ABOUT BATCH JOB SERVER

Batch Job Server is a batch job management environment for Windows NT. It manages the queuing and execution of Windows NT batch files (batch jobs) submitted by users, programs or other host systems (Mainframes, Unix servers, etc.).

Batch Job Server is a 32-Bit Windows NT service. It can be installed on either a Windows NT server or a Windows NT workstation.

Two 32-Bit client applications, BJS Client and BJS Administrator, are included with Batch Job Server. BJS Client is used by Batch Job Server users to access Batch Job Server. It allows users to submit, monitor and control their batch jobs.

BJS Administrator is used by system administrators and server operators. In addition to the functions provided by BJS Client, it also provides functions to manage the Batch Job Server environment.

BJS Client and BJS Administrator can be installed on a Windows NT workstation (or server), a Windows 95 workstation or a Windows for Workgroups workstation.

A summary of key features for Batch Job Server is provided below.

For additional information, install BJS Administrator (see INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS below) and, after starting it, refer to the Help topic entitled "Batch Job Server Overview". For answers to frequently asked questions, refer to the "Frequently Asked Questions" Help topic (to access these Help topics, select Contents in the Help menu). To obtain product pricing information for Batch Job Server, select Sales and Service in the Help menu.

ENHANCEMENTS AND FIXES

A summary of the enhancements and fixes for this version of Batch Job Server is provided in README.TXT. This file is restored when BJSAxxx.EXE is expanded (see installation instructions below).

*********************************************************************

KEY FEATURES

Batch Job Server provides the following capabilities and advantages:

Batch file submission is allowed by local and remote users (including wide area network users, users in trusted domains and dial-up users).

Batch file submission is allowed from IBM Mainframes, Unix hosts & other NT servers (Batch Job Server is designed to simplify database replication to SQL Server and other applications requiring data transfer).

Batch job submission can be automated by having a program or another batch job copy a batch file to a Batch Job Server job directory. This can be done from another host system (by using ftp or some other file copy function), from a program (by creating a batch file in a job directory), from another batch job (by using the DOS COPY command) or on a scheduled basis using the Windows NT "AT" command or the SQL Server Task Manager (to copy the desired batch file to a job directory at a predetermined time).

A batch file's security access is restricted to that of the submitting user. In the case of job directories, access is limited to the security privileges of the designated username for the job directory.

Environment variables normally available to a batch file in a DOS Window are also available when executing as a batch job.

Access to Batch Job Server is controlled using local groups that are created on the server where the Batch Job Server service is installed.

A job log is provided for each batch job. This job log includes the time the batch job started and ended, the username used to run the batch job and the name of the batch file that was submitted. A job log includes all output (STDOUT and STDERR) from the commands and programs that are executed in the batch job. In addition, a job log can be viewed before, during or after job execution.

Users monitor and control (submit, hold, release, cancel, purge, etc.) their batch jobs via a 32-Bit Windows application (BJS Client or BJS Administrator - see ABOUT BATCH JOB SERVER above).

Users can be granted the right to view all batch jobs in the system. Access to the job log or batch file for another user's batch job and the ability to control another user's batch job requires the other user's password to be entered.

A user can connect to Batch Job Server and submit a batch job using another user's username if the correct password for the user is entered. (This would otherwise require logging off and logging on.)

It is possible to simultaneously connect to and monitor multiple Batch Job Servers.

Only Administrators and Server Operators have control over all batch jobs. Only Administrators are allowed to configure the Batch Job Server environment.

Administrators and Server Operators can modify the priority of batch jobs, both prior to and during execution.

The primary process for a batch job and all processes (programs, commands, etc.) started by a batch job are monitored. The total CPU for each active thread and for the batch job as a whole can be displayed.

When a batch job is canceled all processes for the batch job are terminated (this is not the case with most other batch file management products for Windows NT).

Batch Job Server can be configured to control batch job memory utilization and the number of concurrently executing batch jobs.

Batch Job Server can be stopped and restarted (either intentionally or unintentionally) without effecting queued or executing batch jobs.

A complete on-line, context sensitive Help system is included.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

This file (INSTALL.TXT) is one of four files that are restored when BJSxxx.ZIP (where xxx is the current version number) is unzipped. Two of the other files, BJSAxxx.EXE and BJSUxxx.EXE, are self-extracting ZIP files that contain the installation files for Batch Job Server. (FILE_ID.DIZ, the fourth file, is described below.)

BJSAxxx.EXE contains the installation files for BJS Administrator and the server components of Batch Job Server. BJSUxxx.EXE contains the installation files for BJS Client. Note that it is not necessary to install BJS Client if you are installing Batch Job Server for the first time and only wish to see how it works. In this case, you only need to install BJS Administrator and the server components of Batch Job Server.

To install Batch Job Server, place BJSAxxx.EXE and BJSUxxx.EXE in separate, empty directories and execute them at a DOS prompt. This will restore the associated installation files. Among the installation files, you will find a README.TXT file that contains further installation instructions.

Please refer to "Installing Batch Job Server (for the first time)" in the README.TXT file restored by BJSAxxx.EXE for instructions to install BJS Administrator and the server components of Batch Job Server.

If you encounter technical problems, please contact us at the telephone number or e-mail address given at the beginning of this file.
