Introduction

WordPerfect 5.1 offers several new and improved features designed
to make your work more efficient and less time-consuming. What
follows is a brief description of some of these features, as well
as a discussion on updating from WordPerfect 4.2 or 5.0.

Features

Equations
With the new WordPerfect 5.1 Equation Editor, you can display and
print mathematical equations by choosing from a palette of over 300
commonly-used symbols and commands. You can use a special split
screen to preview your equation as you edit, and can enter symbols
and characters through a unique user-defined keyboard. If your
printer can print graphics, you can print every equation character
graphically.

Help
By pressing Help (F3), you can display on-screen information about
the WordPerfect feature you are currently using. Let's say that
you access the Print menu; you're familiar with most of the
choices, but there are some that you're not sure about. You want
some immediate information without having to consult the reference
manual. Pressing Help will display information on the Print
feature. This context-sensitive help is available to you with most
of the features in WordPerfect.

Hyphenation
WordPerfect now gives you two hyphenation dictionaries to assist
you while creating a document. The standard internal hyphenation
dictionary helps you with basic documents, while a powerful
external dictionary makes tough assignments less time-consuming and
more accurate.

Justification
To assist you in formatting a page to your specifications,
WordPerfect 5.1 offers four types of justification. You can now
align text on both margins, or choose to align text on your left or
right margin only. Center Justification allows you to center text
between your margins. If you'd like to center or flush right
multiple lines of text, Justification makes the process easy.

Keyboard Layout
To see the key assignments for a chosen keyboard, WordPerfect 5.1
offers the Map option on the Setup: Keyboard Layout menu. The map
gives a listing of most of the keys and the functions they perform.
This feature is especially useful when you're thinking of
reassigning keyboard operations.

Labels
WordPerfect 5.1 makes creating mailing labels easier and faster
than ever before. Simply create a form listing information
specific to the type of labels you want. With powerful new merging
capabilities, WordPerfect will then print that information on your
labels without having to change margins or define columns.

Location of Files
New options on the Location of Files menu let you specify the
location of your graphic files, documents, and the Style library.
Using these options, you can more efficiently organize your
directories and have easy access to files when you need them.

Long Document Names
WordPerfect 5.1 will let you name your documents as you see fit,
allowing up to 68 characters and/or spaces for a long document
name. You can display your long document name on a List Files
screen. Choose from regular keyboard characters or special
characters created with the Compose feature.

Macros
With new WordPerfect advanced macro commands, you can use an almost
unlimited number of named variables, as well as more than one
arithmetic operator in an expression. {FOR} and {WHILE} loops have
been added to give you more power in defining your expressions, and
the {SYSTEM} command allows you to be aware of the current state of
most WordPerfect variables. You also can now enter the Macro
Editor with one simple keystroke sequence.

Merge
With the latest release of WordPerfect, merge commands can now be
used inside headers and footers, footnotes and endnotes, and
graphic boxes containing text. Merge codes are shown by name for
quick and easy reference, and you have the choice of displaying or
hiding these codes while you are doing normal text editing. Using
a powerful new merge language, you can select information from
specific fields to be merged.

Outlines
With the Outline Style feature in WordPerfect 5.1, you can go
beyond simple numbering formats to create outlines in a series of
styles to complement your tastes. After selecting the style for
your outline, that style can be automatically inserted. When
moving entries in your outline, WordPerfect 5.1 has the ability to
move all the sub-entries as well.

Page Numbering and Style
In the new WordPerfect 5.1 Format: Page Number menu, you can select
from three styles of page numbering (Arabic, uppercase Roman, and
lowercase Roman). You also have the option of including text with
your page number.

Paper Size/Type
If you've ever tried to print on a letterhead or an envelope and
found it to be a frustrating experience, this is the feature for
you. Paper Size/Type allows you to select from several pre-defined
sizes of papers and forms. If you can't find what you need, simply
enter the information about the size of paper or form on which you
want to print. WordPerfect will automatically format your text so
that it can be printed on your chosen form.

Printing
With the latest release of WordPerfect, you can select from several
new printing options. You can now print document summaries as well
as print selected pages of a document currently on the screen; if
your printer can print graphics, you can print any of the 1500
characters in the WordPerfect character sets. Double-sided
printing is now available for printers with that capability. To
shorten printing time, WordPerfect lets you determine if multiple
copies will be generated by WordPerfect, by your printer, or by
your network.

Pull-Down Menus/Mouse Support
One of the most eagerly awaited WordPerfect 5.1 features is
herethe new WordPerfect is fully mouse-compatible, with a
complete selection of pull-down menus provided for fast, easy
selection. These menus contain the full complement of WordPerfect
5.1 features, and can be accessed with your keyboard or mouse.
Mouse Support allows you to move your cursor, block text, and
select features and menu options.

Reveal Codes
The Reveal Codes screen in WordPerfect 5.1 is adjustableyou can
make it as large or as small as you like to allow you as much space
as you want for your normal editing screen.

Speller
The WordPerfect Speller has been enhanced to check for
capitalization errors, such as the capitalization of the first two
letters in a word (e.g., THis).

Spreadsheet Importing and Linking
The power of a spreadsheet and convenience of WordPerfect join in
this new feature to provide you with the best of both worlds. With
Spreadsheet Importing and Linking you can bring information from
several types of spreadsheets into a WordPerfect file; the
spreadsheet performs your calculations, while WordPerfect provides
the formatting necessary to create an impressive financial
statement. With the linking capabilities, the information in your
WordPerfect file can be automatically updated every time you make
a change in your spreadsheet.

Tables
The WordPerfect 5.1 Table feature provides a quick and efficient
way to format invoices, statistical forms, and any documents where
you need to compile and organize tabular data. The information is
formatted inside a table composed of graphic lines. You can
perform math functions within each table, as well as importing
spreadsheet information to create financial reports. Each table
allows you up to 32 columns and 32,765 rows.

Tabs
In the past, tab stops have always been positioned relative to the
edge of your paper. WordPerfect 5.1 gives you the option of
setting tabs relative to the margins that you set, so that the tab
settings will move as your margins are changed. If you're using
columns, WordPerfect will set a tab stop for each column. Also,
you can set hard tabs, which means that the tab will not change its
type (e.g., Right, Center) regardless of the tab setting.

Text Drivers
WordPerfect now contains several text drivers. If your display
card and monitor support extended text mode or a text font,
WordPerfect may have a driver that lets you use those features.

Units of Measure
For features that require measurements, WordPerfect now converts
fractions into decimals, and displays an additional digit to the
right of the decimal point.

WordPerfect Characters
If your printer can print graphics, WordPerfect can create any of
the over 1500 WordPerfect characters graphically.

Compatibility

The information in this section discusses how certain features or
files that were found in WordPerfect versions 4.2 and 5.0 will
function in WordPerfect 5.1.

Documents
WordPerfect 4.2 and 5.0 documents can be converted to WordPerfect
5.1 format. The simplest way to convert them is to retrieve them
into WordPerfect 5.1 as you would a 5.1 document, then save them.
Once saved in 5.1, the document is converted to 5.1 format.

If you are converting a 4.2 document, there are a few codes such as
Font/Pitch and Bin Number that do not easily convert since they
have no equivalent in 5.1. If these codes are located in a
document that you retrieve to 5.1, they are replaced by a comment.

If you find that your converted 4.2 documents are filled with
comments or you are unhappy with the appearance of a 4.2 document
once it has been retrieved to WordPerfect 5.1, you may need to
convert the document with a conversion resource file (.CRS).
Information on this process is found in Document Conversion, 4.2 to
5.1 in the WordPerfect Reference Manual.

If you are converting a 5.0 document, all codes should convert
completely. There is, however, a chance that your documents may
format somewhat differently than they did in 5.0. This could occur
for a few reasons.

In 5.0, automatic line height was based on what is called Font Cell
Height (the actual size of the characters from ascender to
descender). In 5.1, automatic line height is based on what is
called Point Size (the actual size of the characters from ascender
to descender plus the default leading for the font). This makes
font sizes more consistent when WordPerfect needs to select
automatic font changes from different typefaces.

Another change involves leading. In WordPerfect 5.0, leading for
proportionally-spaced fonts varied from .1 point to 10 points
depending on the information in the .PRS file for each font.
WordPerfect 5.1 standardizes leading for proportionally-spaced
fonts at 2 points. For mono-spaced fonts, no additional leading is
added.

Similarly, the size of a space in a proportionally-spaced font for
most printers in 5.1 has been standardized at 1/3 of the font point
size. In 5.0, the value for the size of a space was calculated
from the average character width of all characters defined in the
proportional spacing table.

All of these changes make your documents look better, make our
product better, and help us conform to printing industry standards.
As a result, however, some of your 5.1 documents may not format
exactly as they did in 5.0. Fonts may be different, the number of
lines that fit on a page may be changed, the space allotted to the
space character may be adjusted, and you may need to re-hyphenate
your document.

If it is absolutely essential that your converted documents appear
the same as they did in 5.0, you can try a few of the techniques
described below.

Fonts
If WordPerfect 5.1 selected fonts for your size attributes (e.g.,
Small, Large) that are a different size than the fonts WordPerfect
5.0 selected, set the Size Attribute Ratio feature in WordPerfect
5.1 (Shift-F1,4,8,6) to the following ratios: Fine=55%, Small=73%,
Large=127%, Very Large=182%, Extra Large=255%, and
Super/Subscript=55%.

If you are using a PostScript printer, the changes to the Size
Attribute Ratio feature take effect immediately. If you are using
a non-PostScript printer, you must make the changes to the Size
Attribute Ratio feature prior to selecting your printer. If you
have already selected your printer, use the Update option on the
Print: Select Printer menu (Shift-F7,s,7) after making the Size
Attribute Ratio changes.

Leading and Number of Lines on a Page
If the number of lines on a page of a document is different in
WordPerfect 5.1 than it was for the same document in WordPerfect
5.0, you can use the Line Height option in WordPerfect 5.0 to set
a Fixed Line Height at each Base Font or size attribute change in
the document.

To do so, you must start at the bottom of your document in
WordPerfect 5.0, then scroll backward in your document until you
reach a Size Attribute (e.g., Large, Small) or Base Font or size
attribute code. When you reach the code, enter the Fixed Line
Height for that font (Shift-F8,1,4,2,Enter) after the code. Repeat
for each size attribute or base font change. When you reach the
top of the document, enter another Fixed Line Height.

After you enter a Fixed Line Height at the location of all the Size
Attribute and Base Font codes as well as at the top of the
document, you should save the document, then retrieve it into
WordPerfect 5.1. The number of lines on the page should be the
same as it was in WordPerfect 5.0.

Word Spacing
If spacing between words in a document is different in 5.1 than it
was for the same document in 5.0, you can change the word spacing
value at any location in your document with the 5.1 Word and Letter
Spacing feature (Shift-F8,4,6,3). If a font is between 10pt and
14pt, change the Percent of Optimal setting for Word Spacing to a
value between 124% and 130%. The value should be smaller for
larger fonts and larger for smaller fonts (see Word and Letter
Spacing in the WordPerfect Reference Manual).

Leave the setting for Letter Spacing at Optimal.

Graphic Images
Any graphic images that you could use in WordPerfect 5.0 can be
used in WordPerfect 5.1. WordPerfect 4.2 did not support graphics.

Hyphenation/Language
WordPerfect 5.0 speller (.LEX), thesaurus (.THS), and hyphenation
exception dictionary files can be used in WordPerfect 5.1. The 5.0
hyphenation code module is not, however, compatible with 5.1, so if
you want to hyphenate non-English text, you must order the
hyphenation files for that language (see Speller, Dictionaries in
the WordPerfect Reference Manual). WordPerfect 4.2 speller,
thesaurus, and hyphenation files are not compatible with
WordPerfect 5.0

Keyboards
WordPerfect 5.0 keyboard layout files (.WPK) can be used in
WordPerfect 5.1 as long as they are located in the 5.1 directory
specified as the keyboard/macro directory (see Location of Files in
Reference). There are new key assignments on the 5.1 Original
keyboard layout, however, that will not affect 5.0 keyboard layouts
used in 5.1.

The only way to assign 5.1 Original keyboard layout assignments to
your 5.0 keyboard layouts is to go into the Keyboard Layout: Edit
menu in WordPerfect 5.1. In that menu, you must edit the 5.0
keyboard layouts by deleting the action and description for a key
and exiting the menu. Doing so tells WordPerfect to use the 5.1
Original keyboard layout assignment for that key.

For example, if you use the Original keyboard layout in 5.1 and you
have a keyboard with an enhanced BIOS, Ctrl-Insert (Ins) will copy
a block of text. If you are using a 5.0 keyboard layout, have a
keyboard with an enhanced BIOS, and want Ctrl-Insert to copy a
block of text, you must go into the 5.1 Keyboard Layout: Edit menu.
Next, you must edit the 5.0 keyboard layout by deleting any action
or description for Ctrl-Insert. Then you must exit the Keyboard
Layout: Edit menu.

If no assignment exists for a key on a 5.0 keyboard layout, you
must use Create (Shift-F1,5,7,4) as if you were going to create an
assignment for that key, delete the description and action for the
key, then exit the Keyboard Layout: Edit menu. If Ctrl-Insert does
not appear on the 5.0 keyboard layout in the example above, you
must "create" the key, delete the action and description, then exit
the menu.

WordPerfect 4.2 did not have the keyboard layout feature.

Macros
Macros created in WordPerfect 4.2 should be run through the Macro
Conversion Program if you want to use them in 5.1 (see Macros,
Conversion Program in the WordPerfect Reference Manual). Macros
created in WordPerfect 5.0 can be used in WordPerfect 5.1 without
any conversion.

If you use 5.0 macros in 5.1, remember that a macro records
keystrokes. Thus, if a 5.1 menu is different than a 5.0 menu, the
macro may select a different item than it did in 5.0. You can edit
your macros in the Macro Editor.

Printer Files
WordPerfect 4.2 printer files cannot be converted to 5.1. You need
to select your printer in WordPerfect 5.1.

A WordPerfect 5.0 printer file (.PRS and .ALL) can be converted to
a WordPerfect 5.1 printer file by retrieving the file into the
WordPerfect 5.1 Printer Program, answering Yes to the "Convert ..."
prompt, and saving the file. It can also be converted by going to
a DOS prompt, changing to the directory where the WordPerfect 5.1
Printer Program is located, typing ptr/convert filename (where
filename is the name of the file you want to convert), pressing
Enter, and answering yes to the prompt.

Important: We recommend against converting WordPerfect 5.0 printer
files to WordPerfect 5.1, then using those files in 5.1. Several
changes have been made to the 5.1 printing process which we feel
improve our product. If you convert a 5.0 printer file to 5.1,
some of those changes may not be in effect. We also suggest that
you make a copy of the printer file before you convert it.

.SET File
A WordPerfect 5.0 .SET file can be used in WordPerfect 5.1 by
copying that file into the directory where the 5.1 WP.EXE file is
located. Unless you made extensive changes to your setup options
in 5.0, however, you should probably just re-enter the same
settings in WordPerfect 5.1.

WordPerfect 4.2 did not have a .SET file.

Soft Fonts
If you installed third-party soft fonts (such as Bitstream
Fontware) into a WordPerfect 5.0 .ALL file and want to use those
fonts in WordPerfect 5.1, you can do so by converting the .ALL file
to a WordPerfect 5.1 .ALL file, then selecting your printer from
the converted .ALL file.

Instructions for converting the .ALL file are found under Printer
Files above.

Styles
WordPerfect 5.0 styles can be used in WordPerfect 5.1 without any
conversion. WordPerfect 4.2 did not have styles.

Tabs
WordPerfect 4.2 and 5.0 tabs are converted to hard tabs in
WordPerfect 5.1.
