Lotus Ships Lotus VideoNotes 1.1

New video distribution, support for Windows NT, MPEG file type and Notes
/FX

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Aug. 28, 1995 - Lotus Development Corp. today announced
the availability of Lotus VideoNotes 1.1, a multimedia extension to Notes
that incorporates stored digital video into Notes documents and allows
Notes users to capture, record, edit, play and distribute full-motion
video in Notes documents. With VideoNotes 1.1, video is integrated into
Notes documents and is easily shared across the enterprise creating a new
class of applications.

The new release features significant enhancements, including new video
distribution capabilities, expanded video server support, Notes/FX
integration, support for additional multimedia file types, and improved
editing features. With VideoNotes, stored video can be accessed,
categorized and distributed over local and wide-area networks just as any
other data type in Notes. The VideoNotes Site Manager Server provides a
secure, flexible replication and distribution model that minimizes storage
and access problems associated with large video objects. Actual video
clips are stored on the video server. From the desktop, the user simply
clicks on the video icon in Notes' familiar UI and the video is played.

"Increasingly, video is becoming an important element of a comprehensive
computing solution. VideoNotes is unique in that it allows organizations
to integrate a new and exciting business communications medium into their
existing business applications, thereby realizing the goal of making video
available on everyone's desktop in an integrated and cost-effective
manner," said Jeffrey Papows, vice president of the Lotus Communications
Business Group. "With these new enhancements, VideoNotes 1.1 provides
businesses of all sizes with an easy and efficient way to access stored
digital video through Lotus Notes, creating a whole new class of
communications applications."

Sample VideoNotes applications include an advertising agency's creation of
TV commercials. Agencies can build Notes workflow applications that easily
send sample video clips for internal and external client approvals and
creative feedback, eliminating the need to physically mail videotapes. An
insurance company can use VideoNotes to build an insurance application
that will combine video with policies on insured properties for easy
access, distribution and review. A parts supply company can use VideoNotes
to demo new installation procedures and thus improve customer service.

New Video Publishing Features with CD-ROM distribution and Notes/FX

VideoNotes 1.1 allows easy distribution of video data from CD-ROM, making
custom VideoNotes-based applications possible. Once video is moved off a
CD-ROM and stored in a video server, publishers of video training, for
example, can make their products easily available to VideoNotes users.
VideoNotes 1.1 also features new Notes/FX integration, providing users
with seamless Notes interoperability. With Notes/FX support, every time a
user creates a new video clip file, the properties are stored in the Notes
database. This allows for the easy creation of video catalogs that can be
used to manage and archive large video collections.

"VideoNotes gives us an easy-to-use platform to deliver our training
material, regardless of whether the user has a CD-ROM drive or not," said
Walter Schoustal, president of Multimedia Solutions, Inc., of Calgary, a
video training developer. "With the high cost of classroom training, we
feel that businesses will continue to expand on desktop training programs.
VideoNotes is the right vehicle to deliver Notes-based training
incorporating digital video."

Support for Additional Video Servers

VideoNotes 1.1 expands on the number of supported video servers. In
addition to support for the Novell and Starlight Networks video servers,
VideoNotes now supports IBM OS/2 LAN Server Ultimedia, Windows NT and
First Virtual Corporation's Media Server. The added support for Windows NT
allows deployment of video to smaller Notes workgroups at a very low cost,
since the NT server can act as both a video server and VideoNotes Site
Manager.

VideoNotes 1.1 has also expanded its support for industry standard
multimedia files types such as MPEG, Apple's Quicktime (MOV), Video for
Windows (AVI) and Windows sound (WAV) files.
