May 12, 1994 3-button / 2-button Mouse Driver for Windows NT (combined COM1 and COM2 Install) Copyright (c) 1994 Mouse Systems Corporation portions (c) 1993 Microsoft Corporation version 1.0b2 This is a new installable 3-button Mouse Driver for Windows NT. The files in this directory (or ZIP file) should be located in the root directory of a floppy disk (A:\ or B:\) to create a driver install disk. This installation is for both COM1 and COM2 ports. This version recognizes Mouse Systems and Genius 3-button mice with MSC 5-byte protocol. It also allows other 2-button mice to work on either COM1 or COM2 ports. --- Installation Instructions ----------------------------------------- 1) Plug the mouse into COM1 or COM2. 2) Load NT and open the Main program group. Locate the Windows NT Setup icon. 3) Run Windows NT Setup. Note the Mouse: setting. 4) Select the Options menu and select the Change System Setting... item. Press Alt-O, then Enter 5) The Change System Setting dialog will appear. Select the Mouse: list (press Alt-M); the item will highlight. 6) Press the Down Arrow key until the Insert diskette dialog box appears. 7) Insert the install disk into the appropriate drive (A: or B:). Type the correct drive if necessary. Press Enter to continue. 8) The Select OEM Option dialog box will appear in a few seconds. There should be two items in the list: "Genius Serial Mouse, 3 or 2 button on COM1 v1.0b2" "Genius Serial Mouse, 3 or 2 button on COM2 v1.0b2" *9) Choose the driver for the COM port you will use. Press Enter to continue. 10) The Change Settings dialog appears with the driver title highlighted. If this is a first time installation, the title should be the same as the title in the previous dialog box. Press Enter to continue. If you have previously installed this driver, the title may be not be the same. However, press Enter to continue; the correct driver will be loaded. 11) The Windows NT Setup dialog will appear asking if you want to use the current driver or install a New one. Select New (Alt-N). 12) Another dialog will appear requesting the full path to the driver file. This is the install disk (drive A: or B). Press Enter to continue. 13) The driver files will now be copied to the \DRIVERS\ directory. 14) Quit the NT Setup program using Alt-F4 (or Alt-Space, then C). 15) A message will appear that says changes will not take effect until the computer is restarted. Press Enter to continue. --- The installation is now complete --- The new driver will be loaded when NT is fully restarted. Logging off, then logging on again will NOT load the driver. 16) Remove the install disk from the drive. 17) To restart NT, Press Alt-F, then S to bring up the ShutDown dialog box. Press Tab twice, then the Spacebar to select the Restart check box. Press Enter to begin the Restart sequence. --- Note: Compared with the original driver... ---------------------------------- Note: this new driver provides the functionality of the original Microsoft driver "SERMOUSE.SYS" so reverting to the original driver should not be necessary. The new driver directly supports the following mice: Mouse Systems 3-button and 2-button Serial Mouse Genius 3-button and 2-button Serial Mous Microsoft Serial Mouse (both versions) Microsoft BallPoint Mouse (both versions) Logitech Serial Mouse --- Note: To restore the original SERMOUSE.SYS driver (Microsoft)... ------- To restore the original SERMOUSE.SYS driver (Microsoft): If you wish to later restore the original Serial Mouse driver, follow the same procedure above using steps 2) through 5). But instead of choosing the OEM disk option, choose the Microsoft Serial Mouse (or other appropriate selection), press Enter, choose "Current" driver (step 11) and follow steps 14) and 15). Restart Windows NT to use the new driver. --- Technical Notes ------------------------------------------------------ 1) This driver attempts to detect many types of 3-button and 2-button mice. It will buffer up to 20 characters of data from the mouse on mouse reset and analyze the bytes for the correct ID response. 2) If the mouse gives no reponse on Power-on reset or on RTS rising-edge, the driver assumes that there is a 3-button mouse on COM1. This driver thus has a default port of COM1. (see next note) 3) Windows NT reassigns COM ports based on availability of port addresses. If there are two ports: 3F8 and 2F8, these will be assigned COM1 and COM2. If there is only one port: 2F8, it will be assigned COM1. Thus, for a 3-button mouse that is not detectable, the COM1 driver may default to address 2F8 because it is the only port in a system. The same situation occurs with the COM2 driver. 4) COM3 and COM4 are not fully supported at this time (some 2-button mice may work on these ports). 5) This driver will attempt to detect mice that respond with 4F (2-button) or 4C (3-button) on power up. It will also detect 3-button mice that respond with 6D ('m').
