OpenGL Adopted by Hewlett-Packard

Silicon Graphics-Developed Standard Pervades Industry; HP Joins Growing
List of Licensees

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (September 6, 1995) - Silicon Graphics, Inc. (NYSE:
SGI) today announced that Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP) has licensed
OpenGL, Silicon Graphics' premiere application programming interface (API)
for developing 2D and 3D graphics applications. Hewlett- Packard (HP)
joins 34 other leading companies, from personal computer to supercomputer
vendors, which have licensed the OpenGL API.

"Silicon Graphics is pleased that HP has finally joined the ranks of IBM,
DEC, Intel, Sun and Microsoft," said David E. Orton, vice president and
general manager of Silicon Graphics' Advanced Systems Division, "to round
out the set of the world's largest computer companies in support of
Silicon Graphics OpenGL API. OpenGL now stands as the most broadly
endorsed standard for the development of advanced multimedia and 3D-rich
visual applications."

As the leader in computer graphics and visual computing technology since
its founding in 1984, Silicon Graphics developed OpenGL from its
proprietary IRIS Graphics Library, recognized worldwide as the industry's
richest and most advanced graphics software library. Supporting more
graphics applications than any other computer systems vendor, Silicon
Graphics is the leading supplier of high-performance workstation solutions
to the animation, film and video, visual simulation and scientific
visualization markets.

By aggressively driving its most powerful graphics technology into
innovative, affordable systems, Silicon Graphics continues to define the
direction of visual computing systems from desktop workstations to
supercomputers. Silicon Graphics licensed OpenGL to hardware and software
companies to promote visual computing solutions based upon its innovative
graphics library technology.

Applications based on the OpenGL API are used by professionals in many
fields, including architecture, product design, color publishing, medical
imaging, computer animation, multimedia, scientific visualization and
mechanical computer-aided design. Companies that have adopted OpenGL
include 3Dlabs, AccelGraphics, Cray Research, Digital Equipment, Evans &
Sutherland, Harris Computer, Hitachi, IBM, Intel, Intergraph, Microsoft,
NCD, NEC, Portable Graphics, Samsung, Sony, SunSoft and Template
Graphics.

An evolution of Silicon Graphics' IRIS GL API, OpenGL is a rich, mature 3D
graphics API that allows PC, workstation and supercomputing software
developers to create high quality color images of 3D objects. OpenGL is a
rendering only, vendor neutral API providing 2D and 3D graphics functions,
including modeling, transformation, color, lighting and smooth shading, as
well as advanced features like texture mapping, NURBS, fog, alpha blending
and motion blur. Window system and operating system independent, OpenGL is
also network transparent. Licensees may implement OpenGL as an extension
to native windowing systems, such as X Window System or Microsoft Windows
NT.

The OpenGL API is controlled by an independent committee, the Architecture
Review Board (ARB). The ARB governs the future direction of the OpenGL
API, proposing and approving changes to the specification, new releases
and conformance testing. ARB's permanent members are Digital Equipment,
Evans & Sutherland, IBM, Intel, Intergraph, Microsoft and Silicon
Graphics.

Silicon Graphics, Inc. is the leading manufacturer of high-performance
visual computing systems. The company delivers interactive three-
dimensional graphics, digital media and multiprocessing supercomputing
technologies to technical, scientific and creative professionals. Its
subsidiary, MIPS Technologies, Inc., designs and licenses the industry's
leading RISC processor technology for the computer systems and embedded
control markets. Silicon Graphics has offices worldwide and headquarters
in Mountain View, California.
