DIGITAL CHIEF EXECUTIVE TO DELIVER UNIX EXPO KEYNOTE

Robert B. Palmer, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of
Digital Equipment Corporation to Deliver Keynote Address at UNIX Open
Systems Show

(Fort Lee, NJ, August 29) - Robert B. Palmer, Chairman, President and CEO
of Digital Equipment Corporation, Maynard, MA, will deliver the first-day
keynote address at the Twelfth Annual UNIX EXPO, September 19-21, at the
Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. Mr. Palmer's speech
entitled, "UNIX: Creating the Future," will take place Tuesday, Sept. 19,
at 1 p.m., in the Special Events Hall.

"I'm honored to have the opportunity to address the UNIX community," Mr.
Palmer said. "The technology available today enables us to take advantage
of UNIX in ways not possible only a year ago. Building on the most recent
developments, such as the 64-bit specification initiative, UNIX can
fulfill its promise of becoming one of the leading operating environments
in the marketplace. Seizing the opportunity depends upon the industry
working together to ensure a strong and growing future by satisfying
customer requirements."

Mr. Palmer is responsible for all aspects of administration at Digital, a
leading supplier of networked computer systems, software and services. He
has been a member of the board of directors since his appointment as
President and CEO in 1992, and was elected Chairman in May of this year.

Prior to joining Digital in 1985, Mr. Palmer served as Executive Vice
President for Semiconductor Operations at United Technologies. He joined
United Technologies in 1980, when they acquired Mostek Corporation, a
company he co-founded in 1969 with a group of fellow engineers from Texas
Instruments. Mr. Palmer's technical accomplishments at Mostek include
developing a TTL-compatible (transistor-transistor logic) MOS integrated
circuit production process, for which he shares a patent. The process has
been recognized by the Semiconductor Equipment Manufacturing Institute as
one of the most significant developments in the integrated circuit
industry. Mr. Palmer earned a bachelor of science degree in mathematics
with high honors and a masters of science degree in physics from Texas
Tech University.

UNIX EXPO will showcase all aspects of UNIX/Open Systems computing and the
exhibit floor will feature two pavilions focusing on enterprise
solutions--the Unix Solutions Pavilion sponsored by Novell and the
UNIX/Windows NT Interoperability Pavilion.

UNIX EXPO will also debut two new conference tracks--Enterprise Integration
and Client/Server Applications--as part of the comprehensive UNIX EXPO
Corporate Education and Training Program, with 17 tutorials, nine
workshops and more than 62 seminars. For the first time, UNIX EXPO will
feature a day-long Object-Oriented Technology Symposium on Monday,
September 18, prior to the show.

UNIX EXPO will feature more than 420 exhibitors at this year's event
including: American Power Conversion, AT&T, BBN Technology Services,
Cheyenne, Computer Associates, Digital Equipment Corp., Fujitsu,
Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Information Builders, Microsoft, Network General,
Novell, Pencom, Silicon Graphics, Siemens Nixdorf, Sun Microsystems,
Tektronix, UNISYS, UnixWare Technology Group, UniDirect and X/Open.

After last year's successful launch, the Internet Village is expected to
feature 50 exhibitors of Internet services, products and solutions and the
Internet Hands-On Theater, where UNIX EXPO attendees will receive an
introduction to key Internet technologies and software. In the E-Mail
Village Green, sponsored by Digital, attendees can access their favorite
