I think I may have figured out my problem but thanks for the reply. I am
logging on with Tymnet but I was using what I think is a really cheap modem. I
am writing this on my friends 1000 TL/2 and Intel 24oo bps modem. I will return
my existing modem and make the investment in this one on Monday. If the Intel
doesn't work on my machine then I am going to investigate with the phone company
to see if I have a"dirty" line. Thanks for the reply, I will let you know next
week how I am doing.

     From: BUBBLEMAN To: PFNSTRE

Well, the 1000 HX is an improvement over the EX with DOS in ROM and 720k drives
and it's supposed to be a hair faster, but without the expansion box you're
still in the same boat you've always been. With the box, you can use about three
industry standard boards, and it has drive bays built-in. If you have to spend
more than $250.00 for the upgrade, consider buying a cheap clone. IBM clones
have 8 standard slots usually and a normal chasis. However, you lose built in
3-voice sound, graphics, and Tandy's well built (NOT WELL DESIGNED) systems.
CPD's number is 1-800-328-3387, ask for Chris Brownstead.

route myself, building a clone..

Another Thing I've noticed in CPD's last few adds is that they now say that
"Slots and more" is NOT for the EX & HX... either a typo or a change on their
part...

Other drives will work in the SL/2, but if you've put in a 5 1/4" drive,

the company Mike suggests is great. If you don't get PCM, I would highly

Thanks for the encouragement! I bought a Practical Peripherals 2400bps modem
today. I am now running at 2400 bps using 8 data bits, parity = none and 1 stop
bit. The only problem I seem to be having is in the PC databases. I have been
looking for some programs to practice downloading. When I go to read the program
as the screen scrolls I get nothing but crazy symbols. I am getting all of the
prompts and Delphi menus as I exit out, but they are not in words but in crazy
symbols. The only way I seem to be able to clear the screen is to leave delphi
and disconnect and then call back. Do you have any ideas? The modem is not
near the power suplly. It is also not touching any other boards and its included
diagnostic program indicates that it is sound. Thank you very much Mike any
help or logical explanation would be very much appreciated.

Your problem with the "crazy characters" most likely is the parity you have set.
If you are entering with Telenet, set your comm program to 8,N,1 -- on Tymnet to
7,E,1.

Hi there fellow Tandy 2000 owner! Yeah I also got one of those gems from the
shack.. mine had all the same equiptment with it plus a DMP-430 132 column
printer !! Everything works fine. I called to ask about upgrading the dos 2.11
to a later version and was sadly informed that we bought a tr dinosaur... it
can't be upgraded with any other dos..!! but for the price it was a real steal
for sure! By the way.. the drive inside the hard drive case is a Seagate ST-225
which is a rea 20 meg hard drive.. not the 10 meg they clai but their dos only
supports a 10 meg so half of it is really being wasted! The monitor with mine is
in excellent shape and I plan to buy a EGA card for my other IBM compatible to
use it with. Does anyone know if the monitor is a standard EGA type or will mods
have to be made? I am stll looking for software for it.. nothing in my area
(Pennsylvania) that I could find locally. Anyone else reading this have any
views? Can this be turned into a better machine somehow than it is right now? It
seems to me to have the potential with being an AT sorta compatible.. I have
upgraded mine with 64k chips (4164 at 150 nanosecond speed) to the full 512k
possible without adding a second memory board !! really nice.. Leave me your
views on this machine.. good or bad. If it turns out to be the worst case, I
still have all the great parts it supplied for use on another machine! heap
parts for any compatible!

     From: DJELFERT To: ALL

I recently purchased a TCS-100 tape backup system ( for a pretty good price I
might add ). Unfortunately, I have had some reliability problems with it. For
instance, suppose I store 4 or 5 zip files on a tape, each about 300k in length.
Upon restoring these to the hard drive, and un-zipping the files, several of the
zipped files will fail due to CRC ( or some other message ) errors. It seems
that the TCS drops a byte every 150k or so. My question: Is this reliability
rate normal for tape backup systems 2) for TCS-100? 3) Is this abnormal. and/or
any suggestions on how to proceed?

I have ruled out the tape ( I bought a new one ), tension, and existing data on
the tape as possible problems.

Also, has anyone managed to use any other software package for their TCS-100
other than the supplied one? ( ie. PC Tools )..

Thanks in advance Dennis Elfert

RE: T2000's Cheap! (Re: Msg 17543)
     From: THESTRANGER To: SKYLINE

Ok...found the info. There are 2 switches to HFORMAT that you will find useful.

/B will prompt you for Head & CYL's to lock out if you have an error map for the
drive.

/P will prompt you for Number of Heads & Number of CYL's etc. Without this
switch, a 10 Meg drive is assumed. If you don't know the number of CYL's and
Heads for your Seagate drive, there's a file in the Utilities topic of the PC
databases entitled "LISTING OF SEAGATE DRIVES" that was submitted to the
database by me, you'll find the info you need there.

Couple of words of warning...you probably know this already, but if you don't
have DOS on a disk, make sure you make a bootable disk before reformatting.

Although the /S and /V switches are valid for HFORMAT, don't format a system
hard drive with the /S/V switches together, there's a bug in HFORMAT that will
cause the drive to become non-bootable after the volume label is set. You can
set one after the format, but not during. Well, that should get you going, good
luck, and let me know if you have any more questions.

     interleave and 286express
     From: GLENTZ To: ALL

Just thought I'd post this to see what kind of response. Recently installed 65M
HD on my 1000sx running with VGA/286express/serial-parellel bd. Started playing
around with interleave factor. Manual suggested 3 or 4 to 1. Drive didn't work
to well, called some friends found out stock t1000sx should be 5:1 but with 286
card have to go to 6:1!!! Seems 286 express card causes additional wait state.
Tried these ratios with respective processors running and confirmed this info.
Pissed me off though. Just another Tandy Gotcha! So I left it at 6:1 because
286 bd is always on BIg news is I found a way to get the 286 bd and HD to
cooperate at 5:1 interleave. What I found was R L Young's QDRAM pgm in the
pc-sig util da.

This pgm changes the memory refresh rate so the computer doesn't spend as much
time refreshing the memory and can spend more time processing data. After
running the pgm Norton SI (V4.5) said I was at 6.7 cpu speed vs 6.4 b4 running
QDRAM. For the heck of it I reformated my drive(I really could have used
Spinrite or Norton 5.0 here) at 5:1 and checked norton si. With specifyingC
drive it told me 6.7 cpu, 1.6 disk speed and 5.0 overall!!

Just for the heck of it again, I reformated to 4:1 interleave. This time n-SI [
1.8 HD speed and associated overall(I don't remember). So it seems that the
stock 1000sx may work at Interleave of 4:1 if the QDRAM pgm is used.

IN SUMMARY
Interleave: 5:1 if 8088 based with no changes in memory refresh.
 4:1 " " " " using qdram
            6:1 if using 286express card/no enhancements
            5:1 " " " " /Use Qdram

Few other notes: I'm using DOS 3.20.22 and an NEC V-20 processor for when I'm
in 8088 mode(Hardly ever but I bought it almost same day I bought computer -12
/86).

QDRAM pgm docs says to be careful on t1000's I'm not sure why unless the pgm is
fooled by the computer when it does it's calculation on the optimal refresh
rate.

Maybe RLYOUNG could help out on this question.

Overall I'm still disappointed that the 286 card puts in another wait state or
two but at least the HD is running as good as it could in a plain jane 1000sx
with no enhancements.

ANY COMMENTS??!!

You don't say if you are trying for an internal or external... makes a
difference... In either case, the drive itself won't get power via the ribbon
cable... in the tandy externals there is a circuit board that translates the
oddball configuration from the computer to one the drive can use... tandy
external case and cable which I could let go quite cheap... contact me E-mail if
you're interested... As for adding a drive internally... I havn't a clue.

I run, as you know, an SX with the 286 card. I have a Seagate 251 ( 40 meg)

I don't use QDRAM and don't remember anything about it that you haven't

require. I'm Spinriting an XT at work tonight at 4:1.

     From: JAXOMSTEVE To: ALL

Hi all! I just found an Archive containing support files for the Tandy 2000.
I'll be uploading it tonight and pending Approval from the Database Managers it
should be available to all you new Tandy 2000 owners by the End of this week or
next. Let me know if they're helpful. I think there's also a possibility of
getting some Terminal Programs for the Tandy 2000, but will have to check into
it since they are currently listed as OFF-LINE on the BBS where I've seen them.
Chat at ya later...Jax...

Hi!

I just wanted to let you know that I've decided to drop my asking price on the
102 I've got advertised on your Classified section (ad #12, I believe). So if
you'd like to delete the old one please go ahead- I resubmitted the ad with the
new price so it should show up to take the old ad's place soon.

Thanks!

     T1000A printer port
     From: PHOPE To: ALL

Hi! I just logged back into forum & find that somehow half of my
 original
message (177556) was missing so here goes again!!

Can someone please help me with technical information on the Tandy 1000A
parallel printer port. I have just purchased a MicroSolutions 3.5", 1.4M
Backpack floppy drive that connects to the parallel port, forgetting (of
course)that the 1000A has a weird port.

Does anyone know about the Tandy adapter that will give a standard bi-
directional port on the 1000A that Tony Olive refers to in his review of the
Voice Master Key in the December 1990 issue of PCM Magazine, page 74 ["...the
Tandy 1000 does not have a standard parallel port (although you can buy an
adapter from Tandy)."]. The Tandy Computer Centre here in Winnipeg (Canada)
tells me that no such adapter exists.

I know I could buy a parallel port board but all three slots are full (20 Meg
hardcard, internal modem & memory "plus" board with a serial "plus" card). If
the card-edge parallel port cannot be made bi-directional where can I buy a
"plus" card for the memory board that will give me both a serial & a parallel
port?

Any other suggestions or ideas would be much appreciated. Being pretty handy
with a soldering iron etc. I can probably make my own mods or adapters if you
have suggestions.

Also can anyone tell me how to log onto DataPac (Canada) at 2400 baud

Thanks PHOPE

CompuAdd sells all kinds of centronic combination cables. I know for sure they
have Centronics Female with 25 pin male on the other end but, I'm not sure they
have them with 25 pin female ends. If they don't, you could get the female Cent.
with the 25 pin male and a 25 to 25 female to female rs-232 cable. Connect the
Centronics end to your Tandy cable, the other end to one end of the female to
female cable, and the floppy into it. You could also use a gender changer in
place of the female to female.

No pretty but it'll work!

     Internal Floppies on TX
     From: SMITHW To: ALL

I purchased a 1000Tx a couple of years ago. It came with 2 internal 720K
floppies. I have wanted to swap one of the drives for a 360K drive in order to
have both types. My problem is that I got a Tandon drive and attempted to swap
the B drive, as the A dri ve is not plug compatable. The drive works, but
responds as an A drive instead of B. I have tried messing with the jumpers on
the Tandon, but that dosen't help. Does anyone know how the drive are selected
on the Tx and how I might make the 320k drive work.

     Lockup w/ QB 4 & 80287
     From: BOBCAR To: ALL

I may or may not have a problem... I have an original Tandy 1000. Three
years ago I put in a 286 express board. Last week I installed a 80287
coprocessor in the express board. Since then, when running Quick Basic 4.0, the
machine locked up, requiring the big red button.
My question: Does QB 4 have a quirk with coprocessors or could I have a
quirky 80287?
I've ran a couple of programs that utilize the 287 and made up a quick and
dirty assembly program to try the 287 and they ran just fine.
   Any comments appreciated. Bob Carson

     From: SKYLINE To: ALL

Does anyone have the pinout for the Tandy 2000 parallel port? I am trying to
make a printer cable and can't seem to make the right connections to it. I have
the centronics connector for a ribbon cable, and the 34 pin header connector
also for a ribbon cable.. I know that Tandy printers have weird pinouts and am
trying to make this cable to go to a Tandy dmp-430 and a dmp-130a printer. Tandy
sells the right cable but at $30 I'd rather fabricate one myself !!

Any help such as point to point wiring would be helpful ! I have the printer

I still need the pinout for the 34 pin connector on the back of the 2000.. maybe
you could tell me from looking at yours what the connections are..and where is
pin 1. The cable I bought is 36 conductors wide and I have both the connectors
for the ends. I need to know what leads are switched around backwards or
whatever to make it work. I have a pinout and also a regular tandy printer cable
to work on my IBM here and made that by comparing the port lines with the
printer lines. That was obtained from the manuals for both pieces of equiptment.
All I have is the skimpy manual for the 2000 which is a real joke..they could
have typed a note and gotten away alot cheaper! If you can tell me what lines
are switched I'd appreciate it greatly... If anyone else has this info, please

The price for my cable must have been a lucky mistake - it came off the counter
system as #26-1323 12' ptr cbl 2-6000 price 5.05. I think I said $595 before,
just checked the sales slip. Oh well, I deserve a little luck sometimes.
Anyway, just looked at the thing - if you bought insulation-displacement type
connectors, you are in luck. NO twists or reversed pairs. The cable runs flat
from one end to the other and into the insulation-displacement connectors. Pin
one (colored stripe) is on the left end at the computer, and on the right at the
printer BOTH VIEWED FROM THE BACK. Just clamp those puppies on and away you go.
(If you got solder-type connectors, brew a pot of coffee and warm up the iron).

Good luck - John Wainwright

     From: BUBBLEMAN To: GESTEP

Hey, I think I know what your problem is. The 1000 HX will have no idea the
drive even exists untill you run the setuphx.com program on your DOS disk. There
is only one ribbon cable to plug into the drive. Mine I think was blue and
located under the drive bay housing. The HX has a chip inside called an EEPROM
which stores information on how the system is configured and how you want it to
operate upon boot-up. When you start SETUPHX.COM it will read the hardware
installed on your system and provide you with a menu of options. You will need
to run it every time you change your hardware configuration. I hope this drive
is internal, because adding an external 3 1/2 720k drive means there is no way
to put a 5 1/4 360k drive on the system without losing the external.

It's a memory card with the other things I mentioned. I don't use the memory
feature as I already have an EMS board. I got this card for nothing so it might
be considered overkill if you went and bought it for $100.00. It fit my needs
just right with the serial port and all. There are many cheap cards that have
clock, serial parallel and game on them in the $40-50 range. Most small computer

How did you get to 4:1 with a 286 card? I could only get 5:1 when the 286 card

increased performance at 4:1. I'm running an sx with v-20 and 286 cad and my

get some 34 conductor ribbbon cable.

Get a Centronics type, mass termination connector.

(All of these can be had at your local Radio Shack... while there, take a good
hard look at their $40 pronter cable for the 2000)

Then take your vise-grips and put the connectors on the cable exactly like the

And remember to label the top of the 34 pin connector!

Yes I got a printer in my deal.. It is a DMP-430 which originally sold for about
900 bucks ! It prints like a dream and I am so proud of it that I invited
friends over to examine the print quality it produces.. excellent.. of course it
has an 18 pin printhead..but it is a beautiful printer, albeit a tad large to

Tandy ever see how the compatability issue frustrates their customers. How does
the 386 line stack up compatible wise.I get depressed just reading about all the
problems. I also wonder if they just hope people won't read any other
advertisements for other computers, since the cheapest 386 in the '91 catalog is
$2999 (4016). It has no operating system (we all know you need a Tandy DOS) 1
meg ram, 1 3.5 drive and - and - a keyboard, wow.I can buy a Gateway system
(25mhz not 16 like the 4016) with more stuff than you want me to list.Whats
keeping them in business? Does the 386 line suffer with the same kind of

The price issue is a bad as ever, Ron. Tandy machines are typically more
expensive than those sold from mail order companies. However, there are places
like Computer Plus that offer substantial savings over the catalog prices.

The Tandy Service policy has been revamped -- I can personally vouch for this.
After recently contacting Ed Juge and chatting with Bill Bois (Regional Service
Director) about a Tandy 1400 LT problem, the newer policy was a very pleasant
surprise.

It did take going over the heads of my local R.S. Store Outlet, but once I got
to my "local" Service Center, it was all downhill. The response and satisfaction
I received was far above what I could have expected.

Tandy's new outlook toward the "individual" customer is going to encourage those
of us who have been so displeased in the past.

See that your current drive controller card can handle a "hard drive." If not
you will need another controller to handle this.

See that you have more than "2 drive bays" (if there are only 2, they are now

It would help if we knew what computer you wished to add the hard drive??

Does anyone know how to make a Tandy printer work with a non-Tandy

I have a DMP-130 that I'd like to use with my new laptop (a Sharp MZ-100).
When I connect them with a standard parallel cable, however, the printer won't
go online. I've tried rebooting, turning the machines off and on, etc., but the
printer won't go online until I UNPLUG the cable connecting it to my computer.
The same computer and cable work fine with my Panasonic KX-P1124 printer, so I
suspect the printer of wanting a non-standard interface.

THINK it was those ones. Sure is nice to see 707K available after loading DOS.

     From: GMORIN To: JAXOMSTEVE

JAX, still haven't printed out the manual yet huh?

On page 45 of the manual it says: Scroll Lock [Sccroll Lock]

When the back window is moved to the top of the screen, the cursor will either
stay at ( or 'lock' at) the previous position or move to the bottom of the back
scroll buffer.

If Scroll Lock is on, the cursor will stay at the previous position.

The [Scroll Lock] key can be pressed at any time to toggle this option. The item
'SLK' will be displayed on the stsaus line if this option is enabled.

Note: Turning on or off the LED light on the keyboard may cause data overrun in
some computers. Therefore, Telemate controls the status of the LED and switches
it only if the COM port is idle for a certain time. As a result, the LED may not
reflect the current status. You should check the 'SLK' item on the status line
instead.

17678 30DEC90-1330 General Information
     help
     From: JOHN_MRAZIK To: ALL

   I own a T1000 TL/2, with 20 Meg hard drive, 3 1/2" and 5 1/4" floppies, math
coprocessor, mouse, track ball, hand scanner and OCR, 768K RAM and 2400 baud
internal modem.

I have a couple of programs which require a Hercules Monochrome, EGA or VGA
graphics card. This is no problem, however, because I can switch the output of
my 1000 TL/2 from CGA to Hercules through the SETUPTL2.COM and run the programs
on an old monochrome monitor I own. I have a batch file which uses a program to
insert keystrokes (FAKEY) to take SETUPTL2 into a monochrome mode and then
automatically reboot.

Alas, the FAKEY program cannot reproduce the finger cramp inducing <CTRL>
<ALT> <SHIFT> <V> combination that the TL/2 owners manual (if you can call that
inadequate pamphlet a manual) recommends for a video mode change. Do you know of
any shareware program that could handle these multiple key macros?

Does the <CTRL> <ALT> <SHIFT> <V> command reprogram the EEPROM like the
SETUPTL2 program, and will this reprogramming (done about twice a week) shorten
the life of the EEPROM chip or damage it?

I have both of the monitors connected to the computer through an A B Data
Selector Switch. Publications I read tell me to power down the computer
whenever a card or cable is connected or disconnected to prevent internal
damage. Does this also apply to switching the monitors through the data switch?
This would involve parking the hard drive heads and doing a cold boot. A warm
boot would not give me the time to make the display change. This constant
energizing/de-energizing will surely do the TL/2 in before its time. Any
suggestions you could give in this area will be greatly appreciated. I really
don't want to spring for the VGA card and monitor just yet.

I also own a nice 80C86 (not a Tandy) laptop with a LCD screen and a CGA
card. The computer has a DB9F jack to use an external monitor. I would like to
use my extra monochrome monitor with the laptop when at home. See my problem?

Although there are many shareware programs out there that will simulate CGA
with a Hercules Graphic Card I have yet to find one that will work the other way
around. Is this ellusive program residing somewhere in my TL/2 or Deskmate
software or does the Tandy machine actually have two graphics cards? Have you
ever heard of such a program? If so, could you please direct me to it.

When using the Address/Telephone List functions of Deskmate 3 with my modem I
encounter this problem. My local telephone area will only handle pulse dialing.
Although I can change defaults for this in my communications software (Procomm),
and I can pulse dial in command mode to the modem, I cannot find a way to change
the tone dialing default of Deskmate.

One last question, I promise. The only flaw I can see in the TL/2 is its
miniature power supply (67 watts ?). Is there an after market upgrade that will
fit into the case? If not, how about an external unit. Can I adapt a larger
one electrically. I would need an external case and also expect this to void
the computer warranty. Although I'm not having a problem at the present, with
the peripherals I have and what I might want to add, I will have to make a
decision about expanding or upgrading. This seems a shame because I am quite
satisfied with my 1000.

Greg,
I figured as much. I just turn on scroll lock before starting Telemate now
and turn it off once I'm in the program. This "fixes" the problem well enough.
I just wish Telemate would read the current status of the scroll-lock and use it
instead of setting it itself. Kinda like a possesive wife taking control of your
computer. *Grin* (I'm not married, just kiddin!)

I can personally say that I'm happy with my TL. With tandy you get "little
things" like better sound, 16 color CGA, and built in VGA in the higher up
systems. Plus you get better service, help is always just a local phone call
away, no matter where you move (in the US) Plus, the Service plan is a great
deal. I had over $3000 in problems with my TL, but because of the TSP, it didn't
cost me a cent. And again, it was only a car ride down to RS to drop it off. No
packing it up and spending $20 to ship it all the way across the country, or
taking it to "Bob's computer repair shop" who'll probally just make the problem
worse, and take forever. Not to mention we have more magazines devoted to us in
peticular, than any other PC, and our own forum on Delphi.

I can't help with much, but perhaphs a little. 1st, the 67 watts will be
sufficient with whatever you add on, trust me. You don't wan't to void the
warenty. 2nd with a system like that it's worth the couple extra couple bucks a
month to switch your phone service to pulse. And also I had so many problems
with deskmate address book, I stoped using it. Also, it's not worth it running
mono on a CGA. I find it hard to believe a program is so imporant that it must
be used, in other words, if it don't work on your CGA, get a different program
that will. Also, it's worth the jump to VGA from a system like that, I making
that jump myself now. Just so you're aware, I have a TL with 2 3 1/2's, 1 5 1/4,
640K(to be raised soon) a 49 meg HD, a 2400 baud internal, to be arriving by the
end of the week, and most of the same acceries you have. Hope I've been help.

My hand scanner Optical Character Recognition and

scanners. Also, my AutoCAD program gives much better
definition in a Hercules mode. I know I'm just
postponing the inevitable and should go "VGA all the

Alas, living out here in the "sticks", my local
phone company does not offer tone dialing. I have
heard of others also having problems like lost data
files with DeskMate Address phone dialer. Oh well,
   time to look elsewhere.

Good luck with your new memory upgrade and other
"toys". Nowhere is it mentioned that after you install
that extra 128K of RAM that you must run SETUPTL2.COM
with the /A option, page down until you see the line
VIDEO MEMORY:, change whatever is there to 128K, update
the EEPROM and then reboot. I hope this helps, as I
was "upgraded" for 3/4 of a year without knowing this.
Be careful with the SETUPTL2 options, as you could give
