TiffWorks by Informatik Inc.

README.TXT file
---------------

If you have downloaded this program from an Internet software
repository or an online service, it may already have been replaced
by a newer version. Please visit www.informatik.com/news.html for
upgrade news, software fixes and additional installation information.

This is a new product. It has been thoroughly tested on our equipment.
Like any new products, wider distribution may disclose bugs or
required program changes. All supporting program and library files
are included, except the vb40032.dll file, which you probably already have.
If the program does not work properly on your system configuration,
please let us know so that we can advise you as to any necessary
changes to the software setup and file placement. If you get an 'Unable to
Get File' error with first use (this may happen after you set up the
system), try a second time. If it still does not work, somnetimes,
simply restarting Windows or re-booting clears the problem. If you
cannot produce Group 4 tiff files, there is probably some conflict of
files. Please visit www.informatik.com/news.html for the latest
support questions.

The system creates TIFF or DCX files from most Windows programs
by simply selecting TiffWorks as the 'Printer Driver'. The system
will prompt you to enter the Tiff file name. The extension of
the file name (.tif or .dcx) specifies the format. If the
extension is not tif or dcx (or one of the supported formats),
or if the extension is blank, then a TIFF file is created (with
a 'tif' extension added). If Serialization is selected in the
INI file, the file extension will be changed to a numeral reflecting
the page number.

TiffWorks is compatible with both Windows 3x and Win95. An NT
version will be available soon.

For other graphics formats (e.g. bmp, gif, jpeg, gnp, pcx, eps, etc.)
please contact Informatik Inc.

Graphic images are dithered monochrome; LZW compression is not
supported.

For a 32-bit version of the program, please contact Informatik Inc.

INSTALLATION AND SETUP

1.  Start Windows.
2. Choose Run (from File menu of the File Manager or Start Button).
4. In the Command Line type one of the following:
    - If the software is on a diskette, type A:SETUP
       (assuming your floppy drive is A:).
    - If the extracted software is on the hard disk,
        type C:\DIRECTORY\SETUP (where DIRECTORY is
        the actual directory that holds the software
        files).
5.  Choose OK.
6.  Follow the prompts.

The Setup program posts the following entries to the WIN.INI
file (assuming that the program is located in the c:\tiffwk16
directory:

[PrinterPorts]
TiffWorks=fmfaxdrv,TIFFWK16,1,1

[Devices]
TiffWorks=fmfaxdrv,TIFFWK16

[FAXMAN,TIFFWK16]
Application=C:\TIFFWK16\tiffwk16.exe

[Ports]
TIFFWK16=

If the WIN.INI file gets corrupted you can refresh these entries
by running the WININI.EXE program.

WINDOWS SETTINGS

After you have installed the program review and modify the
'Printer' Settings. Proceed as follows in Windows 95
(use equivalent functions in Win 3x):

1. Depress mouse on Start button at lower left corner of screen.
2.  Select Settings
3.  Select Printers
4. Click on (highlight) Tiffworks 'printer'.
5. From File menu, choose Properties.
6.  Click on Detail Tab
7.  Click on Setup button
8. Optionally, change Paper Size and Orientation
9.  Click on Graphics Tab
10. Set Resolution to Fine Mode (200x196 dpi)
11. Optionally, specify Dithering and Intensity.
12. Press OK buttons.

Visit www.informatik.com/news.html for late breaking news.

DEFAULT SETTINGS

The default settings are specified in the TIFFWK16.INI file
in the application's directory (normally c:\TIFFWK16\).

The settings can be changed from the Preferences program
(INIedit.exe file in the application's directory) or by direct
editing of the INI file.

The initial settings are as follows:

[Settings]
Compression=4      (i.e. Group 3)
Singlestrip=1      (i.e. Singlestrip)
Serialization=0    (i.e. standard page presentation)
Defaultdir=
Filename=

For best Tiff compression you should use Group 4, but make sure
that the system files are are in the correct directories, otherwise
Group 4 Tiff files cannot be created.

Compression
-----------

	0 = No compression
	1 = LZW compression
	2 = Huffman
	3 = PackBits
	4 = Group 3 (default)
	5 = Group 4

Singlestrip
-----------

	Some Tiff readers require 'Single Strip' Tiff formats.

	0 = Multiple Strips
	1 = Single Strip (default)

DefaultDir
----------

 	Optional initial directory for the 'Save As' dialog window.

Filename
--------

	Optional 'fixed' filename for the Tiff image. The filename
	must include the full path. If the Filename is specified
	the DefaultDir will be ignored. This setting is useful if
	you want all Tiff saved under the same name for further
	macro processing or if you want a macro to specify the
	filename. The file will always be overwritten.

Serialization
-------------

	Serialization = 0
	Serialization = 1

	If the file is longer than one page, the system automatically
	creates a multipage Tiff file. If the Serialization is set to
	'1' then separate Tiff files are created for each page with
	the page number shown in the extension name, e.g. imgfile.001,
	imgfile.002, imgfile.003, etc.

HOW TO USE

To create a Tiff file from virtually any Windows application
follow these steps:

1. Make sure that the default settings are correct. When using
    the system for the first time, run the Preferences program
    (iniedit.exe) or open the Tiffwk16.ini file and verify the settings.
    (see Default Settings above)

2. After composing your document, choose the Print function,
    normally from the File menu.

3. In the Print window specify TiffWorks as the printer. Every
    application has a different layout of the Print window. If you
    cannot find the TiffWorks 'printer' then your WIN.INI file is
    not set up correctly. See the Installation and Setup section
    above.

4. When first using the system, click on the Properties button and
    verify the Resolution, Dithering and Intensity. The resolution
    should be set to 200x196. If the properties are incorrect, set
    the defaults in the Windows Setup (see Windows Settings above).

5. Press OK and Print buttons, as appropriate.

The first time you use the Tiffworks you may get an 'Unable to get
the File Name' error message. Try again, and it should work the
second time.

If you get error messages, please read the Trouble Shooting Section
below.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

If the program does not work properly ....

(Somnetimes, simply restarting Windows or re-booting the PC clears
the problem.)

1. If you get error messages, such as 'Unable to get file name' or
    'Cannot print' or messages to that effect, try a second time.
    If problem persists please restart Windows, re-boot, or
    check the location of the system/library files.

2. Check the WIN.INI file for the correct entries (see above).
    You can refresh the entries by running the WININI Edit program
    (WININI.EXE). Make sure that the referred directory path names
    are correct.

3. The following files must be in the c:\tiffwk16\ directory
    (after moving files, RESTART Windows):

	Tiffwk16.exe
	winini.exe
	iniedit.exe
	tiffwk16.ini
	imvb5.vbx
	file_id.diz
	readme.txt
	license.txt
	cmdialog.vbx *
	vbrun300.dll *
	im11fax.dil
	im11xfax.del
	faxdll.dll
	faxman1.vbx
	fmfaxdrv.drv
	im11xdcx.del
	im11tif.dil
	im11xtif.del

	* may instead be in the Windows\System directory

4. The following files must be in the c:\windows\system directory
    (after moving files, RESTART Windows):

	im11fax.dil
	im11xfax.del
	faxdll.dll
	faxman1.vbx
	fmfaxdrv.drv
	im11xtif.del
	im11xdcx.del
	imvb5.vbx
	im11tif.dil

5. For de-bugging, try to 'print' a Tiff file from another directory,
    e.g. the C:\ directory.

UN-INSTALL

The 16-bit version can be uninstalled as follows:

1.  Delete the Tiffwk16 directory
2. Remove the WIN.INI entries (see above)
3. Delete the following files from the Windows\System directory:
    (Make sure that these library files are not used by other
    programs)

        im11fax.dil
	im11xfax.del
	faxdll.dll
	faxman1.vbx
	fmfaxdrv.drv
	im11xtif.del
	im11xdcx.del
	imvb5.vbx
	im11tif.dil
