INSTALLING SYMPATHY
-------------------

By the time you read this, you should have unpacked the files above into
a directory on your hard disk. In the Windows 95 release, the Sympathy and
Dictionary Builder applications are called SYMPATHY.EXE and TSBUILD.EXE;
in the Windows 3.1 release, they are called SYM16.EXE and TSB16.EXE.

It is possible to run these applications without any further set-up work.
However, if you wish to create program icons and file type associations to
make it easier to start Sympathy, the method you should use depends on
which major version of Windows you are running:

Windows 95
----------

There are many different ways of starting applications under Windows 95;
two suitable methods are suggested below:

Method 1 - Creating a desktop shortcut for Sympathy:

    1. Click on the Start button and then point to Programs;

    2. Click on Windows Explorer;

    3. Locate and double-click on the directory where Sympathy is installed;

    4. Drag the entry for the Sympathy application (or the Tsbuild application)
       onto the desktop.

Method 2 - Adding Sympathy to the Programs menu:

    1. Click on the Start button and then point to Settings;

    2. Click on Taskbar..., then click on the Start Menu Programs tab;

    3. Click on Add..., then click on Browse...;

    4. Locate the directory where Sympathy is installed and double-click
       on the Sympathy application (or the Tsbuild application);

    5. Click on Next and then double-click on the menu where you want
       Sympathy (or Tsbuild) to appear;

    6. Click on Finish.

Adding the .SYM file type:

    1. Click on the Start button and then point to Programs;

    2. Click on Windows Explorer;

    3. Select Options... from the View menu;

    4. Click on the File Types tab, then on New Type...;

    5. Enter SYM as the Associated Extension, then click on New...;

    6. Enter Open as the action, then click on Browse...;

    7. Locate the directory where Sympathy is installed and double-click
       on the Sympathy application;

    8. Click on OK, then click on Close.

Windows 3
---------

Method 1 - Drag and Drop:

  Perhaps the easiest way to create application icons on Windows 3 is to
  open the File Manager and Program Manager simultaneously on the screen.
  Find the Sympathy directory in the File Manager, then simply drag the
  SYM16.EXE and TSB16.EXE applications from the File Manager and drop
  them onto the desired group in the Program Manager.

  The same process can be used to create Program Manager icons for the
  *.WRI (Windows write) files and *.HLP (Windows help) files; also the
  *.SYM (Sympathy grid) files, but only after an association has been set
  up for them (see below).

Method 2 - Using Program Manager File/New...:

  An alternative way to create application icons is to use the Program
  Manager File/New... command:

      1. Select the Program Manager window and open a suitable program
         group in which to install Sympathy;

      2. Select File/New... from the Program Manager menu;

      3. Ensure Program Item is selected in the New Program Object dialog,
         then select OK;

      4. Click on Browse... and use the file browser to find and select
         the SYM16.EXE application, then select OK;

      5. Select OK in the Program Item Properties dialog.

  Repeat this for the TSB16.EXE application.

Adding the .SYM association:

  Adding an association for .SYM in the File Manager will enable you to
  edit a Sympathy grid (.SYM) file simply by double clicking on the grid
  file in File Manager. You will also be able to drag grid files into
  Program Manager groups and start Sympathy by double clicking on them
  there.

  To create the association follow these steps:

    1. Select File/Associate... from the File Manager menu;

    2. Type SYM into the "Files with Extension:" text entry box;

    3. Click on Browse... and use the file browser to find and select
       the SYM16.EXE application, then select OK;

    4. Select OK in the Associate dialog.

RUNNING SYMPATHY
----------------

You can now start the Sympathy applications by double-clicking on the icons
created during the installation.

A tutorial for Sympathy can be viewed and printed from the Sympathy
Introduction Screen. Further reference documentation for Sympathy is
available in the Sympathy on-line help file.

The TEA&Sympathy Dictionary Builder utility is documented in its own
help file, which can be viewed by starting the application and clicking
on the Help... button.

Until you buy and install a license to use the program, Sympathy runs
in a special evaluation mode in which grid saving is impossible. If
you decide to use Sympathy, you must obtain a license: to do this,
complete and send off the order form (which can be viewed and printed
from the Introduction Screen).
