DART Generic Install.
---------------------
This install program will allow you to automate program installation.

To use DART Generic Install.
----------------------------

This install program, copies the files from floppy to hard disk, creates groups and icons in windows as appropriate and stops.

If a .Scr or .Bmp file is found, the screen saver is set to the .Scr file and the default delay is set to 10 seconds, the wallpaper is set to the .Bmp file. If more than one .Scr or .Bmp are on the disk the last one found is used.

To set up a distribution disk without using Outstall.
-----------------------------------------------------

Copy all the files you wish to be installed onto one or more floppies including INSTALL.EXE on the first disk. Make sure the Read only bit is not set on all the files except those you want installed as Icons in windows.

The disk label on all the distribution disks is important, to generate the first disk label, find the size in bytes of all the files you are distributing (not including the Install program itself), multiply this by 100 and add a two digit number to represent how many disks are in the distribution set. Use the number you arrive at as the disk label for the first disk, the subsequent disks need the single digit which represents there place in the installation order (2, 3, 4...)

That is all you need to do, when Install is run, the user can select the source drive, destination drive, destination directory and destination windows group. When the Install button is pressed all the files in the root directories of the source disks will be copied into the destination drive and directory (if the directory exists the program will ask if the user wishes to continue) and new icons are made in the specified windows group (creating it if necessary).

Using Outstall
--------------

Select the files for your distribution disks using the browser at the bottom left. As you work, Outstall will keep track of how many disks you require and which programs to put on each.

The programs are listed in the order you select them, but you can change the order by grabbing them with the mouse pointer and dragging them up and down the list.

When you are happy with what you have you can put some text in the top line which is only there for your own reference, save the project under some suitable name, and the 'MkBatch' button will become enabled. Press this and a batch file, with the same name and in the same directory as your Outstall file will be created, this can be run from the 'Run' button or from Dos, or File manager. This batch file will handle copying and labelling the distribution disks for you.

In this version, it is assumed that the target disk is a 1.44M floppy in drive A:, see below for registration details which will free this limitation.

Limitations of this version of Install.
---------------------------------------
1. All the files on the source disk must be in the root directory.
2. All files must be copied to a single destination directory.
3. Files must be as they will run, no uncompressing as they install.
4. Program Icons, must have be included in the EXE file
5. Programs installed will be given the title of the EXE file.
6. The About box, advertises Application Resource Technology Ltd.

If you want a personalised version, or some of these limitations relaxed, contact John Leith of Leith Computer Services. We will charge 10 pounds for a simple change and 20 pounds for a more complex one. So contact us and haggle.

User Adjustable Defaults.
-------------------------
When DART Generic Install is run it gives defaults for:-

Source Drive (A)
Destination Drive (C)
Destination Directory (C:\DART)
Destination Group (DART)
Tile Wallpaper T/F (True)
Screen Saver Delay (10)
Red (0)
Green (2)
Blue (2)

These can be altered using a hex editor on the INSTALL.EXE file, somewhere within INSTALL.EXE (186965 bytes from the start) you will find a block which looks like the following:-

User Adjustables.
Source Drive.>A<.
Destination Drive.>C<.
Destination Directory.C:\DART.........
Destination Group.DART.........
Tile Wallpaper T/F.True...
Screen Saver Delay..00010.
Screen Colour.
Red.>0<.
Green.>2<.
Blue.>2<

the full stops represent non printing characters, the line breaks are only there to make it more readable.

To alter the Source or Destination Drives just change the letter between the > < symbols, making sure you use a capital letter.
To alter the Directory or Group name type over the existing names, extending them by a maximum of 8 more characters.
Tile Wallpaper is either True or False for Tiled or Centred Wallpaper.
Screen Saver Delay is just a five digit number for the number of seconds you want the delay (Five digits allows more than 24 hours.)
