@1ST PAL 10J = H<B>ewlett-Packard<D> has just announced its new scalable
typeface product called the <BI>Type Director<D>. The Type Director
will be competing directly with the Bitstream Fontware system and
will provide the same features to users. HP and Agfa Compugraphic
Corporation have put their resources together to provide a new system
of scalable typefaces for HP Laserjet and compatible printers.

@ART PAL 10J =

@ART PAL 10J = Type Director does not require a separate installation
package for each software package like Fontware does. Type Director
currently works with Microsoft Windows (which includes Pagemaker),
Microsoft Word, and Ventura Publisher. The font handling of many other
packages such as Wordstar 2000, Wordstar Professional 5.0, Word Perfect
5.0, and Lotus Manuscript provide automatic support for Type Director
fonts.

@ART PAL 10J =

@ART PAL 10J = The Type Director software lets you scale typefaces
from 4 to 200 points in 1/2-point increments. Type Director creates
a font from the scaled typeface. The font can then be used with the
application software and printer like any bit-mapped soft font. WYSIWYG
screen fonts are also generated for programs that support them, such
as Pagemaker and Ventura. Other font families, such as those from
Bitstream, can be accessed and managed by Type Director.

@ART PAL 10J =

@ART PAL 10J = Being a new system, Type Director does not have the
large number of typefaces available such as the Bitstream library. Currently
only three typefaces are available: CG Times and Univers 1 (in regular,
bold, italic, and bold italic); and a decorative typeface which includes
Brush, Uncial, Dom Casual, and Park Avenue. More typefaces are to
be released as the system grows and matures.

@ART PAL 10J =

@ART PAL 10J = Type Director allows you to work around the problem
of not having enough printer memory to handle large typefaces. You
can build a font with only the characters needed to do a special headline
or other effect and then download it to the printer.

@ART PAL 10J =

@ART PAL 10J = The Type Director software is menu-driven, supports
a mouse, and is very easy to use. Type Director is also much more
intuitive then Bitstream's Fontware in actual use. It also features
online help at the press of a key.

@ART PAL 10J =

@ART PAL 10J = Type Director assembles the requested fonts much quicker
than Fontware. I would still advise using an AT-class machine versus
an XT-class machine unless you have lots of time to wait. No problems
were experienced with any of the fonts produced by Type Director,
they all loaded and printed perfectly.

@ART PAL 10J =

@ART PAL 10J = HP is kicking off their new product with a special
introductory offer of the Type Director program and the three typeface
product mentioned (the Premier Collection) for just $225. The retail
price is $95 for Type Director and $195 for each typeface set. If
this sounds like the font system you've been waiting for <197> buy
it now and save $455!

@PRODUCTS = Freedom Of Press 2.0

@ART PAL 10J =

@1ST PAL 10J = A new version of <BI>Freedom of Press<D> now gives
color Postscript capacity to a variety of inexpensive printers.

@ART PAL 10J =

@ART PAL 10J = Freedom of Press 2.0 is a Postscript-compatible interpreter
based on Compugraphic's Intellifont font-scaling technology. It comes
with 35 Laserwriter-compatible outline fonts and supports popular
laser printers and 24-pin dot-matrix printers.

@ART PAL 10J =

@ART PAL 10J = The new update adds drivers for HP's Paintjet, Howtek
Pixelmaster, and AMT, Fujitsu, and NEC 24-pin printers equipped with
color conversion lits.

@ART PAL 10J =

@ART PAL 10J = It also interprets Postscript files faster than the
previous version. Generally 40% faster, sometimes as much as three
times faster! The greatest speed gains have been in text processing.

@ART PAL 10J =

@ART PAL 10J = CAI offers Freedom of Press as a low-cost alternative
to a dedicated Postscript printer for producing occassional documents.

@ART PAL 10J =

@ART PAL 10J = Freedom of Press requires 640k of RAM, 512k of expanded
memory, and a hard disk. The program costs $495, with a $45 upgrade
available to owners of the previous version.
