PC Paintbrush IV Release Information / Read Me file Thank you for purchasing PC Paintbrush IV, the first in our line of next generation products. This file contains specific release information and other items that became available after the manual went to print. Version Change Description --------- ----------------------------------------------------------- 1.0 Initial release. 1.01 Fixed CGA and AT&T black and white palettes. Fixed lock up in eraser tool when using some brush shapes and wide drawing widths. Fixed occasional pasting of dialog boxes into image in certain rare situations, undersized max print size in draft mode. Allowed running with no help file, to increase disk room for floppy users. 2.0 Added virtual memory support (See MEMORY REQUIREMENTS, below, for more information). Added Video drivers to support VGA (640x480x256 colors and 800x600x16 colors). In previous versions, a symptom of running low on memory that the manual did not mention was: Cut & Paste Rotate operations may not happen, instead a beep is heard. MEMORY REQUIREMENTS: --------------------- PC Paintbrush IV now uses Virtual memory, as well as standard DOS memory. Previous versions used only the standard 640K environment, and could easily reach the limit of available memory. Setting Virtual Memory: ----------------------- You can specify from 1 to 4 drives for virtual memory. PC Paintbrush accesses your disks in the order that you list them, so list your fastest drives first. Floppy drives are NOT recommended for virtual memory. To set your virtual memory, add the following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: SET PBTEMP=N:\S;N:\S;N:\S;N:\S -- where N represents the drives and S represents the subdirectory path for temporary files (subdirectories are optional). TO MAKE USE OF YOUR VIRTUAL MEMORY PATH YOU MUST REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM AFTER YOU ADD THE SET PBTEMP= LINE TO YOUR AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE. PC Paintbrush also recognizes SET TEMP=N: and SET TMP=N:, so if you already have one of these entries in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file you need not add the SET PBTEMP variable. FLOPPY DISK ONLY USERS PLEASE READ THIS: ---------------------------------------- Due to the large size of the program - and the relatively small size of standard floppy disks, a full installation of the product is not possible on only two diskettes. This package REQUIRES a hard disk for storage, as well as for work space for the virtual memory. "GENERIC" MICE AND OTHER DRAWING DEVICES: ---------------------------------------- If you have already installed your mouse (or tablet or other drawing device) in your computer and are using it with other programs, please select one of the "Generic" drawing device entries in the installation program PBSETUP. Then PBSETUP won't have to bother you with reinstalling your drawing device driver. Using single button drawing tablets (digitizers): ------------------------------------------------- If you are using a drawing device that has only one button on the pen barrel, you must select one of the 1 button type drawing devices in PBSETUP. PRESS THE ALT KEY WHEN PUSHING THE PEN TIP TO SIMULATE A RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON. Pushing the pen tip without holding down the ALT key is the same as the left mouse button.
