INT10FIX DOCUMENTATION Published by: PC Enterprises 2400 Belmar Blvd, Wall NJ 07719 Author: P. Joseph Calabria A known incompatibility exists with the PCjr's INT 10 routine. The problem concerns several modes, however, problems with the 620x200 2-color graphics mode (mode 6) can prevent PCjr users from being able to use certain software. Other computers that use this mode can change the foreground color, however the background color is always be black. The advanced graphic capabilities of the PCjr permit program the background color to be selectable. While this feature permits the PCjr to display superior graphics in PCjr-CGA and Tandy (TGA) modes, a compatibility problem which concerns BIOS can cause programs designed to run on other computers to operate incorrectly. If a program selects mode 6, then issues the command that changes background color on a PCjr, the foreground color will change on other computer. When the same program is run on a PCjr, the background color changes, as it should. As a result, screens may become difficult, or impossible, to read. The Patton vs. Rommel program (Electronic Arts) is a good example. When Patton vs. Rommel is run on other computers the program issues a command to set the screen color to white. This results in white text on a black background (remember: the background is always black in this mode on other computers). When the same program is run on a PCjr the program gets what it asks for, a white background and foreground. The result is a blank white screen. Other incompatibilities exist in the PCjr's INT 10 routine that cause more subtle problems. Mode 5 (320 x 200 4-color B&W) palette colors are different on the PCjr and modes 4 and 5 can have the color intensity changed on the PC, but not on the PCjr. INT10FIX makes no attempt to correct these subtle BIOS incompatibilities, although it does prevent the bug which prevents Patton vs. Rommel from running from causing problems on a PCjr. INT10FIX also corrects the same problem which shows up with the Hires-mode Procedures in Turbo Pascal. As a result, INT10FIX will also correct the display problems with programs compiled with Turbo Pascal. If you are using a PCjr, and you do not have a Compatibility Cartridge installed, it is recommended that you running INT10FIX every time you start your computer. If you have a PCE Compatibility Cartridge installed you do not need (and should not use) INT10FIX. The Compatibility Cartridge makes the PCjr's INT 10 routine 100% compatible with other computers, thereby preventing abnormal operation when INT10 is used.
