COVOX SOUND FILE CONVERSION UTILITY APRIL, 1992 Converting Between Sound Formats CONVERT is a utility that will convert pre-recorded 8 bit PCM sound files into ADPCM compressed form. ADPCM stands for Adaptive Differential Pulse Coded Modulation. It can also convert ADPCM compressed files into 8 bit PCM. For example, you can convert 8 bit PCM files into 3 bit silence encoded ADPCM, then back into 8 bit PCM. Once a compressed file is in an 8 bit format, then the sound can be played back with minimum CPU overhead since no decompression is required during playback. Be aware that when you convert compressed files into 8 bit PCM, you will not necessarily get 8 bit quality. This is because during compression (which is a highly non-linear mathematical procedure), much of the original signal is missing. When you compress, you wind up throwing away information that cannot be recovered. The available options can be listed by typing CONVERT /? at the DOS prompt.
