Commonly Asked Questions Remember, you can get help anytime DV ======================== asks you a question by pressing . [SWAPPING] ? I want DV to swap to high memory. What's the easiest way to do that? Answer: Simple. Just put the following line in your CONFIG.SYS (if you run Windows, it's probably already there) and then reboot once for it to take affect: DEVICE=[PATH]HIMEM.SYS Make sure the "Allow swapping to XMS" switch answer is "Y" under Overall Settings in Setup (which is accessed by pressing Shift-F10). More esoteric swapping options are available if you have the need, but you probably won't. [CHANGING DRIVES] ? Why does DV lose file markings when I select another drive for the other panel [by using the DOS line to issue a C: command, etc]? Answer: After marking files in one panel, use Alt-F1 or Alt-F2 to change the drive of the other panel. This way, markings will not be lost. [PROGRAM ASSOCIATIONS] ? I'm having trouble defining program associations in setup. Answer: It's really easy. Simply type in the exact command you would have entered from the DOS prompt -minus the actual file name to be viewed or edited. For example, to enter WordPerfect for all *.DOC file, enter WP if your DOS command line would have been WP FILENAME; but enter C:\WP51\WP FILENAME if that would have been your DOS command line (because WordPerfect is not in your path). Then all you have to do is decide whether you should make DV swap for this command or not. If in doubt, make it swap. [VIEWING] ? Why does DV's screen sometimes mess up a little bit when I try to view a file [and can't]? Answer: When attempting to view a file with an external viewer in the non-swap mode, DV attempts to remain exactly as it was during and after the view. If there was not enough memory to view the file, some viewers issue a DOS message stating such. If the DOS cursor was at the bottom of the screen when this happens, DV's screen gets "moved up" one line (but DV doesn't know it). DV removes the viewer's DOS screen leaving its own "moved up" screen on the monitor in this case. To correct this situation, simply press F2 twice to remove and redraw the panels. To permanently correct the situation, setup this viewer in the swapping mode. In the case of DVZip, you could turn the "close integration" switch off (also or instead), depending upon your machine's memory configuration. ? I need more viewers [than have been provided]. Answer: The beauty of DOSview is that it can use any program (other than TSRs) as a viewer through program association (you define them in setup). So feel free to use viewers from other programs or just use other programs to view/edit your different file types. ? The included DVV.EXE has trouble with very large files. Answer: DVV.EXE was included for those of you who do not have another viewer available. There are some fine viewers available to you nearly free just for the asking. Vernon Buerg's LIST program, available from any bulletin board, works absolutely wonderful with DOSview, for example. Please remember that his program is shareware also. [MISCELLANEOUS] ? Sometimes when I press the / key for the directory tree, nothing seems to happen. Answer: The single-key shortcut keys ( /, `, =, +, -, ~ ) only work when the DOS cursor is at the beginning of the line. If you have already typed something on the DOS command line, then DV thinks these keys are part of the command. In most cases you can type a function key equivalent for the shortcut keys if needed. ? I have trouble editing commands on the command line [when the panels are showing]. Answer: In Panel Mode DOS command line editing is limited (see the second main help screen for the available keys). However if you press F2 to remove the panels, then all normal editing keys are available. The reason for this is that Panel Mode "steals" some of the normal line editing keys to make moving around the panels easier. ? Why can't I re-make DV's directory tree on the network? Answer: You probably do not have rights to the root directory of that drive. Ask your supervisor to re-make it periodically for you and others. ? Why does DV's prompt have a [right-pointing triangle] character at the end of it? Answer: So you can tell you are in DOSview when the panels have been removed. ? My secretary uses DV and I don't want her wiping directories [or doing other dangerous commands]! Answer: Turn the Expert Mode switch to off in Setup. [MOUSE SUPPORT] ? Where is the mouse support? Answer: There is none because it would take another 20-30K to do it properly. We wanted to keep DV's swap size down to around 200K or so while using as little DOS memory as possible (it now uses around 7K total).
