I solved your "sort engine" with the tools "StateWORKS".
The "StateWORKS" development tool is a set of programs to develop control systems.

You can specify and test control system without writing a single line of code.
"StateWORKS Tools" are based on the method Virtual Finite State Machine "VFSM".

The first trial implementation of the VFSM was made for machine control at BALZERS AG, FL
by Ferdinand Wagner (74002.2516@CompuServe.com).

The next step with the VFSM method was a pilot project at AT&T Bell Laboratories,
USA in 1990/91 (Alan R. Flora-Holmquist, James D. O'Grady, Mark G. Staskauskas).
AT&T has successfully used the VFSM method and tools on 38 5ESS software projects.

The VFSM method is now available as "StateWORKS" tools to develop complex process
control systems on Windows, Windows NT, Windows 95. The executor is also available for
Z80, 8051 and H8 processors.

To show the solution of the "sort engine" you need the "StateWORKS-Demo". Please send
a mail to the above address and you will get it.

Alfred.
