        M E D I C A L T E R M I N O L O G Y was designed for anyone
working or studying in the medical field. The objectives for
this tutorial program are to teach users of this program:

            (1) to correctly spell, pronounce, and define commonly
                 used medical terms,

            (2) to recognize word elements and their meanings,

            (3) the rules for formulating medical terms, and

            (4) to enable users of this program to test their
mastery of the first three objectives.

Correct spelling, pronunciation, and definition of commonly
used medical terms are vitally important whether working in a
health care facility or participating in a medical related
course of study. In a medical care facility, the medical staff
is dependent on the proper use of medical terminology to
transcribe doctors' orders and fill out charts, records, and
reports with accuracy. It is essential that medical students
have a working knowledge of terms describing diseases and
medical and surgical treatments. Understanding medical
terminology will also make work or studies more meaningful and
job performance and use of time more efficient.

        M E D I C A L T E R M I N O L O G Y will teach the rules for
formulating many medical terms. Because these terms are universal
in their application, no matter where people work or where they
study the probability of these words and terms being commonly
used and understood is very high.

However, word formulation is not an exact science. There will
be occasions where there are exceptions to the rules taught in
        M E D I C A L T E R M I N O L O G Y. Learning medical
terminology is similar to learning any language. The rules of
everyday usage does not always apply.

        M E D I C A L T E R M I N O L O G Y is designed to help
people recognize word elements and their meanings. Its up to
the users of this tutorial to devote the time, thought, and
practice necessary to become proficient in the language of
medicine. Like anything else, the benefits received from this
program will be in direct proportion with the effort and time
        put into it.

Throughout the program these two rules will apply:

        1. ACCENTS: the principle accent is written in capital
            letters. (IE: DOCtor )

        2. SYLLABLES: division between syllables is indicated by a
            slash (/). (IE: gas/TRI/tis )

Many hours have been spent in research to insure that the terms
        used in M E D I C A L T E R M I N O L O G Y are the terms
people in the medical profession are likely to come into
contact with most often. However, it is impossible to cover
all accepted medical terms in the scope of this program.

It is my hope that you enjoy the user friendly design of M E D
        I C A L T E R M I N O L O G Y. Also, I hope you are rewarded
with increased knowledge and proficiency through your
application of this tutorial. Through testing yourself with
the end of unit and final comprehensive test, you will be able
to evaluate your progress. If you are not satisfied with your
progress, repeat any unit(s) you are weak in, or the entire
program if you wish. The more you use it, the more you will
        learn.

My appreciation to my wife, LEE DABBS, for providing me with
the initial inspiration to write this tutorial program.
