PCjr ROM-CLOCK installation instructions. TOOLS REQUIRED: - 28 pin IC extraction tool (or small flat-blade screwdriver, or pocket knife) - Medium flat-blade screwdriver HARDWARE INSTALLATION (For excellent diagrams refer to the 'Diskette Drive Installation Instructions' in your 'Guide to Operations' manual): 1. Turn off power to PCjr and all peripherals (printer, display, etc.) 2. Unplug the PCjr's and peripherals' power cords from the wall outlets. 3. Turn the PCjr around so the rear is facing you. 4. Wait five minutes to allow the PCjr to cool down. WARNING: Serious shock hazards exist inside the PCjr. Make sure the power cord is unplugged before you remove the cover. 5. Using the medium screwdriver, remove PCjr top cover. (See diagrams in the 'Guide to Operations' manual) 6. Turn the PCjr around so the front is facing you. 7. Remove power and signal cables from the back of the diskette drive. (See diagrams in the 'Guide to Operations' manual) 8. Remove diskette drive from PCjr by pulling the rear of the diskette drive out of the mounting holes and sliding the drive out of the front panel slot. This may take a fair amount of effort, and the drive has some sharp parts which can induce a lot of pain if care is not taken. (See diagrams in the 'Guide to Operations' manual) 9. Locate the ROMs located just behind the left cartridge slot. The ROMs are the 28 pin ICs that are in sockets. The second ROM (one closest to the rear) is the ROM that the ROM-CLOCK will sit under. back __________________________________________________ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --------- | | This is the ROM ==> | | | | you need to find |o | | | --------- | | | | --------- | | | | | | |o | | | --------- | | | | =========== ============ | | left slot right slot | | __________________________| |_______________________| front WARNING: All parts are sensitive to static discharge. Follow the static discharge handling rules. (Don't perform work in carpeted areas, don't excessivly handle device leads, etc.) 10. Remove the ROM identified above using the 28 pin IC extraction tool (the orientation of this ROM is very important, so you may place a small mark on the ROM, so you can put it back in the same direction.) Place the ROM in the back side of the ROM-CLOCK's conductive foam. (If you are using the screwdriver or pocket knife, pry the chip up very gently, and evenly so as to NOT bend the ROM's pins) 11. Orient the ROM-CLOCK in the proper direction ('E' printed in the socket circuit board, located on the right hand side), and press firmly into the ROM's socket. Orient the ROM in the proper direction (the same way as when you removed it, and the same direction as the ROM just below it-- the one next to the left cartridge slot), and press it firmly into the ROM-CLOCK socket. 13. Install the diskette drive. (See the 'Guide to Operations' manual) 14. Reconnect the power and signal cables to the diskette drive. (See the 'Guide to Operations' manual) 15. Put the top cover back onto the PCjr. (See the 'Guide to Operations' manual) 16. Plug the power cords back into the wall sockets.
