. This seemed to correct the problem.
Everything now works as it should. I hope this helps someone if they are having
the same problem....

Yeah, as a matter of fact, I called those folks! Saw the add (actually,
looked through all the ads for it) and called them right away. The
Express 286 board will *not* work in the SL. Only the SX. Rats. Has
something to do with the timing of the system, I think.

Well, I sold out. After looking for ways to speed up the SL (and
subsequently giving up) I purchased a 286 plain clone. I still have
my SL sitting here (and I really miss that keyboard let me tell you)
but I couldn't afford one of the Tandy 286 models, and for what this
would have cost to upgrade to a 286-type speed, I could have (and did)
purchase(d) the clone. Has the high-density drives (both types), a
higher density hard DISK (not a card, which means I can really expand
media), and it cost me less than a 286 in difference (assuming I'll
get what I plan for my SL).

I am really going to miss 3-voice sound, the new keyboard (best I've
ever used), and all the Tandy SIGs for help (like here). I always
had folks to turn to when a problem arrised. Now I'm in noman's land
(or is that, no BRANDs land) in this respect. But I had to do something.

Thanks for the help, none the less. I'm still subscribing to PCM and
will read the Tandy threads. I just won't have the machine anymore
(Tandy's all I've ever owned).

Well, that USED to be the story more than it is now. Tandy incorporates
a different sound system and a different video system, but everything
else seems to be pretty software AND hardware compatible (my personal
experience here). Tandy machines steal some of your conventional (base
640K RAM) for use with the video memory, which has caused problems recently
for me. Other than that, no, no problems.

The 10-inch slot problem is only a problem in a few cases (cards are
getting so short these days). You won't be able to just go and stick
anyone's hard card in a slot (mostly, these are a full 12 inches) though
you can find a lot of manufacturers who make 10 inch cards for Tandy
machines. Expansion memory boards are another cavet (got to have somewhere
to put all those DRAMS). However, modems? No, you should be able
to stick ANY internal (newly built at least) modem in your system.

I had a 2400bps FAX modem in my SL with room to spare.

Well, we share the same opinion. Did that about three weeks ago. Mine's

Hi Mike. I haven't had a two-way conversation on here in ages! Funny, I
sort of abandoned Tandy when I converted to MS-DOS machinery (I have a Model I
and some Model 4's) back in June '87 or so. I decided I didn't want to deal
with the compatibility issues (I loved the 2000; its speed, disk capacity,
hi-rez video, etc. - well ahead of the competition, but hardware and mostly
software incompatible). Then a couple of weekends ago, Tandy had a "tent" sale
locally. Seems they're shutting down a lot of computer centers and brought stuff
from all over the area. Anyway, I went there to check out the software prices
and check it all out and found a 4000LX (20 MHz '386) floor sample for sale with
full warranty, 1.44MB floppy, serial/parallel board, and 101 keyboard. No hard
drive or video, but it had 10MB RAM installed (which I found out later - 2MB is
standard). Anyway, $1199 took it all away. Couldn't pass it up. That takes
care of Christmas, b'day, Father's day, etc. for a year or two! Hopefully
they've got the compatibility worked out!

Happy computing with your new equipment - I upgraded from 4.77 MHz 8088 XT
clone. BIIIIGGGG difference!

Yes you can buy a plus-serial port from Tandy for your EX but your better off
buying it from a company like Perry computers (800)248-3823 or Computer Plus (
800)343-8124 or any other authorized RadShak dealers. Their prices are usually
superior. I own an EX also and use an external modem. I use a Paradise EGA-480
card in my EX but I had to do some serious hacking to put it in there, other
than that there are no EGA cards specifically designed to work in the EX or HX
for that matter.

Not really sure what you mean by "cache the 768K in this fashion", Jim. You can
actually have base memory set aside as cache. The scenario I envisioned was a
disk cache. This would report the directory again, even if another disk were

Emerson has been around a good while and does a creditable job. The VGA monitor
prices sound "too" cheap. Find out what the "dot pitch" of these monitors are.
You should settle for no higher than a 0.31 dot pitch. If the monitors (I assume
the $150 on is gray scale) are within this price range, I would not be afraid of
Emerson.

Just a note - I just bought Panasonic Multi-frequency, color, 0.28 dot pitch VGA
monitor, capable of 1024 x 768 resolution for $379. This will give you a scale
to judge by.

Thank you! Thank you! I thought this istallation would be a 15 min. piece of

sent me, and the original ribbon cable was too short. I tried moving the
motherboard conn ector on the cable, one wire broke. Went to Radio Shack for new
ribbon cable, no got. Eliminated "C" drive connector and rearranged other
connectors so I could use cable. Blew half day trying to make drive work. Laying
in bed at 10:30 I realized the face plate was wrong color, they sent wrong
drive. Got and installed correct drive, now modified cable doesn't fit this
drive. Using cable they sent with drive for 31/2" installation, connectors
are marked for instalation, no indexing pins on 51/4" conn ectors, while

Don't get me wrong--- I love radio shack, and my fine tandy products in

ms, and I guarente that 20 megs isn't enough. My mother has a 20 meg and all she
complains about is her lack of disk space. I have a TL. When I needed a hard
drive I refered to my handy PCM's. On page 126 of November's PCM is an ad for
Micro Systems (where I got my card.) You can get 49 megs at 28ms pre-formatted
for the TL-2. True, I'm talking cards, but I'm sure you can spare one of your 4
slots. If your sure you'll never use your 5 1/4" drive bay, you can get 64 megs
at 28ms for $359, personally, I couldn't live without my 5 1/4" drive. What your
paying for at RS is the LOCAL service, although the people at Micro Systems
where very helpful.

People are going to tell you that it isn't state of the art, and they're
right... which is precisely why I recommend it... It's theory of mine called
"Last week's technology." LWT is often pretty good and ALWAYS pretty cheap. I
use an EGA monitor and card the monitor has .31 dot pitch, and only cost
$250.00 BRAND NEW... the cards are similarly inexpensive... No it doesn't have
either the resolution or color variety of VGA... but if you need a bargain, I
think it's the way to go... If money is no object, sure, go VGA, but if it is a
concern, look at last week's technology.

My NX-1000 has an 8k buffer when you aren't using a downloaded font. When you

Needless to say, I don't use the downloaded fonts very often. Actually, I've

Unfortunately that's a common misnomer. DOS supports 26 devices through drive
letters A-Z. Unfortunately, the hardware limits you to the actual number of
drives that you can access. Standard MFM and RLL hard disk controllers limit
you to two hard drives max. Standard SCSI controllers fare slightly better
allowing 8 drives max. Standard floppy controllers also handle 2 drives max,
but there are 3rd party cards to expand that to 4 drives.

On another note, Adaptec has just introduced a $200 SCSI controller for AT class
machines that allows 56 SCSI devices on one controller card. More drives than
letters then!! :-)

     From: THESTRANGER To: BRUGGERT

By combining standard RLL & MFM contollers, the maximum number of Hard Disks you
can run is 4 (2 contollers). The reason for this is that there are not
unlimited combinations of IRQ and interrupts available in the BIOS. The SCSI
controller I mentioned would be limited to 24 drives under DOS. It's primary
use for network file servers allows it to access 56 drives. That's because
network file servers don't run DOS.

Under DOS, I don't think we'll ever see that level of support. Technology is
advancing to the point where DOS is becoming obsolete. What I mean by that, is
you can only expand an operating system so far and maintain compatibility across
the line. After a certain point, expansion becomes patching. Apply too many
"pieces of tape", and the whole thing comes crashing to the ground. I don't
think that I'm far off in predicting that within the next 10 years, DOS will be
a thing of the past. What takes it's place is yet to be seen, but it won't be
DOS.

The monitor was a standard (I assume) 640 X what ever (can't remember). I didn't
look for the dot pitch, so I don't know what this would be. Both monitors were
color. They were for sale at a store called Wal-Mart. Do you have any of these
stores out your way? Anyway, I'll check the dot pitch. I don't actually know
what the major difference was between the two monitors other than what looked to
be cosmetic on the outside. I'll check again and let you know. Thanks!!

I hav% a question ( one of those dumb ones!). If I go with a third party vendor
and considering the cost involved ( seeing how money is tight around here),
which would be better to use:

The built in CGA and a CGA monitor (for the 1000TL) or going with the EGA
card and monitor? What, if any, would the major difference be?

About renaming the deskmate directory:

Bruggert's method will work as long as you have enough space on your hard drive
for 2 copies of the deskmate files. Otherwise it bombs out with a disk full
error.

The most elegant solution would be to use a utility like Norton or XTREE that
will rename directories for you!

In any case, be sure to put the line 'SET DMCONFIG=<new directory name>' in your
autoexec.bat file or deskmate won't be able to find your files.

Mine has something like 34K. Added a chip and can't remember how much it had to

some programs that contain 20-30 different fonts that I can download to the
printer and they work pretty good. Even found a program that let me create my
own. I will admit, I played around with downloading fonts for a week or two and
gave it up. The built in fonts of the 1124 or good enough for me and faster
than the "graphic" fonts that you download to it.

The price sounds good. The fact that it is a hardcard leads me to believe that
it is an MFM or RLL (older encoding).

Check to make "sure" that the card will physically fit in your TL. If so, ask
Egghead to let you "try" it in your machine. If it functions (it should), then
decide whether you wish to make the purchase.

You might also ask the speed of the drive in milliseconds. I suggest that you
accept nothing higher than 28ms. A drive with that capacity will be a dog at
anything greater.

Your TL is a 286 type machine. Adding memory to it will allow you to use it as a
virtual disk (RAM disk) or -- for LIM (Lotus, Intel, Microsoft) compatible
programs, such as Lotus 123. Several swapping programs (like Back & Forth,
Software Carousel) will also take advantage of it. However, you can only use
extended memory, with a LIM compatible expansion board to take advantange of
anything other than a RAM disk (and a few other progams).

Well, from what I understand XCOPY will copy the files in your subdirectories if
you put the /S switch on the command line - except that they'll all be in the
same directory after the copy! So, to make sure you get the stuff in the
directory you want, you'll have to do the XCOPY on each subdir individually.

Best of luck!

Have you tried searching the databases? There may be a utility to rename
directories in there somewhere.

You might want to look at using an autoswitch EGA monitor with the CGA circuit
in your Tandy... The one I have will work with either an EGA Card or a CGA card.
It is available from Advanced Computer products in CA. they advertise is
Computer shopper. Now, on a CGA card you still get 640x200 resolution, BUT you
have .31 dot pitch which makes for VERY CLEAR 640x200 resolution. If, for
example you compare it with a Tandy CM-11 you will find much clearer text
display, and crisper edges on graphics. I won't even mention the CM-5, or, as
I call it, "THE MONITOR FROM HELL." Besides which, the NCR costs LESS than a
CM-11, and only a bit more than a CM-5 on sale. With an EGA card, it looks
better yet, but the point is that you can add that later if you want to.

The Micro Mainframe software patch for LIMS 4.0 does not work completely. You
really must have 4.0 hardware to have it work properly. The micromainframe

board gives all kinds of problems. Much farther back in the messages (or

Joel,
There are loads of 2400 Baud Modem's at great prices in PCM Magazine! I buy
all my perhiferal's from their advertisers now because of the LOW LOW Prices.
The only difference between Internal and External that need concern you is SLOT
usage. If the TX has a Serial Port Built in you can plug in an external to it
without using up a slot which an Internal will use. If the TX doesn't have a
built in Serial Port, you'll have to Buy a Serial Port card (Which if you buy
one with two ports also gives you a Mouse port on the extra port). It all
depends on how far you plan to expand the TX later on. I reccommend an External
myself. It is less of a draw on the power supply with it's own power supply
built in. This gives your machine a longer lifespan. Also, if the TX doesn't
have the Built in Serial Port, I highly reccommend buying a Serial Card with at
least 2 RS-232 Ports on it. You may not need or want a mouse now, but there are
other things down the line which you may want to hook up serially. Well, I've
been a bit long winded here, but I hope I've helped. Chat at ya later... Jax...

     RE: 2000 (Re: Msg 17458)
     From: THESTRANGER To: EYEPHOTOGUY

Can't help you with the hardware problem, but can answer the software question.
The T2000 is a BIOS compatible machine. Was released at the same time as the
original IBM PC. Any program that uses BIOS calls to do it's video work, will
run on the T2000 with no problem. Unfortunately, most programs try to access
the video memory directly, which is not in the same location as a PC, so the
program crashes. There is a program in the Tandy Specific database to allow CGA
programs to run on the 2000, even if they do try to access the hardware
directly. The program requires that you have the full 768K of RAM.

If you're technically inclined, there is also a document in the Tandy Specific
topic that provides a work-around to memory upgrading. This involves
piggybacking chips on your memory board, so if your not a hardware wiz, you may
want to avoid that.

To get to the databases from here, type PC COMPAT followed by DA TAN.

Yup....you have to tell dos what drive is a 720K drive. In your CONFIG.SYS

Replace the X above with 0 for drive A or 1 for drive B.

printer 3) Upgrade to DMP2100P status with conversion kit (Does Tandy still
offer?)

I would much prefer options 2 or 3, in that order. Does anyone know if (1) there
is a software filter that will take the IBM code sent by most software for
graphics and "convert" it to commands that my printer will understand in real
time, and (2) if Tandy is still offering an upgrade kit, and what it costs?

DOS 3.3 (or 4.01) will work on your TX. The TX, unlike the newer TL does not
have to look to the ROM for DOS pointers. If you have 768K in your TX, you will
probably loose the 128K above 640K, however. There is a chance that you may also
see a problem with graphics -- depending on what software you are running. For
this problem, stay away from Tandy programs that make use of Tandy's enchanced
graphics. Normal, PC-compatible software should run just fine.

at a local Radio Shack. All the other stores in my area are offering the same
deal and one manager told me it is a National program.

Even a dedicated COCO/OS9 nut like me can't resist that kind of hardware
bargain.

I also grabbed a bunch of software at bargain prices. DB-III Symphony,
Framework, PFS/graph all for $50.00 (total).

I know that this is about the least "IBM Compatible" MS-DOS machine ever built,
but I'm having a ball. It also makes a dandy remote terminal for my COCO.

Of course, this is an "as is" kinda deal. I had to make a replacemant for a
missing HD data cable, clean some contacts on the plug-in memory board and tear
out a few of my remaining wisps of hair before I got the thing running.
Database files here were a lot of help - found some stuff on Genie too. Now I
gotta buy some memory chips so I can run that "Symphony " package. John

I had assumed that the LP 1000 had a membrane control panel as the newer Tandy
lasers. It appears that the LP 1000 is set for a page length of 62. This is not
unusual. What you need to do is sent the code to the printer to set it to 66
lines per page. This is taken care of from the control panels or printer code
sends on the newer machines. The HP codes for 66 lines per page at 10 cpi:

 \027&l7.27C\027(s0p10H

Note that the all letter except the "C" are lowercase.

I'm afraid I'll have to agree with you there. Especially concerning the
video memory situation. You're right on target with that one. AND, in
addition to the initial loss of conventional RAM, you can run into problems
now and then with programs that try to overrright
(oops) overright that portion of RAM (doesn't happen very much, but
when it does there's little you can do). The loss of the 32k RAM
(or whatever it is) is quite substantial. Especially when you
consider the extended video modes of the new 1000's. That HAS to
take even more from conventional RAM! And too, I was never too pleased
with the "service" in Ft. Worth. The only help I ever really got came
from the retail fellers...and they're busy enough. PCM is a big help
too. It was because of the availability of PCM that I decided to get
that last Tandy. Too, I know now if I have something screwy (which in
fact I presently do with my new AT) I can't seek assistance from PCM

Well, the 4000LX *is* (I believe) a true AT (probably like an SX I would
guess). If the case is full-sized, and you can stick a standard card in
it, then you'll be really livin! I miss the sound (Deskmate's music) and
that keyboard!

     Problems With New Modem
     From: ROJAS To: ALL

[D2400 baud modem [DI can last only about 15 minutes within Delphi before my
Bitcom software ann announces "framing error" and throws me out (disconnects).
In addition I keep getting symbols printing to the screen instead of the
alphabet when I go into the PC/SIG database to look at software. Does anyone
have any suggestions? Some techies at work think I may have a "dirty" phone
line. I think my modem is working OK is working OK. Do other people suffer
from simliiar line problems and are there any solutions? Thank you for any help
you can offer.

When I was installing my hard drive in my 1000 TL/2 a Tandy Salesman told me he
had an adapter bracket that allowed me to install the hard drive in the 5.25"
bay. I did not take him up on the offer but I assume it exists. I don't know if
you went to a regular Radio Shack or a omputer center. I would try the latter.
I installed my hard drive in he 3.25" bay and my second 3.5" drive in the 5.25"
bay with the stock Tandy adapter bracket 25-1076 and the fit is perfect and the
econd floppy drive works great. Good luck.

It seems that the LP 1000 in LaserJet+ mode defaults to using three-line top and
bottom margins, reducing the printing area from 66 to 60 lines.

-Charlie

P.S. It gets worse -- I can't use some downloadable fonts that Tandy provides
because they use different names to avoid paying royalties. There is no
14-point HP Helvetica font for example provided, instead they say to use
the Swiss 721 Bold at 14.4-point size. It should work except that First
Publisher does not recognize Swiss 721 Bold as a LaserJet+ font. The same
also goes for using Dutch 801 to emulate Times Roman.

The Tandy Sister SIG is called PC-Compatibles, Mike. Try looking for help there.
