WESTERN DIGITAL "PLUS"-FAMILY LAN ADAPTER BOARD DRIVERS FOR USE WITH NOVELL ADVANCED NetWare, SFT NetWare, AND ELS NetWare LEVEL II v2.1 AND LATER VERSIONS INSTALLATION GUIDE This disk provides a single driver for the entire "PLUS" (WD8003) family of Western Digital LAN adapter boards for XT/AT and Micro Channel bus systems: StarLAN: StarCard PLUS (WD8003S) StarLink PLUS (WD8003SH) StarCard PLUS/A (WD8003ST/A) Ethernet: EtherCard PLUS (WD8003E, WD8003EBT, WD8003EB) EtherCard PLUS/A (WD8003ET/A, WD8003E/A) Ethernet Twisted Pair: EtherCard PLUS/TP (WD8003WT) Included in this subdirectory are the following files: INSTALL.DOC This File. RELEASE.DOC Version number and specific release information. Included in the root directory are the actual driver files: WD8003.LAN The LAN driver descriptor file. WD8003AD.OBJ The Server A-Driver object file. WD8003BD.OBJ The Server B-Driver object file. WD8003CD.OBJ The Server C-Driver object file. WD8003DD.OBJ The Server D-Driver object file. WD8003SH.OBJ The Shell Driver object file. NOTE NetWare installation procedures require the driver files listed above to be located in the root directory of a floppy disk whose volume label is LAN_DRV_200. If you copy these files to another floppy disk, be sure that you set the volume label of the new disk to LAN_DRV_200. If you are using NetWare v2.12 or earlier that was purchased from Western Digital, the required drivers are already pre-installed. Otherwise, refer to the NetWare Installation manual and follow the instructions for loading a new LAN driver from a floppy disk. During software generation, you must choose "Load and Select Item" from the "LAN Driver Options" menu. At the point in the procedures where you are directed to select the LAN drivers, the WD8003 drivers will appear in the list of choices as follows: WD Star/EtherCard PLUS RAM BUFFER SIZE CONFIGURATION INFORMATION For XT and AT bus boards, there are various configurations of the drivers that you can select. Some are designated for adapter boards with 8 Kbyte RAM buffers, and some for boards with 32 Kbyte RAM buffers. The drivers configured for 32 Kbyte RAM buffers can be used with any size RAM buffers. This is becuase they will automatically revert to using 8 Kbyte RAM if they find that the adapter board only contains 8 Kbyte RAM or is configured to only use 8 Kbyte RAM. SERVER DRIVER CONFIGURATION For XT/AT bus servers, choose one of the first 16 configuration selections that has an appropriate interrupt, I/O Base, and RAM address. For Micro Channel bus servers, a Micro Channel configuration must be selected; these are all described as "Micro Channel Adapter Auto Configuration". The usual configuration parameters such as interrupt, I/O base address and RAM base address have already been established by the system hardware configuration procedure when you installed the adapter board in your system. NOTE If your NetWare server contains more than one Micro Channel LAN adapter board, be sure that you manually selected a different Interrupt Request (IRQ) channel for each adapter before running the Novell NETGEN procedure. To do this, you must use the manual configuration option of the Set Configuration program on your PC system Reference Diskette when you install the boards. SHELL DRIVER CONFIGURATION This Western Digital shell driver adapts to Micro Channel bus boards even if a configuration for an XT/AT bus board was selected. The driver makes this adjustment based on the type of adapter board that is actually installed in a workstation, regardless of the configuration that you selected during the NetWare shell generation. Therefore, if you need a shell driver for both XT/AT and Micro Channel bus workstations, you may generate one for the XT/AT bus configuration that you need and use the same driver in your Micro Channel bus workstations as well. If an XT/AT bus workstation requires some combination of interrupt, I/O Base and RAM address that is not offered in one of the 16 configuration choices for XT/AT bus drivers, you can use the NWPATCH program to create a different configuration. This patch utility is available from Western Digital.
