Speech Thing Update Notice Software Release Version 3.0 April, 1992 NOTE: You can print out this file by typing PRINT README.DOC at the DOS prompt. MANUAL CORRECTIONS. Page 30, remove steps 3,4, & 5. Page 43, in the section titled "SAY Switch Commands", the /Q switch has the incorrect description. /Q is for "Quiet mode" which suppresses any message that is printed to the screen during playback. This is desirable for batch processing or DOS Shell commands when you call this from within a program. Using /Q is equivalent to using ">NUL" on the command line. MULTIPLE TEXT-TO-SPEECH PROGRAMS Your Speech Thing has been refined over the last several years with state-of-the-art software. This version currently contains the latest generation of text-to- speech software, version 4. To maintain compatibility with previous Speech Software, we've included both versions 2 and 3, SPEECHV2 and SPEECHV3, respectively. These previous versions are ideal for adding text-to- speech into your own programs. There are several text files that describe how to use and program with utilities: STDRIVER.DOC Documentation on how to install and program the Speech Thing DOS device driver, STDRIVER.SYS. STDEMO.DOC How to use the GWBASIC program, STDEMO.BAS PHONETIC.DOC Information on how to use phonetic commands. README.DOC This file. Any of these files can by viewed using the DOS TYPE command. Example: TYPE STDEMO.DOC |MORE. Use the DOS PRINT command to print the file. Or you can load these ASCII text files into your favorite text or word processor. IBMPLAY. IBMPLAY.EXE is a utility that will play back speech encoded using the CVSD technique (Continuously Variable Slope Delta-modulation) through your Speech Thing. CVSD is used in many software titles that specify the IBM Speech Feature card. Examples are "Writing to Read" and "Comptons Multimedia Encyclopedia". To load the driver, type IBMPLAY /P LPT1 at the DOS prompt before you run the application program. To test if the driver is working correctly, we've included a CVSD encoded sound file called MCARTHUR.SPK. Once IBMPLAY is loaded, type CVSD MCARTHUR.SPK and you'll hear General Douglas McArthur's farewell speech to Congress, complete with static and applause. You can remove the driver from memory by typing: IBMPLAY /Q. You can list the options available to you by typing: IBMPLAY /? For your convenience, we've set up the Launcher program to load the driver and speak the file. NOTE: an 6MHZ AT or faster PC is required for IBMPLAY. CONVERT. CONVERT.EXE is a utility to convert between sound formats. The instructions are in a file called CONVERT.DOC. Experiment by compressing some of the 8-bit files (.V8) down to 3 bit (.V3S) or even 2-bit (.V2S). I think you'll find our compression technology to be one of the best in the industry. COVOX ELECTRONIC BULLETIN BOARD. If you have a MODEM, you can log into our BBS and download all sorts of files for use with the Speech Thing. This includes more sound clips, ModPlay Modules, and developer tools. For complete instructions on using our BBS, to the text file BBS.DOC.
