== MediaMate User's Guide == Introduction MediaMate is a user-friendly script editor, a powerful playback system and a multimedia presentation tool used under Microsoft Windows 3.0 and 3.1. To design a presentation program with MediaMate, you just input text, load an image or draw a pattern on the screen, send or clear a new screen with an active visual effect, and control the process by adjusting the time delay or what is called the wait-key. And with the video enhancement function, your presentation will not be still, but more attractive. Using MediaMate, you don't have to be a programming expert to write a multimedia presentation. You can easily design a presentation application by selecting the MediaMate icons or buttons. Features: * Compatible with Windows 3.0 and 3.1. * User-friendly icon based editor. * Supports Genius HiVideo/PRO video board functions. * Windows compatible fonts are accessible. * Three ways to show the text and graphic. * Eight different effects to clear or change to a new screen. * Provides accessories to develop your presentation in an easy manner. Menu Operation The functions in the Menu operation are File, Edit, Config, Play and Help. File Menu The commands in the File menu let you open, save, or select a new file. You can also save under a different file name or exit the MediaMate application. New Choose "New" to create a new file without naming the file once you begin. If you select the New command while you are using the edit file, a Warning box will appear to ask you to save the current file. Open This command lets you open an existing script file by loading or selecting a file name with the extension TLL. The TLL extension is MediaMate's file format to record the demo scripts. Save To save an existing file, you can only choose the Save command, not type the same file name again. It will still ask you to input the file name if it is a new file. Refer to the Save As description if you want to give it a new file name. Save As This command names a new file or a file that already exists. You can name a file that already exists but it will not be updated without your confirmation. Select the directory and file name in the File name box, or select the existing file from the Directory list box and File information list box. Exit Closes the MediaMate program and returns to Windows. Edit Menu The Edit Menu provides functions to edit the instructions in the script file instead of manipulating the graphic screen directly. The color will be shown as grey, if no other instructions are given. If this occurs, you cannot select any of the commands in this menu. Refer to the script description for further information. Undo This command cancels the last command performed and returns the screen to its previous content. Cut This command removes a portion of the script file instructions and moves it to another position you specify in the file. Copy Select an instruction within the Script list, and choose the Copy command to copy it to another area. You use the Paste command to insert the portion you copied. Paste After you select the Copy or Cut command and located the area where you want to insert, choose the Paste command to place the portion you copied or cut. Delete This command removes instructions of the Script list after you have specified the location. You can select the Undo command to restore what you removed. Play Menu This menu lets you playback the script you created. You have additional selections of hint, cursor, and the Loop command. Hint This command shows the number of the current step and the total steps overall at the left bottom of the screen when you playback the script. You can select this option when you are developing your script to see the results instantly. Loop The whole script can be played repeatedly and automatically by selecting the Loop command. From Cursor You don't have to play the program from the beginning all the time during the modification stage. Move the cursor to the indicated instruction and select this command and the program will start from that point. Play Use this to play the script. Note: You can interrupt the execution of the program by pressing the <> key. Script List and Icon Buttons A Script list appears on the left side of the screen once you open MediaMate. It is composed of icons, script and edit commands. The edit commands Undo, Copy, Cut, Paste, and Delete have the same function as the commands provided in Edit menu except for the Radio button. Refer to the Edit Menu for information regarding the edit commands. Script list A script is a sequence of instructions defined within the icons. The script list is above the edit button and below the icons. Move the cursor to the position you want to insert the new instructions, choose the icons or the edit commands, and these instructions will be placed at this position. You can also scroll the script list by pressing the up or down arrow to see other instructions when the screen is filled. Icon buttons Icon buttons let you setup the multimedia elements. Each Icon button generates a Dialog box containing a set of choices. It also generates an instruction as soon as you complete the setting of a Dialog box. These Icon buttons are shown on the top of Script list in the sequence of Text, Image, Transition, Draw, Delay, Color-key, Wait-key, and Video. Since each Dialog box is the same, follow the instructions below to use them. OK Confirm the selection of one or all the choices. Cancel Cancel the selection of all choices, and returns the selections to the old setting. Test Use this command to see the result of your settings immediately. Text Select the Text Icon button and the Text Effect Dialog box appears. Inside the box, you can specify the text appearance, style, color, and location of the text with animation. Text Type the characters without exceeding one line. Effect The animation of text appearance can be decided by one of three effects. Font Font faces may be provided by a third party (other vendor) and must be compatible with Windows screen font. The Face list box shows a sequence of font faces your computer has available. If the Face list box is empty, find the font vendors or run Fonts in the Control Panel to install the font. The Font size can be selected within the list box, but some font sizes can be defined by the user. Style Three font styles can be selected as multiple choices. Some font vendors may not provide some font styles. Shadow & Border This selection adds a shadow or a border to the text with different colors allowed in the foreground and background. Foreground Color Choose one of the sixteen colors for the text color. Background Color Normally, the Background color should be the same as the screen background color. Align Adjust the text position using the Left, Right or Center buttons instead of using X-axis. Position Selecting the Position button sets the text position by cursor, or type the X-axis and Y-axis values directly into the box. If you position the text by using the mouse cursor, click the right button once to return to Dialog box. Image Choose the Image Icon button to import an image file in the Windows Bitmap format. File Name Type the proper directory and file name for your image file with the extension BMP. File & Directory The File list box show the Bitmap format file in the current, directory. If the BMP file is available, you can move the cursor and select it, otherwise use the scroll bar to go through the directory list box to look for the BMP file. Effect These three effects are the same as found in the Text Effect functions. Refer to the descriptions found in the Text Effect section. Position Positions the image on the screen. Transition Clears the screen of different colors and with selected visual effects, this makes your presentation look more attractive. Effect Use the Test command to see how each effect works. Color Choose the new background color of the screen from one of sixteen selectable colors. Draw Draw a graph on the screen directly without importing an image file. For example, you can apply the Draw function to design a video window. 1. Effect: Two patterns are available now. 2. Color: Select one of the sixteen colors. 3. Position: Locate and drag the size of the pattern chosen. Delay Adjust the time delay between two instructions to make your program run smoothly. Key Color Key color is an overlay function provided by the video card. When video appears on a VGA screen, it will be covered or overlaid by the VGA graph if the color of the VGA graph is different from the Key color. Always choose the same color as the screen background color when you define a video display window. Color Key You can customize your own color value by adjusting the Red, Green, and Blue scroll bars to get a color other than the sixteen colors displayed in the 16-color palette. Example: 1. Once you have drawn or cleared another color on the screen in the Video Window area, remember to use the color index (in 16-color palette) or the color value (R,G,B). 2. Set the same color index or color value if you want to set the Key Color on that Video Window area. Note: The Video card only supports 256 different values for Key Color, so any one Key Color value may cause many colors missed in the Video Window area. Especially for those colors that have the same value for green and blue, but a different value for Red. Wait key stroke Sometimes you want to control the program manually, you can use the wait-key function to stop the program automatically and continue the program from where you stopped it by pressing any key. Video The Video Icon button provides five main effects: Non-Window effects, Display window effect, Window animation effect, Multiple windows effects and Load video image effects. Both Non-Window effects and Multiple windows effects have additional functions. All these effects provided depend on the functions available in the PC-Video Board. Non-window The effects which are not related to the size or location of the video display window are called Non-window effects. Freeze, Unfreeze To freeze or unfreeze the video frame after you have opened a video window. Video source Three video sources are selectable before or after you open a video window. Display window: Open a video window at any location with any size defined by you. You can also add a border by defining the border color and width. Window animation: Define a starting point with a specific size for the source video window, and define the end point and size to move a video window from the start to the end point. It is necessary to define different sizes for both the source and destination window if they are in the same position. Multiple windows: The VGA screen can be split into three, five, or nine windows each with a certain size and position. The last video window will remain until the previous video windows are used. Load Video Image The hi-color of the video image file with Targa format can be imported at any position on the screen. Because Video images use the video memory, not the display memory, you have to set the Freeze instruction before loading the video image file. Be sure to Unfreeze the Video after you want to terminate the Video image. Execute The other application program can be called and executed during Play. You can search for files with the *.EXE extension only from the Files and directory boxes. The parameter of that executing program can be described in the parameter box. Once the application program is being executed, the following instruction can be continued or delayed by selecting from the Play option box. If you choose the Wait option, be sure to press any key or click the mouse button after the program closes so continuous instructions can be executed. Sound MediaMate supports sound files under Windows 3.1, or Windows 3.0 with the Multimedia Extension 1.0. Two basic sound file formats, *.WAV and *.MID, can be played in MediaMate. Before you use MediaMate to play the sound file, make sure you have installed the sound card and the drivers for Windows. (Read the Windows manual or sound card manual for if you have any problems playing the sound file.) The following description shows you how to operate the Sound Effect Dialog Box. 1. Select the Sound icon button and the Sound Dialog Box appears. The Sound Dialog Box contains two List Boxes and one Text Box. 2. Move the cursor to File Name in the Text Box, and specify one of the two file formats, either *.WAV or *.MID. 3. Move the cursor to the scroll bar of the Directory List and search the drive, directory, or go to the File List and select the file name if you already know it. 4. Use the Cancel button to cancel the settings you just selected. 5. Select the OK button to confirm and complete the settings.
