HOTRAX Version 1.6g readme file.

What the program does, and how to use it:

With it's built in Organizer, HOTRAX makes your favourite places more meaningful.
When you add an entry to the Organizer, HOTRAX creates a link to the page
you are looking at, absorbs it's title, and gives you tons of space to make notes.
In the upgraded version a button appears to automatically add a thumbnail image
of the screen at the chosen site. In all versions, if you can type HTML,
you can easily place images and even activeX objects into a Organizer entry.
Later you can use the FINDTRAX function to search through your Organizer based upon
your annotations, the site name, or URL fragments or even the date!
Every aspect of HOTRAX can be customized: Toolbars are HTML pages that can be customized by you.
Dialog boxes contain pages that can be accessed and modified.

A. Unzip the installation to a temporary directory or floppy disk using Winzip.

B. Run Setup.Exe from the temporary directory or floppy.

C. Start the program from the icon installed in the Start Group (HOTRAX)

D. Optionally register and / or order a full HOTRAX system.

E. Wait for the System to initialize.

F. Use the browser as you would normally use Explorer or Netscape.
Note, all of the HTML Functionality of Explorer is employed.
Note, all hot spots in toolbars produce the HAND cursor indicating HyperLinks below.
Note, printing is accessed by <ctrl><p>.
Note, for this version if you wish to incorporate favourites into the Organizer (below)
it is best not to create subfolders in the favourites area. The subfolders will
be better formed by adding from favourites into a Organizer entry.

G. To add an entry to the Organizer press the ADDTRAX function on the menu, or press Organizer
and select ADDTRAX from the Organizer Toolbar.
NORMALLY this means your screen will be split with the Browse View on the left of
the program window and the Organizer on the right, and the ADDTRAX Dialog box on top.

   1) The ADDTRAX Dialog box shows the title of the page (which you can change) as
the default title for the Organizer Entry.

   2) The ADDTRAX Dialog box also shows the URL of the page (which you can change) as
the default HOTRAX URL for the Organizer Entry.

   3) The ADDTRAX Dialog box also presents a large area to enter your comments,
please use carriage returns so that the automatic formatting works well.
You can type anything you wish into the notes including raw HTML.
NOTE: any Hyperlinks triggered in the Organizer cause navigation in the Browser window
and not in the Organizer window.

   4) If you want to append from Explorer's Favourites List, you can do that by clicking
the Favourites button at the right of the ADDTRAX Dialog box. This is a good way
of grouping or organizing favourites, both visually and with annotation.

Sometimes you may wish to keep the ADDTRAX dialog box open and continue browsing and
making notes as you go along. You can even use the BROWSE button to resume full screen
browsing without closing the ADDRAX dialog box. However only one ADDTRAX Box is
enabled at andy one moment. This would be most effective if The main HOTRAX window
is not at FULL SCREEN, so the ADDTRAX dialog box does not get hidden.
It will re-appear in these circumstances if you press ADDTRAX again.

H. To visit a Hotracked site that you see in the Organizer window, click on the highlighted
   title of the entry.

I. To Delete an Entry Press the EDIT button that is at the right of that entry and
when the EDITRAX Dialog box opens select Delete.

J. To Modify any entry Press the EDIT button that is at the right of that entry and
when the EDITRAX Dialog box opens you can change items as indicated in (G.) above.
The dates are not accessible, the Organizer/log book metaphor is tightly adhered to,
and the system is dependent upon the integrity of the dates and times staying valid
   and true.

K. 1) To search through the Organizer for something on a day use FINDTRAX and type the day
then press FIND FIRST, or FIND NEXT, as the case may be.

   2) To search through the Organizer for something in a month use FINDTRAX and type the month
then press FIND FIRST, or FIND NEXT, as the case may be.

   3) To search through the Organizer for something with a word or phrase in the title
use FINDTRAX and type the word or phrase then press FIND FIRST, or FIND NEXT,
   as the case may be.

   4) To search through the Organizer for something at a particular address
use FINDTRAX and type the address fragment then press FIND FIRST, or FIND NEXT,
   as the case may be.

   5) To search through the Organizer for something associated with a particular comment
use FINDTRAX and type the comment or fragment of it then press FIND FIRST, or
FIND NEXT, as the case may be.

When you see the contents of the Organizer that are pertinent to your search in the
FINDTRAX window you can treat it the same as the Organizer; you can edit, delete, or
   link to the HOTRACKED site.

KK. In full registered versions of HOTRAX, when you access a page with many links in it,
you can copy that page to the Organizer. Links clicked upon in the Organizer which
appears at the right of the screen cause the familiar browser at the left to load the
appropriate page. This is incredibly useful when browsing through search results
that come from AltaVista or Yahoo or most other Online search engines. It is also useful
whenever you arrive at any index/page with many links since you do not need to page back
to the selection which may not be immediate, and while the new page comes in you can
read and determine what your next selection might be.
In full registered versions of HOTRAX, you can also page back and forth through screens
on the right side of the program making it easy to deal with layered in depth searches.

L. To customize the product LOGO, use the HELP option in the Organizer to display the local
HELP.HTM and discove which files need to be accessed, or use the right mouse button to
get the name of the HTM file that could be edited. You can access the audio files
directly and rerecord or eliminate them (check "hotrax\go\*.wav").
Often all that needs to be done is to change a GIF or BMP image in "hotrax\go" such as
"candy0.gif" in the topmost toolbar "startupm.htm" or
"diaryban.gif" in the Organizer "Diary0.htm" or
"foot.gif" in the ADDTRAX background "diary.htm" or
   "diarybam.gif" in the finders.

M. To customize startup screens change "hotrax\go\Index.htm".

N. To change the main browser toolbar modify "hotrax\go\toolbar.htm". (if you use separate
toolbars for the browser when expanded (browse mode) and when half screen (Organizer mode)
create "hotrax\go\toolbar1.htm" and "hotrax\go\toolbar0.htm" - the sytem will test for the
existence of "hotrax\go\toolbar1.htm" and then use the appropriate method of updating.)

O. To change the Organizer toolbar modify "hotrax\go\ftoolbar.htm".

P. To change the top toolbar modify "hotrax\go\startupm.htm". Where ever HOTRAX finds
the <!address> tag in startupm.htm it will place the scrolling marquee of the current
URL and the anchor to the m.s.i.e. launcher gif ("hotrax\go\expl.gif").
Note the width of the system panels can be controlled by dragging the divider
between the URL history at the top left and the top right toolbar. It can be dragged
to 20% at the left or 80% to the right.

Q. The m.s.i.e. launcher, which is embedded in the scrolling marquee as a hot link opens
a vanilla explorer with the current page enabling other system options.

R. If you use frames in your toolbars the special program functions are to be navigated
   by the topframe.

S. The color scheme for the type in window is produced at startup by a simple text file
called "tcolor.txt" the background is determined by the first 3 numbers (0-256) R,G,B,
and the text color is determined by the next 3 numbers (0-256) R,G,B. Fimally the height
of the toolbars are determined by the 7th number in pixels.

T. The History is maintained in a file called "hotrax\history.txt", you can access it in
notepad or by pressing BACK at the start of a session to return to sites in previous
   sessions.

U. If an HTML page is found on the hard-disk or at a friendly site, it can be a launcher.
The menu item System/Friends enables adding or deleting friendly sites.
the behaviour of a launcher page is that local exe files can be executed when
referencing anchors are clicked instead of the normal behaviour cueing a download.
More effective launcher behaviour can be generated by using bat files, which contain
invocations of exe files with their argument lists.
In this way friendly sites (such as intranets) can provide launcher pages for users
of HOTRAX systems to get real work done (either by wsFTP or other transactions) beyond
the secure isolation of normal browser behaviour, and without activeX development.

V. Defaults that are normally set by Explorer should be set in the usual way, by invoking
m.s.i.e. and setting them. HOTRAX is not designed to eliminate the m.s.i.e. interface
but to enhance the appearance and operation of this excellent browser engine.
Most months we do not see Explorer naked on our screens.

W. The Demo version normally lasts just over a month. The destruction is initiated by the
opening of the FINDTRAX dialog box. If the FINDTRAX finds an entry that is too old
it will notify you of this problem and warn that the Organizer is about to be destroyed.
If you have saved important notes, use <CTRL><ALT><DEL> now. Then hand edit the Organizer,
or rename it for viewing in the regular browser; then re-install the software.
You can drag and drop the renamed Organizer (rename from "hotrax\go\diary0.htm")into the
main browse window and effectively HOTRACK it.
To prevent self destruction of DEMO versions always remove entries that are over
   1 month old.

X. Drag and drop:
You can drag and drop HTM files into the main browser window, and otehr files can be
dropped into the type in window at the top.

Y. When your session is over, all of the URLS in the type in window at the top of the
screen are appended to "hotrax\history.txt" You can edit this window as any normal
text window however entering a <RETURN> or <ENTER> keystroke initiates a navigation
response from the system; But pasting in sections with returns does not initiate
   navigation.
