WinWizard
The Undocumented Ways to Customized Your Desktop

------------
INTRODUCTION
------------
Windows 95 and NT are large and complex pieces of software with
extensive features and capabilities. Microsoft's primary goal
is to focus on writing the code for these operating systems,
documenation is not a high priority on its list.

These days, many people don't want to read a thick manual anyway,
so it's Microsoft's intention that the operating systems should
be "discoverable" without a manual, they let the user to figure
out how to use Windows on his/her own.

Even though some of the features such as high-color icons and
the ability to change the "Recycle Bin" icon, etc. can only be
done using add-ons such as the Microsoft Plus! Most features
in WinWizard cannot even be accomplished with conventional
methods in standard Windows documentation or published in
many books about Windows.

FEATURES
--------
* Provides high-color icons without Microsoft Plus!
* Customizes My Computer, Network Neighborhood, Recycle
Bin, InBox, and My Briefcase icons.
* Turns on/off bitmap images as icons in Explorer.
* Prevents desktop changes after a reboot.
* Allows the removal of the Network Neighborhood icon.
* Makes the Start Menu snappier (eliminates the delay).
* Other tips and tricks about desktop customization.

NOTE: Removal the Network Neighborhood icon will also remove all
your network connectivity. Only use this feature on standalone
computer, not on computers that connected to a network such as
Novell LAN or you won't see other computers using Network
Neighborhood at all.

------------
INSTALLATION
------------
Run SETUP.EXE. You will be asked to enter a folder to install
WinWizard (default is c:\Program Files\WinWizard).

------------------------------
HARDWARE/SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
------------------------------
Computers running Windows 95/NT 4.0.

WinWizard has been developed and tested on a 300 MHz Pentium II
computers with 128 MB of SDRAM, a 4 MB SGRAM Diamond Viper 330V
running Windows NT 4.0 workstation.

It has also been tested on a Gateway 2000 P5-120 with 64 MB RAM
running Windows 95 (SR2), and a P5-90 with 32 MB RAM running
Windows 95 (SR1), both have S3 Trio64V+-based graphic boards.

WinWizard has not been tested on any other platform because I
don't have all the time and resources in the world.

Therefore, if you don't have the above setups, I canot
guarantuee that WinWizard will work on your machine.

----------------------------------------------------
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SHAREWARE AND REGISTERED VERSION
----------------------------------------------------
Shareware (free):
1) Customizes the Recycle Bin icon.
2) Customizes the Network Neighborhood icon.
3) Removes/Restores Network Neighborhood icon.
4) Changes menu time delay.
5) Displays bitmaps as icons in Explorer.
6) No "nag" screen (I don't believe in "nag" screen" ;-)

Registered ($17):
Above functions plus:
7) Provides high-color icons.
8) Customizes My Computer icon.
9) Customizes InBox icon.
10) Customizes My Briefcase icon
11) Toggles 5) above.
12) Prevents desktop changes.
13) Restores Windows desktop defaults.
14) Your name (or company name) is displayed on the opening screen
and in the About window. No more shamefully displaying that
you are merely evaluating this software. You're now becoome
    a power user ;-)
15) You will know in your heart that you have done the right thing
    (both legally and morally).
16) You will be notified via e-mail of new major releases and will
be qualified for substantial discount for the upgrade.
17) Although technical support has not been a drastic necessity,
registered users are naturally given more priority and
    attention regarding technical support.

---------
OPERATION
---------
Icons Bit per Pixel:
The default icon color depth in Windows is 4 bit per pixel
(16 colors). If you want to spruce up your desktop with
photo-realistic icons (such as turn your own family photos
into icons on the desktop), you have to purchase an add-on
such as the Microsoft Plus! This feature allows you to
use high-color and true-color icons without Microsoft Plus!
(for more information about programs that are capable of
turning your family photos into photo-realistic icons such
as Photo Icons 32 or Icons Control 32, please visit my web
	site at http://members.aol.com/doanc/products.html).

Use Thumbnails For Bitmaps:
This feature allows you to display the actual bitmaps' image
as their icons in Explorer. Note that since each bitmap has
to be rendered into an icon, Explorer may take a lot longer
to display a folder which has lots of bitmap files.

Ignore Desktop Changes:
Use this feature to prevent Windows from remembering the
arrangement of icons, windows status, and the taskbar
position on your desktop after a reboot.

Remove Network Neighboorhood:
To remove the Network Neighborhood icon from your desktop.
Note that this also removes all your network connectivity.
Use this feature only on standalone computer and if your
computer is not on a LAN.

Start Menu Delay:
When you select a submenu on the Start Menu, there's a
slight delay. You can eliminate this delay by setting
this value to smaller number (the default value is 400).
You can even set this value to zero to hyper charge the
	Start Menu.

Restore Original Settings:
This will restore your desktop to its original state
*before* running WinWizard the very first time. Note
that you'll lose all your custom desktop configuration.

-----------------------
WINDOWS 95'S EASTER EGG
-----------------------
1) Right click your desktop and select "New", and then "Folder".
2) Rename the folder to "and now, the moment you've all been
    waiting for".
3) Rename the folder again to "we proudly present for your viewing
    pleasure".
4) Rename the folder one more time to "The Microsoft Windows 95
    Product Team!".
5) Double-click the folder to open it and you'll see the show.

-------------
TIPS & TRICKS
-------------
Restarting Windows Without Restarting the Computer:
---------------------------------------------------
1) Choose Shutdown from the Start Menu.
2) Hold down the Shift key while clicking Yes.

Use Your Own Windows 95 Start Logo:
-----------------------------------
1) Save the file LOGO.SYS in the root directory of the boot drive
(usually c:\) by renaming it to LOGO.SAV (this is simply a
    bitmap file).
2) Supply your own bitmap file that has the same size with
    LOGO.SYS and name it LOGO.SYS.

Use a Different Icon For Folders:
---------------------------------
1) In Explorer, select "View", then "Options", then the "File
    Types" tab.
2) Select "Fodler" from the list, then click "Edit".
3) Click "Change Icon".
4) Use the file dialog to find the icon you like, this can be
either an .ico file or an icon from a DLL/EXE file.
5) Click OKs all the way out.

Bringing back "Tip Of The Day":
-------------------------------
After you installed Windows 95, it displayed the Welcome screen
every time Windows started. Getting rid of this screen is as
easy as clearing the box that says "Show This Welcome Screen Next
Time You Start Widnows", but how do you bring it back? Simply run
the program WELCOME.EXE in your Windows folder and re-checking
the box.

Get Rid of Shortcut Arrows:
---------------------------
Have you noticed the tiny arrow in the corner of every shortcut
icons on your desktop? This is an indication that the icon
represents a shortcut (a pointer to the a file), not the actual
file. You can remove these tiny arrows by performing the
following steps:
1) Open up the Registry Editor by clicking "Start", "Run",
then type in "RegEdit", then click OK.
2) Press CTRL+F to open the Find dialog box.
3) Type in IsShortCut and click OK.
4) When the Editor finds an IsShortCut value, delete it.
5) Press F3 to repeat the search and delete the next
    IsShortcut value.
6) Repeating step 5) until you remove all the IsShortcut
    values from the Registry.
7) Restart Windows and all those little shortcut arrows will
    disappear.

NOTE: If you remove the shortcur arrows, you'll no longer
know which icons are real files and which are pointers.
However, you can right click on the icon and if it has a
"Shortcut" tab, it's a shortcut. Otherwise, it's a real file.

Getting Rid of the Speaker Icon In the System Tray:
---------------------------------------------------
Double-click the Multimedia icon in the Control panel and
deselect the "Show Volume Control On the TaskBar".

Getting Rid of the Blinking Modem Icon In the System Tray:
----------------------------------------------------------
Delete the file LIGHTS.EXE from your Windows System folder.

A single user license permits a user to use WinWizard only on
a single computer. Licensed users may use the program on different
computers as long as there is no possibility of it being used at
one location while it is being used at another, or on a network by
more than one user at a time.

A site license is required by a corporation, company, educational
institution, or governmental agency for use of WinWizard
software on the total number of computers that will use the software.

Thank you for supporting the shareware software concept and
encouraging the future development of high quality Windows shareware.
