Intel Announces the 83-MHz Pentium OverDrive Processor

$299 Processor Upgrade for Today's and Tomorrow's Operating Systems and
Applications

FOLSOM, Calif., Sept. 11, 1995 -- Intel Corporation today announced the
availability of the 83-MHz Pentium OverDrive processor upgrade, designed
for 66-MHz IntelDX2 and 33-MHz Intel486 CPU-based systems.

"Now more Intel486 CPU-based PC users will be able to upgrade to Pentium
processor technology," said Jim Yasso, general manager of Intel's End User
Components Division. "This new 83-MHz Pentium OverDrive processor serves
the largest share of the Intel486 CPU-based PC market, offering users the
highest performance CPU upgrade available at very affordable pricing."

BETTER PERFORMANCE MAXIMIZES SOFTWARE INVESTMENT

In addition to enhancing the performance of today's operating systems and
16-bit applications, the new Pentium OverDrive processor supports more
demanding operating systems such as Windows 95*, Windows NT*, and OS/2
WARP*; emerging communications and multi-tasking applications; as well as
games and other multimedia software.

"New business applications and games are fueling the demand for higher
processing power," said Yasso. "Business and home PC users alike are
concerned about getting the most performance from their system for today's
applications as well as preparing for future software requirements."

TECHNOLOGY AND PERFORMANCE

The 83-MHz Pentium OverDrive processor is based on 3.3 volt, .6 micron
Pentium processor technology. It features the same core technology as the
Pentium processor, including superscalar architecture, branch prediction
and a faster math coprocessor. In addition, the Pentium OverDrive
processor features other silicon and package enhancements designed to
deliver Pentium processor performance to existing Intel486 CPU-based
systems. These enhancements include a larger 32-KB on- chip cache, a
redesigned bus interface unit, an on-package voltage regulator, a fan
heatsink and a 5:2 core:bus ratio, that operates the OverDrive processor
at two and a half times the speed of the system bus.

The Pentium OverDrive processor delivers a substantial performance increase
to most upgradable Intel486 CPU-based systems. It has an iCOMP(R) index of
581(1), representing a 96 percent increase over a 66-MHz IntelDX2
CPU-based system with an iCOMP index of 297. The term iCOMP stands for
Intel's Comparative Microprocessor Performance Index and reflects the
relative performance of Intel microprocessors. The higher the iCOMP
rating, the greater the performance. Though performance results will vary
with each system and application, an upgraded 66-MHz IntelDX2 CPU-based
system will realize more than a 50 percent performance increase in most
typical applications. Performance results will depend on the system
configuration and the applications used.

(1) Note: The Pentium OverDrive processor iCOMP index ratings are for
processors running in write-back mode. Intel486 processor-based systems
that implement write-through mode will yield approximately 15% lower iCOMP
index ratings.

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

The 83-MHz Pentium OverDrive processor is shipping now with a manufacturer
suggested list (MSL) price of $299 (U.S.). New, lower prices for other
members of the OverDrive processor upgrade family are:

63-MHz Pentium OverDrive Processor $279 (U.S.) was $299
100-MHz IntelDX4 OverDrive Processor $229 (U.S.)
75-MHz IntelDX4 OverDrive Processor $179 (U.S.)

Pricing for both IntelDX2 OverDrive processors remain the same with the
50-MHz version priced at $149 and the 66-MHz version priced at $159. For
continually updated pricing information, refer to the U.S. Price List. For
pricing and availability outside the United States, contact a regional
Intel sales office. Phone numbers are listed in the Worldwide Customer
Information and Support Network.

COMPATIBILITY AND SUPPORT

The 83-MHz Pentium OverDrive processor will upgrade most Intel486 CPU-based
systems with a 237- ('Socket 3') or a 238-pin ('Socket 2') socket. For
information on whether or not a specific system supports an OverDrive
processor, contact your system manufacturer, local computer
dealer/reseller or check the Intel OverDrive(R) Processor Upgrade Guide
which contains over 5200 system model listings.
