COBUILD is the Collins-Birmingham University International Language
Database

An authoritative and informative description of today's real English.

The COBUILD team is continually working on new projects aimed at
demystifying the English language. The Bank of English contains around 211
million words (including textbooks, novels, guides, magazines, ephemera,
and 14.5 million words of transcribed natural speech) and continues to
grow, making it the most authoritative source available for research into
today's English. COBUILD English Collocations on CD-ROM allows learners
and teachers of English to get even more from the COBUILD data.

Research at COBUILD over the last decade has shown that very large samples
of text are necessary for good linguistic study, since the vocabulary of
English is so large (well over half a million different words) and there
is such a variety in current usage. In order to draw statistically valid
conclusions from computerised analysis of a corpus, researchers need to
have adequate data samples at their disposal.
