SPORTSTER 14,400
                           CHAPTER 1. FEATURES AND COMPATIBILITY

MODEM FEATURES

      The following features and capabilities
assure you of superior reliability and
      performance from your USRobotics modem.
   Error Control_V.42/MNP 2O4
Data integrity is ensured when Sportster
      14,400 modems con-nect with remote
modems that use the V.42 (LAPM) or MNP
      error-control protocols. Error control
is available on calls at 1200 bps and
      above.
   Data Compression_V.42 bis/MNP 5
      Data compression enables throughput of
up to 57,600 bits per second (bps) on
      14,4K bps connections. The data
      compression technique used depends on
the remote modem's capabilities. If the
modems connect under V.42 error control,
they can use V.42 bis compression. If
they connect under MNP error control,
they can use MNP Level 5 compression.
Achievable throughput for text files and
other file types is listed at the end of
      Appendix A.
   Flow Control/Variable Interface Rates
      Flow control, required under error
control, allows the rate at the computer
interface to be set higher than the rate
over the phone line. This feature
      provides greater efficiency and
      throughput. If your computer and
software support the higher rate, you
can transfer data between the computer
and modem at 38,400 bps, regardless of
      the phone line rate.
   Fax Capability_Sportster 14,400 Fax Modems
If you've chosen to purchase a Sportster
modem with fax capabilities, you can use
your modem in Class 1 facsimile mode for
      sending or receiving faxes.
   Programmable Nonvolatile Memory
You can tailor your own default settings
and store them in nonvolatile random
access memory (NVRAM). As long as DIP
switch 7 is set UP, the Sportster 14,400
      operates at the settings you've
specified each time the computer is
      powered on or reset.
   Link Rate Negotiation
      The Sportster 14,400 automatically
lowers its connection rate to match a
remote modem's lower rate, in both
Originate and Answer modes. This allows
connections with a wide range of in
      stalled modems. When answering higher
speed calls, the modem also shifts back
      up again.
   Modem Diagnostics
The modem performs three loopback tests:
      analog, digital, and remote digital.
      See Appendix F for information.
   Inactivity Timer
You can set the modem to automatically
hang up after a specified number of
minutes if there is no data activity on
      the line.
   Call Progress Detection
An optional set of result codes (screen
messages) lets you know when a line is
busy or there is no dial tone.
   Modem Settings Display
On command, the modem displays its
current settings, a handy way to check
      your transmission rate, S-Registers and
      other operational controls. The modem
also displays the defaults stored in
      nonvolatile memory and the factory
      defaults stored permanently in read-only
      memory.
   HELP Screens
      The modem displays screens that
summarize the command sets, Dial command
      options, and S-Register functions.
   Bottom Panel Reference
      Summaries of important commands and
other information are printed on the
bottom of the modem case. A Dual In-
Line Package (DIP) switch guide makes it
easy to tailor the switch settings to
      your terminal and software requirements.
   Stored Phone Number
Write your most frequently used phone
number to NVRAM. Then type a brief
command to have the modem dial the
      number.
   Quote Mode
Set the modem to Quote mode if you want
it to dial an alpha-betic acronym
      instead of a number.
