Schematic 3 Ships!

August 21, 1995, Santa Clara, CA

Protel Technology is now shipping Schematic 3, the first of a series of new
design tools based upon the company's revolutionary EDA/Client
architecture. The new version preserves all the functionality of the
previous releases of the company's popular schematic entry system while
adding a user-definable editing environment with unmatched support for
third party tool integration.

Key features of Schematic 3 include OLE2.0 automation links, macro language
support with an integrated text editor, two scripting languages for macro
development and direct access to design object parameters from within menu
and tool button processes. These powerful tools allow the users to create
"Wizards" for automating complex design entry tasks that include run-time
user interaction. EDA/Client technology provides a single environment for
editing multiple types of EDA documents including schematic sheets, parts
libraries, macros and HDL text files. Compound projects, containing
multiple documents from various EDA processes, including schematic files,
text files, libraries and the results from third party tool simulations or
compilations will be displayed and managed using graphical project
management tools which are built into this updated editing platform. This
provides users with an unparalleled approach to managing the complexity of
multi-tool/multi-document electronics design.

To make Schematic 3 more adaptable to diverse customer environments, the
company has included extensibility features that support external
processing of EDA data. Schematic 3 includes a Visual Basic compliant
editing language, called Client Basic and a second scripting language,
Client Pascal, a subset of this popular structured language. Both
languages support macro creation, Wizard creation and creating links to
other applications. OLE 2.0 and DLL support is also part of Protel's
EDA/Client architecture. An API (Applications Programming Interface)
specification for EDA/Client is currently under development and will be
made available to users and third-party developers as soon as it's
released.

Schematic 3 has a suggested retail price of US$995. This version is
available as an upgrade to earlier versions of Advanced Schematic for
US$295 (USA/Canada customers, excludes taxes, shipping and handling). For
a limited time, qualified users of OrCAD SDT can purchase a competitive
upgrade to Schematic 3 for $295. Contact Protel for details at 1-
