This program is a commercial quality crossword development kit.
This demonstration version has limitations which the real

bizXword - Quick Help
*********************

The bizXword program develops crossword puzzles and runs
under Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher using a PC with a
386CPU or higher. Puzzles you develop can be printed or
cut from bizXword and pasted in your word processor or
desktop publishing program.

On Line Help
------------
The main source of information for this program is in the
Windows online help provided with the program.

Basics
------
The primary objects of bizXword are Grids, Dictionaries,
Dictionary Lists and Crosswords.

Crosswords are built using grids and dictionary lists.
Dictionary lists contain the names of dictionaries in their
search order. A dictionary is made by scanning text files,
by entering words one at a time, or by both methods.

- Grids

A Grid is an arrangement of word numbers, rows and
columns of spaces and plugs, which a crossword grid
traditionally contains. You may make your own grids.
Grid files always have file extension GRD.

Several grids come with the program. To load and
view one of these grids select the File|Open menu
item and select "List Files of Type - Grid";
then select one of the displayed files.

To make a new grid use the File|New menu item and select
"Document Type Grid". In the dialog box shown specify
the name of the grid, its row and column sizes and its
symmetry type. When the grid appears on screen set its
spaces and plugs by placing the mouse cursor in a
grid box and pressing the left mouse button. This will
change a white square to a black square or vice versa.

- Dictionaries

A Dictionary is a list of words. The program uses them to
fill the positions in the grid when it develops crosswords
and when you request suggstions. Dictionary files always
have file extension DIC.

A dictionary named WORDS60.DIC, of approximately 60,000
words, comes with the program. Loading and making large
dictionaries usually takes several minutes. Larger
dictionaries and slower PCs require longer times.
Dictionaries opened for editing are displayed in two
consecutive alphabetical lists. Words longer than
sixteen characters are shown first and the
shorter words are shown next. A dictionary is saved to
disk in alphabetical order. It is shuffled when
listed in the dictionary list of a crossword being
developed using the "shuffle between solutions" option.

A dictionary may be built or added to by entering words
one at a time. A new dictionary is built by having the
program scan a text file and inserting its words into
the dictionary.

To make a new dictionary start with the File|New menu
item and select Document type Dictionary. To edit an
existing dictionary start with the File|Open menu
item and select "List Files of Type - Dictionary".
Opening a large dictionary is a lengthy operation.
PCs with faster clock speeds, faster hard disk speeds
and larger amounts of memory need less time for this operation.

- Dictionary Lists

A crossword requires an existing grid and a dictionary list.
When development starts words are sought from the dictionaries
in the order listed. By proceeding in this way special
purpose dictionaries are made and combined in a
dictionary list appropriate for each crossword.
Dictionary lists always have file extension DYL.

A dictionary list named ONEDICT.DYL comes with the program.

To make a dictionary list start with the File|New menu
item and select "Document Type Dictionary List". In
the dialog box that appears enter the name of your
new dictionary list. An empty list will appear
after you confirm the names. Press the insert (Ins) key
to add dictionaries to the list.

- Crosswords

Make a crossword by specifying its name, a grid and a
dictionary list. The grid and the dictionary must
exist beforehand. Crossword files always have file
extension XWD.

To make a crossword start with the File|New menu item
and select "Document Type Crossword". A dialog box will
appear in which you should enter the name of the
crossword and the names of its grid and dictionary
list. The crossword is constructed and shown after
you confirm these names.

A crossword may be developed automatically or manually.
Start automatic development by pressing the toolbar
develop button, which looks like a lightning bolt, or
by selecting the Crossword|Develop
menu item.

Before and after automatic development of a crossword
you may insert, edit and delete its words. Place the
cursor in any space in the grid and press the left
mouse button. While holding it down drag the cursor to
another space in the word you want to edit, and then
release the left button. Then edit the word you selected.

Printing and Pasting
--------------------

Print grids and crosswords directly by pressing the
printer icon button or by selecting the File|Print
menu item.

Copy them to the Windows clipboard by selecting the
Edit|Copy menu item or by pressing the Ctrl-Ins
key combination. From the clipboard paste them into
other applications, such as word processors and desktop
publishing packages. The grid or crossword is saved to
the Windows clipboard. Using the Edit|[Copy to] menu
item you may save a grid or crossword to a named
Windows "metafile" with file extension WMF.

The grid or crossword may be resized by using the
slider control on the left edge of the grid or
crossword window in the program. Its width and depth
appear in the status bar at the bottom of the
bizXword program window. These are shown in inches
or centimetres by toggling the in or cm button in
the toolbar. Select finer or coarser granularity using the
hi or lo resolution button in the toolbar.

Other instructions are in the help file BIZXWORD.HLP.
