if i wanted to use COM1 and COM2 one day?? (The SL only supports 1 & 2 i

I'm stuck in bed for a week or two and I've decided to take on a game project
with my 1400 LT to fight the boredom.

Using a modified version of a David Ahl program that generates mazes, I'm
devloping a packman like creature that drives through the maze using the arrow
keys. SINCE the maze size is variable with the harder mazes being larger than
the screen:

     1. The maze will be stored in an array,
     2. The maze will be displayed on the screen as a window,
     3. Each corridor of the maze will take up 2 X 3 text characters,
     4. The screen will be able to display about 12 X 25 cells,
     5. Keep in mind, I am a basic programmer that wants to learn assembler.

QUESTIONS: 1. What strategy works best for scrolling left and right?
           2. What strategy works best for scrolling up and down?
           3. Should the maze run up/down or left/right?

I am guessing that basic will work fine. The creature will be moved with LOCATE
statements ... but it will probably take a machine sub to scroll the maze ...
Right?

Ok you asked for it <grin>! If you do not know how - learn how to use a
soldering iron. Once you have mastered this, buy a serial cable. Cut off the
connector that goes to the computer and strip the insulation from the wire (at
the end you cut off). Get a pin-out (from Tandy Tech manual) of the mother
boards serial lines. Solder the wires you have stripped to the motherboards
serial output lines.

This way, you can mount the other end of the cable at one of the expansion
openings or simply have COM1 as an "external" serial cable.

Yes, you need the use of the serial ports on both machines, a null modem cable
and software (Lap-Link, Brooklyn Bridge (both include the cable)).

My partner and I did an article for PCM on this subject. Although it used the
1400LT, the principals are the same. You might want to look at (or order) the

Does anyone have any experience adding a second hard drive to a 1000A? I have
a Seagate 238 (32 Meg) HD and want to add another 65 Meg drive. My three
expansion slots are filled, although one slot contains the Tandy piggy-back

modem and Western Digital RLL 27x control card).

I also have a half-height 5 1/4" floppy which I don't want to give up either.

Somewhere, I saw an ad for an expansion box which had room for drive(s) and
additional cards, but I haven't read any reviews about how well they work.

I would be interested in anyone with any information about how the extra hard
drive would be installed, whether I would need a second controler, and whether
it would be better to put the floppy drive or the hard drive as part of an
external box. Also, is there a reason for the extra drive cable in series with
my floppy drive?

Yes, you CAN connect the Tandon 10 Meg drive to the external connector on your
Tandy 2000 hard disk controller. You CANNOT daisy-chain it to the internal
connector. Check the power requirement of the Tandon to be sure the external
power supply you've got running the Seagate can handle the additional draw (I
assume that's how you're gonna power the Tandon).

As for the FAT destruction, I can't offer much in the way of help. You might
check your boot ROM version. It should be 02.00.00. Just fire up DEBUG and
type "d FE00:0000" to dump the ROM contents on the screen. You'll see the
version number over on the right. If it's less than 02.00.00, you will have
hard disk problems; order the newest version from Tandy National Parts. I don't
have the phone number handy, but Ft. Worth Information will. They take plastic
money for phone orders. The chips are U47 and U48 in sockets on the Tandy 2000
motherboard. Part numbers are MXP-0124 and MXP-0125. Price is (was when I
bought 'em) $21.39 each. Just unplug the old ones and carefully plug in the new
ones, taking the usual static precautions. If you won't be comfortable
disassembling your machine to get to the motherboard, your safest (but more
costly) bet is to take it into a Radio Shack Computer Center for the ROM
upgrade.

You CAN change the hard disk cluster scheme from 8K clusters to 4K clusters. I
put my old PCMs up in the attic, so I can't point you to the specific issue, but
Horace Ory (a SYSOP on another more costly network) wrote an article a few years
back explaining how. You might check with the PCM folks here to find out which
issue.

I'm not familiar with what you mean by 'grafix routines' with QB. I have done
alot with QB on my Tandy 1000A and have been a little disappointed with QB's
abililty to do graphic work. I just haven't found a way to utilize the full
range of the screens available with my 1000A using QB.

On the plus side, you may be able to create your own screens using 'C' or
Assembly, and link those to your QB files.

Good luck with learing QB. I really like the language. Incidently, if you are
using the most recent version, make sure your Config.Sys file has the line:
DEVICE = KEYCNVRT.SYS Without it, you'll have a lot of frustration.
Also, you might find it better using QB4.0 with your 1000A. It runs faster. I
have all the versions from 3.0 up, and like 4.0 best. Too many beeps, whistles
and the like on version 4.5. It slows everything down too much.

Tandy uses only rows of 8 memory chips, while PC compatibles use rows of 9. The
PC compatible uses some of the memory in the "9th" chip"s" for video. Tandy must
also use memory for video but cannot use this extra memory, so uses some of the
base 640k for parity and video memory.

In order for the EGA card to function with Tandy graphics, it must control
certain interrupts. What you are seeing, in essence, is the "hang on and don't
let go" of an interrupt by the card.

Remember that Tandy has superior graphics capabilties (compared to the normal PC
compatible) and certain "trade-offs" were made to get an EGA card to function
without being interfered with by these enhanced graphics.

In order to comile the subroutines and functions of Grafx, you must have the OBJ
files (to include in the library, that is). It sounds like you are trying to
compile a library that has "already" been compiled, using QB 4.0. This would
explain why it is looking for the runtime module (BURN40).

If the Basic source is available, you can make your own libraries, by compiling
the source.

Yeah, I seem to remember some sort of problem with the original T1000 series and

problems had largely been fixed when Tandy introduced the T1000 SX and T1000 TX

Mike,
I know it's compiled under QuickBasic 4.0, but the source code was included
with it. I just need to know which files to use to recompile it under 4.5.
grafix.bas has all the SUB's and Functions and Grafix.Def has all the Declare
statements, but it also calls INT10 with a CALL statement which the compiler
won't accept. INT10.ASM is the Assembly code file for Accessing the Tandy 1000's
SCREEN 5.
When you get 4.5, if you have the GRAFX.ARC file found online here at delphi
try getting it to compile into a QuickLibrary and let me know how you did it. Or
even in 4.0 it should work, I just need to know if I need to add a $INCLUDE
INT10.ASM line somewhere or what? Thanks...Steve Armstrong

The drive wouldn't be the problem. Any hard drive works with Tandy. The

change jumpers 2 and 5.

Back to the jumpers. I'm not really sure what you mean by changing 2 and 5. Do
you mean I should reverse pins 2 and 5 on the controller cable, or maybe remove
them? The only other thing on the controller board that looks like it might be
what I'm after is a double row of pins marked W1 through W7. They have some
jumper plugs attached to them but nothing is actually jumpered at this time.
Where I seem to run into problems with compatibility is cshow and any commercial
games. If I boot with the hard disk most of them won't even run, the sys locks
up and I have to reboot. If I boot from a floppy the game runs but when I try to
change to the c drive I get a message that says invalid command com. cannot load
and then the sys locks up and I have to reboot. I don't have much experience

If your hard drive works 'at all', it is specific for the the Tandy. If your
controller did not have the interrupts crossed (2 and 5), as the Tandy expects -
it would not function.

I think that your problem lies elsewhere. Commercial games are usually copy
proctected and will not run from a hard drive, unless they have a hard drive

That means your hard drive is formatted with a different version than what
you have on your floppy. If you boot from the hard drive, type VER and
press ENTER to see what version of DOS it is formatted with. You can do
the same when you boot from the floppy to see what version it is. Make sure
that you didn't copy COMMAND.COM from your floppy to the hard drive in
the directory where you have the game. If you booted from your
floppy, and formated drive C:, you'de have the same version on both your
floppy boot disk and your hard drive. The 2 and 5 Holly refers to are indeed
interupts and are in the W1 through W7 pins. One of those suckers is for
changing from interupt 2 to 5.

The 2 and 5 are correct or you wouldn't be able to use the drive
at all. Look to see how many versions of COMMAND.COM you have on
drive C:. There should only be one in the ROOT directory.

Yes, the W1 - W7 pins are the ones in question. However, you comment about the
games and the fact that the drive works other wise, says the pins are not the
porblem.

What games are you having trouble with? Commercial or Shareware? Some ( a
surprising number) of commercial games will not allow you to play them on a hard
drive. Others require that you install them on the drive using and INSTALL

There is a program in teh IBM database area that will tell the IBM=PC DOS to
format your drive B to 720K. Evedently the IBM system looks else where to see
what the drive can format to.

I think the program is called drvset.com. For now try using the driver.sys in

RE: Tandy 1000 SL (Re: Msg 15282)
     From: STEVEP To: MISAL

Mike, to answer your question, a little history. IBM has always had a
fascination with parity bits it would seem. Back in the late 70's when I worked
at Fairchild Semiconductor, we made a memory chip just for IBM. Most RAMs are
bit-, nibble-, or byte-wide. The 4116 is a 16Kx1, the 4416 is 16Kx4, the 6116
is 2Kx8, etc. IBM had to be different and have parity included for error
detection (but not correction) so we made them a 9 bit wide part, a 93419. They
obviously carried this desire over to their microcomputer when they designed it.

The 9th bit doesn't add any usable memory to the system, it merely adds a check
bit the same as the parity bit you can opt to either use or not use when you
communicate via modem. You don't transmit any less data by choosing 7 bits no
parity than if you choose 7 bits even (or odd) parity. You merely lose a crude
form of error checking. So usable memory is not lessened by the lack of the 9th
chip.

It is in fact possible to run without the ninth chip even in a PC designed to
use 9 chips. Very soon after the introduction of the IBM PC, many users
discovered that when the PC found a parity error it displayed a message to that
effect and then just stopped. Dead. Reboot time, your two hours of word
processing down the drain. In text applications, an error of one bit is not
disastrous. It will generally just change one character which can be easily
corrected if you can just save your work. In response to this, SoftTalk
magazine published a little utility called NOPARITY. You executed this program
and there was no more parity checking. No more dead stops because of a line
glitch, etc.

Tandy, in their usual quest for keeping costs down, chose not to implement the
parity bit. Works fine, obviously. For the same reason (cost) they chose to
use part of the normal memory for video memory.

To answer your other questions, my Hercules (clone) card has 64K of RAM on it
arranged as two 32K pages. My CGA card has only 16K on it due to the CGA's
lower resolution. But it is definitely on the video card in the form of 2
4464's, making 64Kx8. Looking at it another way, VGA (or the Tandy 2000) has a
screen resolution of 640x400 or thereabouts. Figuring a byte per pixel for
color, brightness, etc., this comes out to a requirement of 256K of memory. It
would hardly be practical to take this out of your user memory. As a last
example, since CGA takes 16K to do its thing, how would you explain the original
16K IBM PC's running CGA if the video memory came from the user memory. There
wouldn't be any!

Hope this clears up a few things.

When I got it on my disk, I tried to unZIP it with the version of PKZIP I
have. PKUNZIP said it couldn't unzip with that version of the files, I
needed a newer version.
So I came back on-line and downloaded PKZIP102.exe, which was able to
de-arc the file.
I HATE it when that happens. Why not standardize on ONE version of a
de-arcr, and keep it that way. The continuing updating of the .arcs and
.zips for miniscule changes in program time is impossible to keep up
with. If there is a GENUINE improvement in the program, then, if it is
backwards compatible, to files done with older versions, that is, I don't
have to download the de-arcr everytime I download an arced file, then
upgrade that program. Otherwise, be kind to us downloaders, and require a
specific version of the arc program be used for program arcing for
uploads.
I understand 'all the BBSs have gone to the latest and greatest overnight
modifications to .ZIP'. I don't use any BBSs other than Delphi or CIS,
which uses .arc or an early version of .zip. What the whiz-kids on the
BBSs do, thinking they're 'at the cutting edge' with the new
.zip-of-the-week is of no interest to me, and shouldn't be of any concern
to Delphi or CIS.

The reason we cover all three on Delphi, is because we get all 3 in the uploads.
Also, many of the older files have .ARC extensions... changing them to another

     From: NIKKI To: MISAL

Misal:

From the information i've read in past PCM issues there seems to be some
problem with a memory resident program and running some deskmate applications.
Since adding a 30 meg hardcard to my 1000sl I've been unable to run the music
and also the sound progr from deskmate. I've recentlyinstalled the set config
command but that did not cure the problem. I've disabled the memory resident
program so that it would not load, but I still get no sound. Thek me out or the
computer is taking no information. I've ru n the program prior to installing
the card, with no problem. Also I talked to my local r. shack and they told me
they think my DMA chip is no good or possilbly the RAm chip. I sure this is not
the case. If you get a chance to address this problem for me

Funny you should mention this, just now Nikki. I just talked to Hard Drives
International and they say that one needs at least DOS 3.2 (Tandy) for Tandy
configured hard cards to function properly, with certain software.

They did not offer a reason, but also stated that this was learned through
surveying customer problems. I can only assume that Deskmate would be a very
high probability contender, as it is distributed with the Tandy machines.

If you have a lesser DOS version, perhaps your local R.S. could "help you out"
in this situation.

  Paul,

If you are a Bob Jack fan (and aren't we all?) . . .

. . . then you may wish to check out Sierra Online, which he
wrote. It runs under the DeskMate interface and is a very good program, though
it does not have the versatility of ProComm, in my opinion.

It may be hard to find, as I am not sure it is in all the stores just yet, but
it is being carried by Tandy and it is designed to run under DeskMate and, it
is a giant improvement over even the most recent version of Telecom, the
  built-in DeskMate terminal program.

I got a chance to see it in action and the only thing that I disliked was that
the "whoop" sound it makes when you open a pop-up window seems to be out of
  sync -- kinda a half-beat behind. That's a small matter, I'll admit, and, if
you are already familiar with using DeskMate 3.XXX, then you'll be up and
running without even cracking the manual.

  Nikki,

This may be unrelated to your problem . . .

. . . but a lot of people run into a quirk of DeskMate
that keeps the Sound and Music applications from running if you have a printer
hooked up but not turned on! That is, you have to make sure the printer is
either completely disconnected or otherwise turned on.

I had heard about that problem but it had never bothered me until I bought a
new printer, whereupon that oddity took me by surprise. Greg Law reminded me
of that peculiarity and, sure enough, I flipped the printer on and Music and
Sound worked fine -- as long as my HP DeskJet was turned on. That had never
been a problem with my old Panasonic printer. You'll have to ask Greg Law or
someone else as to the why of it all, but that was the problem.

That must be the reason you do not like Procomm <grin>.

The new version of Deskmate is a "vast" improvement - if you liked the old one,
you will love the new (of course, it is slightly more complicated, with the new
and improved features). With your knowledge of the older version, you should be
able to jump right into the new.

Bob Jack was on just yesterday - he comes on often, when he is not working on a

Paul, From what I have read in PCM magazine the metal end of the PLUS 1200 Modem
is a little too long and will sometimes ground the card at the wrong
time/section. You are right as to Tandy not doing anything to correct this
problem. As far as the SL is concerned here are my findings.

(1) It has great sound and can blow any model IBM compat. away. Being able to
record sound and music on disk is great. I had no trouble getting an upgrade
from tandy because the chips used in the SL are 64 X ? (I forget). Any way it
was not too hard to buy unlike the ones for the EX/HX.

(2) Deskmate and a number of DOS commands are built in and that makes for
faster and more convenient operations.

If you can afford a TL go for that. I went for the SL because I could not afford
a TL but wanted the capability of the TL so I chose the SL.

I must also mention that the spell checker and main dictionary are built in so
you have the flexability to use any word processor that does not have a spell
checker and save your work and move to the desk mate main menu and choose the
spell checker from the F10 key.

 any more questions just ask.

You should have no problem with the Teac. I use Teac's in my 1000A. Just make

require on any brand of drive, so there is no difference there.

BTW, Teac's are about the best floppy drive around. Tandy used to use them, so
I'd have to say, the guy is just upset cause he lost a sale.

     Assembly TIPS
     From: JAXOMSTEVE To: MISAL

Mike,
Hi! I'm totally unfamiliar with Assembler coding but need to know a little.
I'm currently learning/writing programs in QuickBasic 4.5 with the GRAFIX
routines online here at Delphi. What I want to do is modify GRAFIX.ASM to load
what ever program I'm writing after it has installed itself. Since GRAFIX.COM
must be installed for any user to use the programs I write with It and
QuickBasic I figured the best way to distribute it with whatever software I
write, would be to use it as the startup program. That way it would be less
complicated for the end user. So I guess what I need to know is this: In
Assembly Language, how do you load a program, from a program. Unfortunately I
spend all my Learning money on Books for Basic/QuickBasic or I'd have one for
assembler but I don't. Any help you could give me would be appreciated!

The slot size makes no difference. 3 1/2 drives usually come with a faceplate
that is 5 1/4 wide. You will need (if not supplied by mfg.) a set of rails to
mount the drive on. These will take care of the 5 1/4 bay size.

The cables will work also.

I'm a little confused by your message. It looks like the first line is missing.
The message starts with "booting games....".

Are you trying to boot the games on startup or after DOS is run? Are the system
files on the game disks?

ray, i've noticed that the mounting bar on the plus 1200 is too close to some of
the component pads and have corrected that. i was confused by your comment that
it grounds at the wrong time/section??? what does that mean. with regard to
the sl i've made up my mind to get it. my question was if it had a standard
buss. i see all the various plug in gadgets on the market and would like to buy
some and play around. the ex buss is so different that i didnt know it and cant
plug anything in. paul

Actually you are not loading a program, you are using a routine. You must "map"
where the routine that you will CALL, resides in memory. Let's assume that you
have set aside 4000 bytes in memory and have 3 routine modules residing on disk
(beacuse their is not enough memory to load all three). You would load the first
one starting at memory address (DATA_SEG)
 CALL Routine_1.

To load another, you could flush the 4000 bytes or simply load over the top
starting at the same address (offset), and CALL Routine_2.

As you might begin to see - it is a little complicated, if you do not know
assembly.

The make a housing that fits around the 3.5 drive and installs in a 5.25 slot,
Ray. Telemart has these, as do many other hardware vendors.

The cable and cardedge for the 3.5 drive is the same as the 5.25. However, you
can get a 720K or 1.44 Meg (high density) 3.5 drive. I am not sure if the SL's
controller will handle the high density drive. It will handle the 720K drive.

sorry for getting off the track. As far as expansion slots it takes the PC
standard 8-10 inch half (8bit) cards.

I have had no problems finding the half cards to fir the SL.

The explanation about your modem was taken from a reply to an editorial letter
from a past issue of PCM. I know what the editor meant by grounding but i have
a hard time explaining it. It would take too long (for me anyway) to explain
on-line. I am sure someone who has more experience explainning it to people
will volunteer. (grin)

Glad your modem works.

Yes It does look rather complicated. I guess Assembly doesn't have anything like
BASIC's CHAIN "Filename" command. That's really what I want it to do. Guess I'll
just have to distribute it with whatever I write with instructions to load it
first and then the program. At least til I learn some assembly. Thanks
anyway...Steve...

Keep in mind that distributing copyrighted software utlitites with your
application requires permission from the authors. If you sent your application
up to a BBS, they would not use it with another authors utility - unless you had
it "clearly" stated in the documentation that you had their blessing - and,
their copyright notice was present in your software package.

Ok, your DOS version is fine. Now, are you Kings Quest and other games Tandy
versions? Kings Quest has an IBM and Tandy version. The IBM version would give
you problems, as your BIOS looks for the Tandy Signature in the boot record.

The 3 1/2" drives have basically the same type of mounting setup that some hard
drivves do. The physical size of the drive case requires it. It's actually
more like a frame around it.

Unless the game disk has the system files on it, you won't be able to boot them
on startup. Required are the 2 hidden system files and Command.Com.

A lot of game disks don't have room for the system files and Command.Com, so as
a rule, you are stuck with booting DOS and then putting the game disk in and
running it.

Ok, let's see. First question... What are the games, specifically. I think we
need to figure out if any or all of them had version made to run on Tandy only.
King's Quest I is a good example. Sierra made a Tandy specific version that
could only be run on a Tandy... The IBM version could only be run on IBM and IBM
compatibles, not including the Tandy.

There were a few others that were handled same way. If you are trying to run a
non-Tandy version of one of those, that will explain the problem.

If you will give me a list here or in E-Mail... I will see what I can discover
for you.
