     scanner/deskmate
     From: NIKKI To: ALL

I have posted this problem in the past and rceived quite a few responses to it.
However, there has yet to be a solution. I have a 1000 TL/2 with a hard drive,
720K floppy, 360K floppy, mouse, ext. modem, and hand scanner. There is defin-
itely a problem between the scanner and the DESKMAT music/sound program. When
the program is initiated I hear the speaker momentarily come on. Afterwards I
am sent into limbo. I believe it is a conflict with the DMA chip or perhaps the
IRQ ( interrupts ). When the scanner board is removed from the computer,
Deskmate performs fine. With the scanner card back in - lock up. This is a
curious problem, I like both applications, but the scanner is a neater toy, so
I'll forego the music and sound. Since some more people have gotten more toys
for Xmas, and the dust has settlrd, I figured I post this in case someone may
have cured this similar problem. By the way, turning the printer on and on line
does no good. Thanks for any ideas ...............NIKKI

Right - def is a config.sys command - I guess I must have made a mistake in
entrering because it doesn't seem to was to recognize drivparm. It recognizes
driver.sys ok but insists on calling my "A" drive "D". This causes a problem
for all the stuff I've written that automatically dumps to "A" because he now
doesnt think there's an "A". So, for the moment back to 3.2.22 till I get it

  Hilton,

I take it, then, that turning on the printer . . .

. . . was all you needed to do to get DeskMate's Sound and
  Music applications working. Great!

Now, if someone would tell me how I could temporarily disable my VGA card in
order to run a program using the Tandy 16-color CGA mode, I'd be kicking up my
heels, too. Sometimes, i need to run older programs that have no provision for
VGA and I'd like to use the so-called TCGA. For instance, Personal DeskMate 2
must be run in that mode.

Anyway, glad to help a bit.

  Robert,

I hope my responding to your message . . .

. . . does nothing to dissuade others from also offering
help, because I have little technical knowledge. What I do have, though, is a
  very similar setup to yours.

  I have a Tandy 1000TL with a hard drive, a VGA monitor, a 720 drive, a 360
drive, a mouse (on Com2), a modem (on COM1) and a hand scanner. Since I have
compiled a bit more information since we last corresponded, perhaps some of it
  will help.

You have a TL/2 and I don't know what type monitor.

Anyway, I ran a program that looks at your system and tells you what is what,
and what is where. here's what it told me about mine:

IRQ 0 System Timer DMA 0 RAM Refresh
IRQ 1 Keyboard DMA 1 (blank)
IRQ 2 (available) DMA 2 Floppy disk
       IRQ 3 COM2 DMA 3 Fixed disk
       IRQ 4 COM1
       IRQ 5 Fixed (hard) disk
       IRQ 6 Floppy disk
       IRQ 7 LPT1

It also told me that LPT2 (my second printer port) was unassigned, but I only
have one printer, so (thus far, at least) that does not concern me.

I noted that the report said nothing about my VGA, and someone had told me
that it uses IRQ2, so maybe it is not available, after all. The program did
report it saw a VGA, but it did not indicate that IRQ 2 was being used.

Anyway, I set my scanner to use IRQ 3. Why? Well, at the time I had only COM1
and did not have a COM2, so it was not being used. When I did add the COM2, I
found it worked anyway, with BOTH the COM2 port (which I use for the mouse)
and the scanner on IRQ3. I figured don't fix what's not broke. I mean, you
don't ever use both the mouse and the scanner at same time anyway, do you?

Yes, I do use DeskMate on a daily basis. No, I have no trouble with Sound and
Music (except having to be sure the printer is online and on -- and we've
  already covered that quirk).

So, can you set your scanner to use IRQ3?

Might try it and see what happens.

What I would NOT do is set the scanner to IRQ 5, because on an XT-class
machine, such as the TL (not sure about the TL/2) hardware interrupt #5 is
reserved for the hard disk. The system MIGHT seem to operate normally, but
once you started scanning, the hard disk would be subject to a massive loss of
data. So, don't mess with IRQ5.

Given the built-in hard drive controller on the TL/2, I don't know what
  interrupt it uses.

As for DMA (Direct Memory Access) channels, my program indicated that DMA 1
had nothing -- whatever that means. But, as you can see above, it is also the
only one not being used, even though my scanner manual says it is OK to have a
conflict with a device using DMA 1, as long as both are not used at the same
time. Since I might use the scanner with the hard drive, or floppy drive, I
did not want to assign it to DMA 2 or DMA3. Since I did not really know what a
conlfict with RAM refresh would so, I picked DMA1. So far, OK.

A solution? Well, have you tried changing the I/O address on the interface
card (via DIP switches)? I have mine set to 3E0-3E7, but I have seven other
possible selections. Maybe if you tried an alternate I/O address, you could
solve your problem? Can you change yours via DIP switches? If you can,
remember to also change it in any configuration file you may have used to
  install the scanner.

                                   -- Jim Reed

P.S. I sure would like to see someone come on here and explain this DMA
stuff, so I'd feel more comfortable with it.

Conference area, is to do a /WHO. Make sure you put the / character in.
That will tell you who is online in this area. Users with () around their
names, are in Conference. Example:

MISAL (RLYOUNG) NICKOLS (THESTRANGER) FROBOTZ

In the about listing gathered by doing a /WHO, RLYOUNG and THESTRANGER are

JO GROUPNAME will get you in their Co.

TAndy TX & Paradise vga plus card
     From: WILLIAMM To: ALL

I recently installed the Paradise VGA Plus card in my TX and have a couple of
questions for anyone who knows the answer. First of all, does the video switch
on the motherboard have to be set to off? Second, when using the driver that was
included with the card "VGAPLUS" followed by the command 13243 hoping to get a
132 column display in Wordperfect 5.0, I still get an 80 column. I have set wp
5.0 up for vga but as of yet I cannot get the desired display. The manual that
came with the card says that it works on wp 4.? so I am assumming that it should
also work on 5.0.

Thanks in advance for any help that someone may have to offer.

P.S. Is there a bug in the bios of the tx that would force the vga card to
downshift to ega? I have heard of one but who knows? I have

     RE: Conference (Re: Msg 15867)

I think you have mis-understood what Conference is for. Conference allows 2 or
more users to "talk" to each other directly instead of through E-Mail or the
Forums.

In order to use it you need at least 2 people. If there is someone you would
like to talk to, you can use the PAGE command (Ex: PAGE FROBOTZ) and the person
will be notified that you wish to talk to them. They would then enter the
conference area and answer Y to the question "Do you want to talk to so and so"

Now, if you want to join an existing Conference, go to Conference, type JOIN <
enter> Then type a slash mark and WHO and you will get a list of the

conferences available. Type the number of the Conference and you will join it.

Hope that clears up some of the confusion.

A few years ago, I (and several friends) purchased V20 chips for our T1000's. We
found no signifigant speed increase (nor will it help your express board).

In other related incidents, the V20 caused various system problems -- associated
with various hardware add-ons.

When running a diagnostic test with the V20 installed, the SI rating "showed" an
increase in through-put. This was deception, however. In "real-world"
applications the V20 was no faster than the 8088. The clock cycle did not
increase and therefore the through-put did not.

the VGA will also run in the <supported!!!> CGA mode! I got a copy of the

didn't include the little support file with the package). Anyway, Deskmate is
looking for a VGA support file. That file will have to be added to your
Deskmate directory before you can run the program!!! Talk to MISAL ("the
Wizzard") for more details on this. Furthermore, if enough people complain to
Tandy about it, maybe they'll start including it with the "package." Good luck,

     Keyboard buffers for me
     From: MIKEBASIC To: DOSWIZZ

Mr. DOS: MISAL ("the Wizzard") told me that you knew something about those
wonderful little .COM files that will extend the keyboard buffer from 15
characters to [a higher number]. I have run several (I mean SEVERAL) different
keyboard buffer 'enhancers' and have had problems with my SL afterwards. What
happens is, the keyboard buffer works fine, but the SL's cursor keys are
affected. When I use the cursor (either the extended, easier- to-use <3-part>
cursor pad, or the numeric pad), the SL prints an extended ASCII character
instead of actually moving the cursor. Thus, there seems] to be an interrupt
problem. My question for you, Mr. DOS, is do you know of any new-Tandy specific
keyboard buffer 'enhancers' that will work on my system? Secondly, I'm sure
you've heard of KEY-FAKE, a program put out by Ziff's PC Magazine. It's
"forces" keystrokes into applications, sort of like pc tools. When I use
KEY-FAKE, two things happen. First, the program hooks vectors (stays
resident!). Secondly, I have to press some kind of key before it will "dump"
the information into the application. Note that I used to have a 1000 SX, used
both of the above mentioned programs, and never had any of the problems I am
mentioning happen. Your input will be greatly appreciated. MIKEBASIC.

now, HEY, I GOTTA SLEEP SOMETIME!!! Get me started on a new Tetris-like game,
and I'll be up all night!! (Just kidding, please do send it). I just received
notification from AAJC (a publication: American Association of Community and
Junior Colleges) that an article I submitted prasing Richland College here in
Dallas, will be published. It's no great accomplishment, mind you. It's more
of a letter to the editor than anything else. (Actually, I'm down-talking it.
It's an essay; a critique). Nice to have it under my belt. ***By the looks of
Logic Blocks, you DO know quite a BIT about assembler. I am interested!!! Good
luck, and keep in touch. Your Friend, MIKEBASIC (the great).

     From: DANCOLLINS To: MIKEBASIC

Mike, I believe PGA stands for Professional Graphics Array although my Generic
Cadd refers to it as Professional Graphics Adaptor. As I understand it, IBM had
a video upgrade available several years ago (the date code on the monitor I have
is 49/85) which included a VGA card and monitor and sold for approx. $3000.
They didn't sell very many!!! I don't know much about the card, but the monitor
can be modified to accept VGA signals.

Thanks for the BASIC routines, but, I returned the ATI VGA card I had before I
picked up your message (I couldn't risk not finding a way to make it work). I
believe I'm just going to buy an IBM PC or AT (used, at a good price, of
course), that should solve at least most of my compatability problems. Thanks

     RE: telecommunication (Re: Msg 15917)

  Raymond,

It sounds to me as if you may be using host mode . . .

. . . in ProComm Plus, then trying to log onto a service using
the same parameters (1200, 8,1,N or whatever) you were using for host mode.
That, of course, may or may not work.

If you use the Directory to place your call, then the system should change the
parameters to whatever you have preset them to when you pick that entry from
the directory. But, if you are just manually logging on, then ProComm (having
not been told otherwise) just uses whatever parameters were last set.

For instance, let's say you use ProComm's host mode and have it set for 1200
bps, 8 bits, 1 stop bit, no parity. Then, you exit host mode and do a manual
log on without using the directory mode, well you'd be using 1200,8,1,N when
Tymnet is wanting 1200,7,1,E and you'd have the troubles you report.

So, to me, at least, it sounds like the source of your problem.

Just before trying to log on via Tymnet, use ProComm's ALT-P command to have
the Line/Port Setup window pop up and make sure you have the "Current
Settings" line set to 1200 (or 300, or 2400, if it can handle it and you have
2400) and E (for even parity) 7 bits, 1 stop bit, and COM1 (for Com port 1,
unless you know you are using COM2). The top line of the ALT-P window would
  read:

                CURRENT SETTINGS: 1200,E,7,1,COM1

That will make sure you have correct parameters before dialing. Tymnet and
Telenet do NOT use the same parameters.

Frankly, given a choice between Telenet and Tymnet, I'd think you'd prefer
Telenet, anyway. Most of us do. I use Tymnet only when Telenet is down.

                                      -- Jim

Thanks for your suggestions. You may very well be close to the solution.
However, I should add that my problem does not really come up after using host
mode. For example, I started my computer tonight and went into Procomm; from
there I used Tymnet, and the same results-- garbage, followed by theA, followed
by a disconnect (later). I did not go into host mode at all. I have also tried
logging on using Procommplus test druive which I down loaded sometime ago. I
have never changed anything on that disk and my parameters are as yousuggest
i.e. 1200,E,7,1 Com1 on thetest drive as well as the program disk I bought. So,
I remain at sea as to what I have done wrong all of a sudden. I have set my
general modem commands in accord with the manual for using host. This whole
thing really mistifies me. Would contacting Datastrom do any good at all?? I use
tyment by the way only because it is easier to type the A than all the stuff
telenet requires. Thanks for the advice. I am using the parameters you suggest
and we will see what happens. Rafles

  Well, Raymond,

What you really need to do is create an autolog file . . .

. . . so that logging onto Telenet is as easy as logging onto
Tymnet. Frankly, I never really thought of one as being easier than the other,
since I always use a script file (autolog) when logging on either one.

We have sample script files here in our Telecommunications datbase. All you do
is change the passwords and phone numbers to those applicable to you and your
location, and they're ready to use!

You'll have to look at your modem's manual to find out how to send those
commands. Some modems have switches which you can set to these defaults.

Look in your book on how to set DTR and Carrier Detect to NORMAL.

     Hardcard/Harddrive
     From: LPLAV To: ALL

Hi everybody!

Question time is here again! We have a Tandy Tx-1000 with a 32meg
internal hardcard(harddrive?) and a brand new external 64meg one. To put the new
64meg on we removed the external 32meg . Is there anyway that I can put the
external 32meg back on. The 64meg has it's own external power supply (just in
case you need to know that). Our machine also has a 51/4" disk and a 3 1/2 inch
disk.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Most Controller Cards made nowadays support at least Two Drives. Depending on
the Card all you should need is the Extra Cable to add the Old Drive to the new
Card, or the New Drive to the old Card. I have the Tandy 1000(A) with a 32 Meg
HardCard and a year later I added a 48 Meg Hard Drive in my B: Drive bay by
getting the new Drive with the Special Cables. Check with the people you bought
the New drive from and see if they can give you the specifics. The people at
MegaHaus talked me through the procedure of adding the 2nd drive to my existing
HardCard, and I saved the expense of an additional controller card. Chow Fer

     T1000 BIOS Fix
     From: LARHAR To: WILLIAMM

Bill, the following was posted on CIS in response to a question regarding VGA
and the TL. It apparently works for all the 1000 series. I have it installed
on my TX and it appears to work. The problems I am having are software and not
related to the Paradise card.

As to the report on the signon re the EGA, this will bypass it. I have the
program loaded as part of my AUTOEXEC.BAT. As such, it loads after the initial
report. Your screen will say EGA CONNECTED but not to worry, the VGA is there
and will be seen. The TX's motherboard video DIP switch, switch #1, should be
turned off.

I have edited the message to take out the unnecessary headers, etc. What
follows is the complete text.

Message begins: (part 1/3) I sent the following message to Bob Berry, author of
CSHOW, in response to a question he had posted on another message base about
problems with a Tandy 1000 and VGA graphics.

I had responded once to the message you had left in the Tandy message area about
CSHOW with VGA cards on a Tandy 1000. At the time I told you that I had to
force VGA with the +V option switch. Since then, I have found a fix for this
problem. It seems that there is a bug in the Tandy BIOS. I ran into an article
that told what was wrong and a very simple fix for it. The following is
extracted from an article in the magazine ONE THOUSAND.

Magazine: ONE THOUSAND (volume 4, number 7, December 1989)

   Title: The ATI VGA Edge

[...] KNOWN INCOMPATIBILITY
Due to the bug in the Tandy 1000's BIOS, the VGA Edge suffered from the
same VGA auto select problem that other VGA boards have. This means that some
programs will insist that the VGA Edge is an EGA board. The fix for that bug
was given in the VGA Wonder Review. In case you missed that issue, here is the
way to overcome the bug:

part 2/3

The fix to the problem is to change the value of the byte at 0000:048A
from 3F to the correct value. The correct values are listed in Table #3. Until
Tandy comes up with a fix to their BIOS, th following program written by ATI
will solve the problem:
Using DEBUG.COM from you Disk Operating System, type the instructions in
Figure #4 to create a short executable file called T1KVGA.COM. Put the value
from Table #3 that matches the set up of your computer in where the "__" is
shown. For almost all users, the value will be "0B".
Run this program every time you boot the computer and want to use
software that auto-detects your VGA card.

I typed this in and substituted the 0B for the "__" in the listing. This fixed

No, that's not the problem I was having. I've got a couple of games that look
to the BIOS and when they see Tandy, they default to CGA. I left another
message for you regarding the BIOS fix, sorry but I forgot the message number.
This fix has worked for everything except these two games. The problem is, they
look for Tandy and assume it is going to be the enhanced Tandy Graphics. I have
calls in to both companies involved to see if there is an update to the programs

How many controller Cards are you currently using for the Two Drives? One or
two? Each Controller Card can support up to two drives. Is your External
HardDrive attached to your internal HardCard by Cables? I need to know a little
more about your exact configuration to be able to tell you more about your
options. If you already have two Controller Cards in the Machine, then you can
add an additional Hard Drive to each Card which would put you up to 4 Hard
Drives total. Chow Fer Now..Jax...

Lois & Paul,
Depending on the Card Type, you should be able to Add any size Drive
to it that is compatible (In other words, Your Size Limit is set by the
Controller Cards themselves.) In order to know what the maximum size limit is
for your cards I'd need to know the Make and Serial Number of each card. As for
Limits to the amount of Drives that you add, there is a power supply limit in
both your computer and your external Hard Drive casing. The higher the Meg you
add the more power it's likely to take. You'll need to know how much power the
new drive takes as well as how much power is still available to you through both
the Main power supply in the computer and the power supply in the External
Chassis. My reccommendation would be for you to call a mail order House that
specializes in Hard Drives for the Tandy and give them the specifics of your
system along with what you want. Pick up a copy of PCM Magazine and look at the
adds for both "MegaHous" and "Micro Systems". There are a few others, but those
are the two places that I got my two different Drives from. Chow Fer

Most controller cards will handle 2 hard drives, Lois. Your present
configuration (if I understand correctly) is one hard card and one controller
for the external drive. Your best bet is to get another external and let the
external controller card handle it. You should find that the external controller
has two sets of unused pins - one right next to the data cable (for the present
external) and one right next to the (small ribbon cable) controller cable. By
getting the ribbon cables for these unused connectors on the controller, you can
run them to the "new" external drive.

Keep in mind that you will have to sort through the logical drive designations.
That is, your hard card may now be C: drive, while your larger drive is most
likely partitioned as D: and E: (DOS 3.3 32 meg limit, if you have DOS 4.0,
this is no longer limited).

You are already using it automatically. What the 128k chip does is free up
memory that is normally used for video. Now you 'really' have the full 640k

             . . . in MS-DOS 3.3. Frankly, I can see no improvement in speed
whatever. Or am I looking in the wrong place? Anyone got the scoop on this?

If fastopen is merely saving split seconds, I'll do without it. Some programs
such as SpinRite warn you to disable it when they're running, anyway.

I used FASTOPEN C:=90, but moving between programs seems to take just as long.
Where is the time savings evident?

Some of the restrictions on using fastopen break me up: "it cannot be the guest
disk drive in a JOIN operation," and it should not be "the redirected disk drive
in an assign command." Well, certainly not, and, no, I did not fall into the
trap of using it on "an alias disk drive used with SUBST." At least, if I did, I
didn't do it on purpose!

The reason I can use tm in my EX is because I built my own expansion slots so I

Either use 150 OR 120. I guess I just got lucky. There's no reason you couldn't

The board does not support "expanded" memory, of course, it does support
"extended". The speed of the DRAM chips depends on the ones currently in the
5150 - that is, unless you plan to replace "all" the DRAM's - then

you could go to the 120ns.

Although you don't see it -- the 128K upgrade gave you "more memory". The TX
"steals" 128K for video at boot. That means that you would effectively have only
512K, in a 640K system. You now have the full complement of 640K for use on your
system - as the additional 128K is now taken for the video array.

I have a CM-11 too. I am afraid you are stuck with CGA resolution. That is a
very good CGA monitor, but that is all it is. It does not have the horizontal
scan capability, nor the extra color info pins on the cable for EGA or higher
resolution video modes. It would take a major hardware re-work to up grade it.
Having used mine for about 2 years, I find that I need (desire?) a higher
resolution video display. I am considering going the VGA route with a good
multisync monitor. It is expensive, so I am only "considering" it until I win

     Tandy TX & VGA
     From: WILLIAMM To: ALL

I recently installed the Paradise VGA Plus card in my TX and everything
appeared to be doing fine, that is until I ran the System Information
Check found in the Norton Utilities. It stated that I am using an EGA
adapter, not a VGA. I then downloaded a Paradise VGA Demo off one of the
local boards and it would not run, the program halted and said I need
a specific video adapter. I have heard of a bug in the Tandy 1000 series
Bios that prevents VGA from working properly and I have also seen and
tried to use a short patch for the bios, written with debug. The patch
does not seem to be functioning properly. I am not that well versed
using debug so I would appreciate any help that someone may have to offer
as the correct way to use the patch or if Tandy has come out with a fix.

The patch is as follows:

c: debug
e 100
b8 00 00 8e d8 b0 0b 3e a2 8a 04 b8 00 4c cd 21
rcx
0010
nt1kvga.com
w
q

My problem lies in the address, I can't seem to be able to use debug properly
to correct my problem. (ok I admit it, debug is my downfall) The fix that
I am trying to obtain is the value of the byte at 0000:048A from 3f to the
value 0b as in the line above.

I hope someone is able to help.

The best upgrade for video is to move to a VGA video driver and monitor. There
is a software package available - but, I not sure it will work with Tandy
machines (I believe that the software takes up too much memory and interfers
with certain programs - as it is memory resident).

RE: Tandy TX & VGA (Re: Msg 15997)
     From: GREGL To: WILLIAMM

Bill,

There are actually *two* bugs that are biting you, per se. The first is a
problem in the BIOS of the Tandy 1000 which doesn't update the value at
0040:008A (0000:048A is the same address). As per your guess, that value stored
there should be $0B for a VGA color monitor and not $3F. There is a simple fix
without using the .COM program.
From the DOS prompt type DEBUG and press ENTER. When you see the hyphen type
E 0040:008A and press ENTER. You'll see the current value stored at that
address, 3F. Type 0B and press ENTER. Back at the hyphen prompt press Q and
ENTER to exit DEBUG. The .COM program is easier if you do it all the time but
the above is sufficient for every once in a while usage.
The second problem is in the BIOS of the Paradise VGA Plus card. The problem
above in the Tandy 1000 BIOS will actually not be noticable 90% of the time. In
order to fix this problem you will need to run the VGA BIOS out of RAM via the
RAMBIOS.SYS device driver or burn a new EPROM with the patch installed. This one
effects several programs, including Splash! slideshow and WordPerfect 5.x screen
preview. Both will report a VGA card is required even though you, obviously,
have one installed.

Notes:

To find the offset for your system, include the line DEVICE=RAMBIOS.SYS in the
CONFIG.SYS file and then take notice of the segment and offset values for INT
6Dh. For Tandy MS-DOS 3.20.22 this will be 0977:074B and for IBM PC-DOS 4.00
this will be 0B09:074B. Ignore the offset, the segment is all that we are after.
For the orignal VGA BIOS you will change the four bytes at this segment:5130 to
BB081490. If you have upgraded to version 8.05 of the VGA BIOS then change the
segment:4FC3 to B308B708.

The version 8.05 fix is the simplest since it involves changing two MOV
instructions into the BL and BH registers with direct data. If you use the (U)
nassemble instruction you should see:

    MOV BL,FF
    MOV BH,FF

For some unknown reason, Western Digital Imaging (Paradise) chose to inform
applications that it has no idea what type of monitor and video card is being
used in the system. Unfortunately, this can drive some applications bananas. For
example, the slideshow program distributed with Splash! refuses to run without
this patch and both Turbo C and Turbo Debugger refuse to go into either 43 or 50
line modes without this patch. Western Digital Imaging says that they do not
"support" the 50 line VGA mode. That's a contradiction of terms, in my opinion,
since the Paradise VGA Plus card does, indeed, work perfectly in the 50 line
mode with this patch installed. They also have a money back guarantee if you
find an application that won't run on the VGA Plus card that will run on an IBM
PS/2 system. Obviously, Splash! is such an instance where it runs perfectly on
an IBM PS/2 but not on a VGA Plus card without this patch. It makes me wonder if
they have their heads in the clouds, perhaps smoking some left hand cigarettes.

Larry,

I have received two ROM upgrades from Paradise in addition to taking a peek
at the BIOS included in the Tandy VGA adapter. All versions that I've seen have
the blasted bug in it for whatever reason. I've talked to Western Digital
Imaging on numerous occasaions with no results whatsoever. They just act like
I'm some kind of blithering idiot. I just noticed the text I sent up with that
patch is a very old file and doesn't include the patch for the Tandy VGA card as
well as being very difficult to understand.
As a matter of fact, Western Digital Imaging has sent me two ROM upgrades
for the latest version BIOS and both have been failures. The first one was
completely blank as if they never burned it. The second one had pieces missing
throughout which was probably caused by a rushed job and not allowing it to burn
long enough. I did get enough out of that last version to tell that it has the
bug as well. I've pretty much given up hope of Western Digital Imaging ever
getting it right.
I'm working on new docs at the moment for applying that patch that should be
easier to understand and will upload it ASAP. The problem you are going to run
into with the Tandy VGA card is that they don't supply the Utility disks, either
of the two I believe. That means you don't get the Windows drivers, RAMBIOS.SYS
driver, etc. They may actually supply a single disk with the VGAPLUS.EXE
utility, but I don't think so. That probably means you'll have to burn a new
EPROM with the patch installed which can be done by using debug to write the
EPROM to disk, patching the file, and then sending it to someone with an EPROM
programmer.

     The Wonderful World of PDQ
     From: MIKEBASIC To: ALL

I just wanted to send a note to all of you who use QuickBASIC to write utilities
and such. I just received (last week) a copy of Crescent Software's PDQ, an
addon (actually REPLACEMENT) library for QuickBASIC. I spent my entire spring
break writing utilities that were from 900 BYTE .COM files, to no larger than
4K! As one who really uses QuickBASIC and thinks that it IS a powerful language
PDQ is #1! I wrote a clone of Norton's SA (screen attribute) color setting
utility. It does exactly the same thing as his SA.COM: uses the same syntax,
but DOESN'T clear the screen each time it is called. Anyway, my program was
actually SMALLER than Norton's -- and his was written in 'C'. If you're a
QuickBASIC programmer who's thinking about porting over to C (but you really
don't want to), I suggest PDQ. It's $99 (which is a lot of Big Macs for a guy
like me in college), but I assure you that you'll be amazed! (The minimum
overhead was for me about 275 bytes. That is, when compiling a program that has
only the statement DEFINT A-Z, and then using a program that Crescent includes
called EXE2COM to stip the .EXE header, the smallest program you could write
would be about 275 bytes. That's less than ANY C compiler I've heard of). PDQ
is a great investment, really. Hey, if you get a copy, tell 'em that Mike Welch
told you about it on Delphi (not that it REALLY matters, Their address/phone is:

Again, thanks Greg. I'll look forward to your patch. I did not purchase the
Tandy card. I bought the Paradise VGA Plus card. It came with two 5.25" disks
with all kinds of utilities. Included were RAMBIOS.SYS, with a size of 35166
dated 4/13/88, and RAMBIOS.EXE, size 33503 dated 3/15/88. The directions for
using them were as clear as mud. I would think that these are written for the
Big Blue and will lock up a Tandy (if experience holds true).

If you have not - turn switch #1 on the motherboard to off. This will shut down

BASIC is BASIC and it's all slow and sloppy. P.D.Q. is great. I hope many of

     tl/2 Complete Fax
     From: MROGERS To: ALL

Well, after much head scratching we finally got the Complete Fax board to
operate and here's the story:

We got a new board and lo and behold it didn't work
either. Several calls to Complete PC and Tandy failed
to produce anything. We took the board to a Radio Shack
store where the manager let us try it in a TX with a 20
Meg hardcard. To our amazement it worked!!. We then
disconnected the IDE Smartdrive in my friend's TL/2
and plug the 20Meg Hardcard in. Once again the board
worked!. We reconnected the Smartdrive and the board
would not work!?!. We then ran the "MODE SLOW" command
and the board worked with the IDE drive. Tandy claims
there are no differences in the operation of the two
drives. Why would the board work at 8MHz with the
25-1032E hardcard but not with the IDE Smart Drive?

Tandy said it would be willing to test the board provided we sent it to them
along with the software, but I have reservations about sending a $700 part to Ft
Worth for experimentation.

As before, your thoughts, comments, assistance in general, have been and will
continue to be appreciated.

If you have two serial ports - one should be configured (on the serial board) as
COM1 and the other as COM2. Perhaps you have two boards set up as COM1.

To switch a serial board for use as COM2 is usually just moving a jumper or
setting a dip switch. If you received one - look at the booklet that came with
the serial board.

     T1000sx memory board
     From: DABBER To: ALL

Looking at the Tandy 1000sx technical manual 25-1511, under the section of
the DMA chip on page 2 it shows 4 options for memory organization.

Option 1. Bank 0 64k x 8
                Bank 1 64k x 8
                Bank 2 Empty

Option 2. Bank 0 256k x 8
                Bank 1 Empty
                Bank 2 Empty

Option 3 Bank 0 256k x 8
                Bank 1 256k x 8
                Bank 2 Empty

Option 4 Bank 0 64k x 8
                Bank 1 64k x 8
                Bank 2 256k x 8

I assume that since this unit came with 384k that it came with option 4. If
I should switch it to option 1 by pulling the 256k chips, and jumper (not
software) an EMS 4.0 board to backfill down to 128k, would anyone care to give
me odds on whether my machine will pass the boot up memory test? Are these
boards automatically recognized on boot?

The 1000sx apparently needs at least 384k on start up-128k for the video
controller which normally keeps 16k or 32k for itself and passes the rest on to
the cpu, and 256k for the rest of the system. Do you think the 128k I would
leave on the motherboard would supply the video board which would then look for
the rest? I'd really like to know the odds of this working in advance, since I
REALLY don't like to mess with memory chips, sending stuff back, etc.

This is really bugging me, as you can probably tell by now. Any theories out
there?

I appologize for posting this message in the compatible forum also, but this
is driving me crazy!

I just recieved a Northgate OmniKey/PLUS keyboard for my Tandy 1000SX.
I LOVE it. I already had Datadesk's Turbo 1000 101 keyboard but, it was
still mushier than I liked. I also had to lift "finger weights" every
night in order to press the keys.

It has a bank of 8 switches on it for compatibility with IBM XT, AT
Tandy 1000, Compaq, Amstrad, PS2, ATT-WGS, ATT6300/6300 Plus and, Novell.
Some of these machines, like the Tandy, also have a different cable which
is supplied at no extra cost. The feel is that of the IBM XT keyboard
but a little better.

NO ADAPTOR IS NEEDED!!!

It has an F13 key that toggles the "," and the "." so that if you're
holding the shift key down, those characters or printed instead of the
"<" and ">" keys. The F14 key allows the setting of the key repeat rate.

Soooo, we Do have another alternative besides the Tandy keyboard which
needs that silly adaptor and, the Datadesk product.

It comes with a 3 year unconditional warranty and, you can return it
within 10 days of purchase for a "no questions asked" refund less the
shipping charges.

Can't help you with the Tymnet problem, but the diskcopy - yes.

To make a working backup, go to the drive with the DOS disk. Type SYS B: (
assuming the non-DOS disk is in drive B:) That will move system files (the
hidden ones) on to the new disk. Then just COPY the rest of the files over and
you'll be all set.

Another way to do it is, if you have PCTools or Norton's Utilities, you can un-
hid the 2 hidden files, copy them over with the rest of the files via the COPY
command and then re-hide the files.

Larry,

RAMBIOS.SYS works fine on my Tandy 1000 TX but you are right about
RAMBIOS.EXE, it does lock up the computer. The two are the same function wise
(copy the VGA BIOS to RAM) except one is a device driver and the other is a
memory-resident program. The device driver is the better of the two anyway as it
eats less memory and is more well behaved. Well, it doesn't lock up the computer

The Telnet scrambles is sent at 300 baud. The system automaticaly detects ( I
am assuming this) the baud rate that you are using. If you log on at a higher
rate just answer normaly when you see the scramble writing and your screen will
look normal.

The SYS B: won't work as the system on the Utilities diskette is different than
the one on his system. The other way might work if after the files are unhid,
unsystemed and, un-readonlyed, he copies IBMDOS and IBMBIO first in their
proper order. DOS looks for the 2 files to be in the first 2 clusters. I
forget which one comes first. Then he probably could copy COMMAND.COM over
and the rest of the files.

I'll try it when I log off.

I guess that I am a little confused as to why you would want to reduce the "base
memory" and add expanded, Jack.

All you need to do is add 8 256K chips to the motherboard and then remove
jumpers E1 and E2 - to obtain 640K of base memory. You could then add the
expanded memory board with 256k to 1 meg onboard.

Am I missing the point here?

1> You are correct you can't DISKCOPY from a 1.44 to a 360K floppie. This due to
the way the diskettes are formatted. You can DISKCOPY using "one drive",
however. Let us assume that the 360K is A: drive and the 1.44 is B: drive. To
copy as 360K, you would type:

DISKCOPY A: A:{enter}

This will then prompt you for the "source diskette", which it will copy to
memory. It will the ask for the "destination diskette", which it will transfer
the information in memory (copied from the source diskette) to the destination
diskette. Depending on how much free memory you have and the density (capacity)
of the diskette, you may have to "switch" the source and destination diskettes
several times - you are prompted (by DOS) through the whole process.

2> You must be sure that your Telecom software is actually set up for 1200 bps,
prior to dialing your local access number. If you are using a dialing directory
and it says that it will dial at 1200 bps, it may not! Check your default
setting - this should be set when you "install" the Telecom software.

On Telenet you answer the CONNECT with {Enter}D{Enter} (no spaces and an
uppercase "D"). You answer TERMINAL= with D1{Enter}.

On Tymnet you answer CONNECT with A{Enter} (uppercase "A") and TERMINAL= with
{Enter}. (Tymnet will recognize that you are logging in at 1200 bps
automatically - by what your modem is set to when you call).

came with his system? I admit I'm not t terribly 'up' on Tandy 4000's, but
doens't that strike anyone as kinda weird? I'd say "pick one" and use it as the
system files of choice, do a SYS B: and continue on from there. It shouldn't
make any difference which one he uses as long as there are system files on the
disk. A different type of system files are not going to work with a current set

enough for an 85k second app. or window.

The only way to get a bigger second window is to have a hardware LIM 4.0
EMS board and let it "backfill" some of the main (640k) memory. In other words,
if I could disable down to 128k, I would be able to run a 600k first window, and
a 512k second window (640-128)! This, at least in theory, is what would happen
on a PC compatible that allows disabling down that far.

Now we come to the Tandy 100sx. I have come to the conclusion after
reading the tech manual (as little as I could understand of it) that I would
only be able to backfill to 384k, IF THEN!

On boot, the 128k for the video adapter kicks in, then the the 256k for
the DMA. Then the video adapter does some remapping of its memory allocation, I
think from low to high memory. This could really mess things up as far as using
EMS to backfill below 640k. At least on some of the other 1000's, they can get
the video adapter out of this game by means of a 128k addition, but the sx just
doesn't have this option. Oh well, the perfect excuse to get VGA, right? (except
all my kids' software uses 320x200x16!)

Oh well, I think I'll try it on a 30 day trial basis any- way, and just
yank chips and set dip switches and then hope I can just get the system back
together the way it was if it doesn't work. I just can't believe I actually
found an EMS 4.0 hardware board that will actually fit this #$%@* box, and then
find out it might not work the way it should (or maybe I should say- I'm calmed
down now- the way I want it to)!

Anyway Mike, thanks for your interest. Believe me, almost everyone I
asked about how low I could disable the memory asked me why in the world I would
want to.

His normal system disk has IBMDOS and IBMBIO.COM. He has a diagnostic diskette
that has a different operating system on it. Hence, IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS or
whatever. The SYS command will work with his DOS disk but will only put
that version on. He can't use that command with his other disk as it's not
a DOS disk but merely a bootable disk under a different operating system.

The thing with Norton doesn't work either. If you unhide the files and re-hide
them, the disk won't boot up as there's no boot record on the disk.

If you choose the option "Leave room for System", it puts the hidden files
on the floppy. You could then at a later date copy COMMAND.COM over but,
it puts the hidden files of the system which was used for boot up.

I think that unless he knows and finds out what version operating system is
on the diagnostic disk and gets it, he's out of luck.

I think that you may be trying to overtax the SX. While Desqview is an great
program - it belongs on a 286 machine, at minimum.

The "greater" truth about mulitasking is that very few people need to "actually"
run a background process. They do need to "switch" between programs, however.
Have you ever thought about trying Software Carousel or Double DOS? These will
not perform background tasking, but they do an excellent job of "swapping".
Software Carousel is an excellent piece of work. Perhaps you might be happy with
something of this nature, as it handles the "swap" process using virtual "disk"
memory if necessary.

  If you're a Tandy junkie like me . . .

. . . you might want to drop in and get the new Tandy computer
catalog, RSC-21A. It is very similar to RSC-21, but has a few new machine
entries, such as the 4033 LX, the 4016 DX, the 2500 XL and the 1000 SL/2.

Also, the 3000 NL is missing, though the 1000 HX is still there. Yes, the
Color Computer 3 is still there, as is the Model 4-D and the Model 102.

I guess this catalog is the debut for the 1100 FD and the 2800 HD laptops, but
I thought I'd seen them before; guess it was just in magazine articles or
  separate flyers.

Anyway, if you want to see what else is new, or gone, get yourself a copy. The
newest edition is RSC-21A and the front and back covers look almost identical
to the previous one, RSC-21. I did note that the back cover now says "Radio
Shack, America's Technology Store," whereas the older catalog said "Radio
Shack, A Division of Tandy Corporation."

8/16 bit EMS 4.0 hardware- but I am having a heck of a time installing the
darned thing.

I tried to install the invisible EMS board today, but got two symptoms.

                1. Floppy light comes on and stays on.
                   No video
                   No 384k on screen.
                   Boot goes no further.

                             or

                2. By moving the top of the board over
a little I can get the machine to
get to iemsemm, but it gives the
                   error message "Hardware mapping register
                   failed test"

These symptoms regardless of port address.

By the way, I set the jumper to disable the extra 256k to bring the motherboard
ram to 384k. Tried booting with and without backfill jumpered.

I have run out of ideas.

I just knew it would be too good to be true! I even played it safe and only
disabled to 384k. If this had worked, I might have tried to get down to 256 or
128, who knows.

Wish me luck,

Jim:

Sorry for the delay in a concrete response but I just finished the add- tion
I was involved with, and finally sat down to play. Well, some how I have
managed to jump out of the frying pan, bypassing the fire, and right into total
spontaneous combustion. In reviewing your suggestions I was all set to reset my
IRQ's and stumbled across the manual, hidden in a moving box, and found out that
in my version of the Scanman handscanner, mine does NOT use ANY interrupts.?!
Apparently I have one of the original ( early ) versions of the hand scanner.

By the way this is not scanman plus, just scanman. Anyway, I was bold enough to
change the DMA channel from #1 to #3. Reconfigure the software setup, and lo
and behold - music from the sound.pgm from w/in deskmate. My ears nearly fell
off.

I didn't have to have the printer on, on line or anything. Well one quick check
on the scanner and I can screw shut the PC lid. Obviously the scanner wouldn't
work! No be deal, I've been w/ out the sound program so long I was use to not
having it. Just change the jumpers to thier original position, and I'm in
scannerville again, right? Dead wrong! The scanner has ceased to function. The
red light comes on in the scan window ( means that it's working according to a
test you can run ), I scan the picture and total white blank space. It's as
though no image is recorded, or at least transferred to the PC. I tried every
conceivable combo available - nothing, I deleted my autoexec.bat file, disabled
all resident program, killed the config.sys. Nothing works. I even got out the
old trust volt meter, ran a continuity test on all wires in the hand scanner
cord, all come up OK. So I am a firm beliver in throwing this thing ( the
scanner ) out the window, and starting over.

By the way, I even called the Logitech hotline about this problem. Their
response is " Well, the scanner works in some T1000's but no all. Has something
to do with the motherboard." However we were both at a lost since this
particular board did work before. " The tech didn't know why, made suggest
tions I already tried, ( but at least concerned and helpful ), then finally told
me that Tandy has been no help with this problem. Apparently Logitech knows of
this problem with the tandy's, tried to get some help from Big Beige, and Tandy
has brushed them off. Anyway, I'm going to try this board in a computer in the
office and see if it works. If it does, I'll hang myself, and if not I'll
accept the fact that the board has died an untimely death. Thanks for the ear,
and if I stumble upon something , I'll drop you a line. Thanks again

I find that I can't use my Word Perfect 5.0 with the new mouse. I suppose
I'll have problems with other word-processors too. My SX is pretty old,
bought way back in the fall of '86. I didn't have the mouse drivers on

I should say that the mouse works just fine with games, does NOT work with
my old Deskmate but I feel that it'll probably work if I borrowed my

What it gets down to is this...who supplies the wherewithall to get my
mouse working within these word-processors, etc. Radio Shack? Word-
Perfect, et al? (I've heard that Word Perfect 5.1 comes "mouse-compatible".)

Any info and instructions (please...be explicit. I'm pretty ignorant on
this topic) would be MOST appreciated!

RE: Genius mouse & scanner (Re: Msg 16088)
     From: OTOM To: BJ85 (NR)

Bob,

It seems like many of us are fighting the battle of the IRQ's. In my note the
other day... I listed the IRQ's that Tandy support listed for the 1000sx. and
they were right on. When two items are set to the same interupt, either 1 or
both do not work. My listed solution worked...(1) I removed the internal modem,
(2) set up serial board for COM1 (westerrn digital... a story all by itself), (
3) set the scan board AND driver to COM2 and WOW.........it works.

I now have a working (GENIUS) mouse and scanner, & yes BOB it works nice, once
I got the correct combination of printer/scanner/resolution settings. There's
more choices than a salad bar.
ALAS my poor 1200 modem is looking for a new home & NOW I KNOW why many
recommend an external modem.
   USING my RS-232 interface selector, I can now choose; 1-mouse, 2-Model 100,
3-1400lt. NOW TO save up again ... what's next... either an external modem or a
LAP LINK program?

There are several public domain/shareware utilities that add mouse functions to
some of your software --- but if it wasn't written for it in the first place,
like WordPerfect 5.1, these utilities are kluges at best! Spend the money and
upgrade to WordPerfect 5.1 or Microsoft Word 5.0 if you want really good mouse
support in a DOS-based word processor.

     EMS 4.0 board
     From: DABBER To: ALL

This is to let anyone interested in this subject know how I am progressing so
far. I finally got the Invisible EMS board physically installed in my Tandy
1000sx the other night. I temporarily pulled the hard disk controller so I could
see what I was doing, and it went right in. The screw hole doesn't line up, so
I'll use that as an excuse for my previous problems.

I am pleased with this board. It is a true HARDWARE 4.0 EMS board, at least as
far as I know it.

I think it might work in OTHER 1000's better than in the sx. Actually, I think
it might work better in an sx with another video card (VGA or EGA).

Here is my SWAG as to what's going on in this thing.
        1. By means(sp.?) of a jumper you tell it whether it has
384 or 640k. The video adapter then sets up 16k for itself
at the 370 or 624 mark. Therefore, if you wanted to disable
down as low as you could, you can only disable down to 384
(128 goes to video adapter and then to cpu, 256 goes to
the DMA chip otherwise the cpu would have to handle all
I/O calls etc).BUT there's the Tandy gotcha. The backfill
should be CONTINUOUS! The 16k video at 370-384k stops this.
IOW, when jumpered at 384, that is exactly what you and DOS
           will get!
When jumpered to 640k, you can backfill, but you can't get
the extra up to 7??k, again because because it must be con-
tinuous. Right now I am backfilling to 384. I have it jumpered
           at 640, AND I have 640 installed! I don't think I want to trust
any important data to that particular memory area. When I pulled
the chips that take care of 385-640, and left the jumper OFF,
(telling it to expect 640) and backfilling, I got a lot of
memory errors, as you would expect.

        2. My 286 express card (or something) must set up some kind of
space at E400, because the EMS card just didn't like it, or
more likely it checks for a 286 cpu and expects some ROM to
           be there.

        3. XMS memory isn't possible with the express card, since it
boots up on the 8088 (expected, but hey you know I tried!).

All in all, the card itself performs like a champ. I loaded about 30k worth of
drivers into the A000-FFFF region. It definitely is capable of enhanced EMS.
BTW, don't buy QRAM for this card, because you won't need it. It comes with it's
own version of LOADHI (com. and sys.) and I don't think any of you would like
the performance penalties you get with files and buffers in the upper memory.

I said upper memory for a reason. Quartedeck and Invisible seem to agree on some
things and not on others. Desqview definitely sees the board. It's been a lot of
fun playing with it, going from one program to another. In playing with it under
the many configurations, I've had some horrendous crashes (why? take your pick
of 3 or 4 reasons). I tend to think maybe my 8k cache (for the 286 card) gets
overwritten every once and a while. Anyone out there surprised? Anyway what one
company calls shadow ram, the other calls something different, but both use for
the same thing (filling in A000-FFFF with RAM and then putting TSR's and drivers
there), but neither one will recognize it if made by the other's program.

My verdict- Good Board-Just what I was looking for. Doesn't work well with MY
system. Might work even for me if I had VGA or a board with it's own memory.
Might work for other 1000's that have the video disabled. Got a good workout
inside the box, pulled a few things out, put them back in-tried not to sweat on
those 256k chips-found out how valuable a set of tweezers can be. BTW, the chip
extactor/installer doesn't work so good on re-installing chips since the pins
have already been bent in once, so it won't hold onto them. Had fun with x= i=
/r etc.

DABBER P.S. I have no idea if the last few lines
are going to make it.

P.P.S. (REGGIE) NOW I know why you hated express.sys. That was one of the very
first things that had go go. I miss my hot keys, tho.
