TITLE: File Extraction Error
PRODUCT: WordPerfect 5.2 for Windows

Problem
You are running WordPerfect 5.2 for Windows and the error message
File Extraction Error appears.

Solutions
The list below contains possible causes and troubleshooting steps
for the File Extraction Error message.

1 Try turning off the computer's turbo switch. Slowing down
the machine will sometimes enable WordPerfect 5.2 for
Windows to install without a problem. If the computer does
not have a turbo button, exit to DOS and press Ctrl+Alt+S,
then press the down arrow key until cpu speed appears. Then
use the left or right arrow keys to change the speed to
slow, press F10 to exit, then reboot. (NOTE: Steps to slow
the CPU speed may vary from one brand of computer to
another. If these steps don't work, please refer to the
documentation that came with your computer for
instructions.) If you have an NEC computer, you can change
the speed by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Minus, where Minus is the "-"
key on the number pad. You should then hear a fast beep to
indicate fast mode or a slow beep to indicate slow mode.

2 Try copying the Installation diskette to a temporary
directory and installing WordPerfect 5.2 for Windows from
        that directory.

3 Try booting vanilla. To boot vanilla, we recommend you use
a floppy disk rather than modify the AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS files on your hard drive. To create a bootable
floppy disk with a vanilla configuration, put a blank
diskette in the A: drive, then type FORMAT A: /S. The /S
option copies the system files that are necessary to boot
the computer to the floppy disk. When the disk is
formatted, type A: to get an A:\ prompt. At this point,
create a vanilla CONFIG.SYS file by typing the following:

        COPY CON CONFIG.SYS
        DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
        FILES=60
        BUFFERS=30

Press the F6 function key, then press Enter to close the
file. While the disk is in the A: drive, press Ctrl+Alt+Del
or turn the power off and back on to reboot the machine.

NOTE: Some computers have an option to boot from the hard
drive without looking for a disk in the A: drive. If your
computer has this option and is set to boot from the hard
drive first, you will need to change the BIOS settings to
boot from the A: drive first.

Also, check the LOAD and RUN lines in the WIN.INI file to
make sure they are blank. If they are not blank, place a
semicolon (;) at the beginning of those lines. Make sure
there are no icons in the Startup icon group. Then reboot
the computer, start Windows in Standard Mode (WIN/S), and
try installing WordPerfect 5.2 for Windows again.

4 Try disabling the cache memory in the BIOS setup on the
        computer.

5 Make sure the path to the Install files in the Install
        program is correct.

6 Make sure you have sufficient rights to the directory when
        installing to a network drive.

7 Make sure you are installing from original diskettes. The
error can occur if you install from backup diskettes made
        with the DISKCOPY command.

8 Make sure the old files are flagged RW (Read Write) if your
previous installation is on a network drive. If the files
are flagged Read Only, the Install program will not be able
        to overwrite them.

9 Try starting Windows with the /D:XVSF startup options (for
example, WIN /D:XVSF) before installing WPWin. Type "WIN /?
for an explanation of these options.
