How to Stay Afloat in a Sea of 'Green' Information
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Environmental organizations around the world generate thousands
of books, journals, newsletters, newspapers, magazines, reports,
action alerts, press releases and videos each year. In addition,
there is now a wealth of online computer resources available.
Integrating all of these diverse media into an effective strategy
for ecological research and activism can be quite a challenge.

The GreenDisk is an innovative concept in environmental
information exchange. It provides journalists, librarians,
activists and educators with an inexpensive and comprehensive
resource documenting the work of the environmental community.
Each semi-monthly issue is a computer disk in IBM or Macintosh
format and contains the equivalent of hundreds of pages of
well-organized and timely information in a keyword searchable
format using a minimum of natural resources.

A Comprehensive Journal
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The GreenDisk covers a wide range of challenging environmental
issues such as renewable energy, marine mammal protection, toxic
waste disposal, ecosystem restoration, rainforest destruction and
ozone layer depletion.

The GreenDisk is a forum for the dissemination of information
from the world's environmental groups and governmental agencies
including:

American Rivers
Defenders of Wildlife
Ecological Society of America
Environmental Defense Fund
Friends of the Earth
Global Action Information Network
Government Accounting Office
Greater Ecosystem Alliance
Greenpeace
IUCN
National Audubon Society
National Wildlife Federation
Natural Resources Defense Council
Public Citizen
Rainforest Action Network
Save America's Forests
Sierra Club
World Wildlife Fund
Worldwatch Institute
Zero Population Growth
..... plus many others.

Each disk has a particular focus on an important environmental
issue, serving as an extensive bibliography on that topic. Past
issues have focused on:

o Trade and the Environment
o Pesticides
o Transnational Corporations
o Wilderness Recovery Strategy
o Environmental Computer Networking
o Hazardous Waste Incineration
o Jobs in a Sustainable Economy
o Conservation of Biological Diversity
o International Trade in Toxic Waste
o Chlorine: Persistent Poison
o The World Bank
o Population and Consumption
o Global Fisheries Decline
o Anti-Environmental Backlash
o Temperate Forest Ecosystem Conservation
o Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering
o The Endangered Species Act
o Depletion of the Ozone Layer
o Environmental Building & Design

Your Own Ecodatabase
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Every word of each three hundred-plus page issue of The GreenDisk
is literally at your fingertips, and not gathering dust on a
bookshelf, or taking up space in a landfill. The enclosed keyword
and phrase searching program allows you to compile an extensive
in-house database to quickly connect you with the publication,
article, author, conference or organization related to the
specific environmental issue you are researching.

Do You Hate Complicated User Interfaces?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The GreenDisk is very easy to use -- you're doing it now! Your
current word-processing software can also be used -- to browse
or print sections of The GreenDisk, and it will run on any
Macintosh or IBM compatible computer. A user-friendly interface
is also provided. Relax, we also have a toll-free user support
line.

A Reasonable Price
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The cost of conventional ecological research bibliographies can
be thousands of dollars per year -- well out of reach for most
educators and activists. Available for as little as $10 per
issue, The GreenDisk is a great value and a potent resource for
research and activism -- all in a format that uses a minimum of
natural resources.

The GreenDisk is edited by biologist William Sugg. Contributing
editors are Andre Carothers, environmental writer and activist;
Heather Spalding, Editor, _Toxic Trade Update_; and John Young,
Senior Researcher, Worldwatch Institute.

Exploring The GreenDisk
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The following will provide some very specific examples of what
you will find in each issue of The GreenDisk. Our goals are to
make you aware of the many diverse projects and organizations
that are stepping stones in the path to a sustainable biosphere,
and to empower you with the knowledge you need to become part of
the solution. We look forward to having you as a subscriber!

Each Issue A Compendium
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Approximately one-third of the contents of each GreenDisk is
devoted to one important environmental issue. Thorough background
information on the topic is given -- usually the complete text of
a research paper (including reference section) 40-60 pages in
length -- as well as a listing of organizations around the world
working on the issue, publications available, and overviews of
pending legislation and news updates. The result is that you
build a library of GreenDisks on different subjects that is an
excellent source for learning and directing further research as
well.

The timing for the theme depends on which issue is 'heating up'
in the media and with environmental organizations due to some
pending legislation, an upcoming conference or other major event.
The GreenDisk which focused on International Trade Agreements and
the Environment was released in the weeks before the vote on
NAFTA. As there were some environmental organizations for and
some against the trade pact, the full text of congressional
testimony from both camps was included. Features of that issue
included four files totaling 220K or about 110 pages on the
topic:

o _Costly Tradeoffs: Reconciling Trade and the Environment_, by
Hilary French. Worldwatch Institute Paper #113.

o An environmental scrutiny of the NAFTA and GATT, by GreenDisk
   contributing editor Andre Carothers.

o A sampling of recent news summaries from the Institute for
   Agriculture and Trade Policy.

o A collection of position statements, press releases and
listing of resources on the NAFTA and GATT.

The summer of 1994 marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of
the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF),
institutions which have been criticized by environmental and
human rights organizations for the ecological consequences of
their development policies. This anniversary was chosen as a
rallying point for groups working throughout the world on this
issue, and served as the focus of a recent GreenDisk, which
included:

o The Cuckoo in the Nest: Fifty Years of Political Meddling by
the World Bank. By Bruce Rich, author of _Mortgaging the
Earth: The World Bank, Environmental Impoverishment and the
   Crisis of Development_.

o The World Bank, IMF and the Environment. By Pratap
Chatterjee, writer, Interpress Service and Third World
   Network.

o Brave New World Bank: 50 Years is Enough! By Juliette Majot of
   the International Rivers Network.

o Recent news reports, press releases and other developments.

o A compendium of information and resources around the 50th
anniversary of Bretton Woods: listing of organizations,
calendar of events. (Compiled by the Bank Information Center)

o Platform of the U.S. "50 Years is Enough" campaign.

o Listing of Computer Resources Available on the World Bank.

Regular Features Included on Each GreenDisk

can read and search using the GreenDisk user interface.
