QUICK-CAT DISK CATALOGING PROGRAM Quick Cat is a disk cataloging program with class it comes configured to read disks in drive A and to look for the master catalog file (MAST.CAT) in drive B. You can change any of these defaults by running QUICKCAT INSTALL which will place you in the installation mode. Be sure that the file LOCATE.COM resides on the same disk and in the same directory as QUICKCAT.COM as the installation program will install to both programs simultaneously. Here are a listing of files that may appear on the QUICKCAT diskette; QUICKCAT.COM - main program LOCATE.COM - stand alone search module MAST.CAT - the master catalog file MASTCAT.BAK - backup of master catalog file MASTCAT.SDF - SDF catalog format of master file CATALOGING DISKS QUICKCAT offers two methods of cataloging diskettes, sorted and unsorted. Unsorted entry is ideal for cataloging large numbers of disks for the first time. You can even add a volume ID when prompted. After the final diskette is entered, the program will perform one sort on the entire master catalog file. Sorted entry works differently, when a disk is cataloged under the sorted mode, first a merge sort is conducted. Every file in the master catalog is compared against the current directory of the source disk. All files on the source disk not currently in the master catalog will be added. If the disk had been previously cataloged, any files previously in the master catalog but no longer on the source disk will be deleted. Finally, any files previously entered that have been modified in any way are updated in the master catalog. Each file listing has a remarks field associated with it which may contain up to 25 characters. SDF FORMAT You can convert the master catalog file to the SDF format for use by other databases like DBASE, FILE EXPRESS, or PC FILE. REMOVING FILES FROM THE CATALOG You may desire to completely remove all references to a particular diskette from the master catalog. When you choose this option, you will be prompted for the volume ID for the disk you wish purged. The program will create a backup of your original catalog labeled MASTERCAT.BAK. Be sure that you have enough room on the disk for a complete backup of the original master catalog otherwise the program will be unable to rebuild the file. Should this occur, manually rename the file MASTCAT.BAK to MAST,CAT. This will essentially restore your program to its original state. LOCATING FILES Quick Cat has two programs that take the drudgery out of searches and allows you to retrieve information quickly and effortlessly. There are two LOCATE programs, one compiled as a stand alone program while the other was included within the program. Locate is designed to search all file names and keyword/descriptions for a string match throughout the master catalog. It does not, however, check for matches in the volume identifiers, filesize or attribute fields. PRINTING THE MASTER CATALOG Quick Cat provides printouts that contain the file name, source disk, file size, file date, file attribute and descriptions field. Alphabetical printout gives a alphabetical listing of the entire catalog including volume identifiers. You will be prompted for the beginning record number., or you may hit (enter) which will cause a default of 1 to appear. You may enter any number less than the total number in the file. For example, if you entered record number 100, printing will begin with that record. Disk printout- gives a listing of all files on a particular disk. When this mode is selected, you will be prompted for the disk identifier , which is any name up to 11 characters. Status printout-is a alphabetical listing of only the volume identifiers. This option will give you a listing of all REMARKS and the available space on each diskette.
