XSoft Division Of Xerox To Provide Multilingual Support For America
Online's Internet Tools

Software makes Internet navigation easier via natural language commands

PALO ALTO, California, September 5, 1995 -- The XSoft division of Xerox
Corporation today announced that it has teamed with America Online's
NaviSoft Software Products to provide multilingual support for the
NaviSoft suite of World Wide Web publishing products. America Online (AOL)
will incorporate XSoft's linguistic databases for English, French, and
German into its NaviPress and NaviServer products, providing a
comprehensive Web publishing system for these languages. The XSoft
software will allow NaviSoft users to navigate the Internet using familiar
natural language rather than arcane computer commands, and will also aid
in the automatic conversion of plain text into hypertext.

The suite of linguistic databases is based on patented, state-of-the-art
Xerox Lexical Technology, originally developed at Xerox PARC (Palo Alto
Research Center) and now being brought to market by XSoft. The linguistic
database products perform sophisticated natural language analysis and have
an underlying architecture that can provide support for all European
languages with a single application programming interface (API) and single
body of code.

The NaviSoft integrated Internet publishing tools enable users to prepare
hyperlinked multimedia documents, which can be authored in English or
European languages. The Xerox Lexical Technology augments the NaviPress
and NaviServer products, optimizing creation of hypertext by matching
words and their derivations, including parts of speech, tense, aspect,
mood, person, number, etc.

"XSoft and AOL share a common vision for the tools and services users need
to manage information and develop applications for the World Wide Web,"
said Daniella Russo, director of OEM channel development for XSoft. "Using
our advanced linguistic technologies, AOL makes it significantly easier
for Web authors to navigate through large volumes of information and
create content that is richly connected to the Web."

"As companies invest more heavily in online documents in today's global
business environment, the ability to support multiple languages becomes
critical," said Lydia Dobyns, vice president and general manager for
NaviSoft. "XSoft's approach to natural language processing gives our
network publishing tools a significant competitive advantage in the
expanding worldwide market."
