CISCO SYSTEMS, FORE SYSTEMS AND NEWBRIDGE NETWORKS PARTICIPATE IN
MULTIVENDOR, ATM INTEROPERABILITY DEMONSTRATION

ARIES PROJECT REVOLUTIONIZES THE PROCESS OF ENERGY EXPLORATION AND
PRODUCTION

San Jose, Calif., (September 12, 1995) - Networking systems vendors Cisco
Systems, Inc., FORE Systems, Inc. and Newbridge Networks today announced
their participation in a multivendor demonstration of Asynchronous
Transfer Mode (ATM) technology. The demonstration is part of the ATM
Research and Industrial Enterprise Study (ARIES) project, a joint
development of member companies of the American Petroleum Institute that
will explore the capabilities of ATM technology to revolutionize the
process of energy exploration and production. The demonstration will take
place during NASA's Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS)
Results conference at the Stouffer Renaissance Hotel in Cleveland, Ohio,
on September 13, 1995.

ARIES is supported by a network that demonstrates interoperability between
Cisco System's LightStream 2020, FORE System's ForeRunner ASX-200 and
Newbridge Network's 36150 Main Street ATMnet Access ATM switches. The
network will link high-speed digital satellites to ships at sea and data
processing centers on land. This demonstration is the second in a series
building toward a fully interactive digital information transfer that will
support U.S defense, weather forecasting and natural resource exploration
and production applications.

"This project illustrates the ability to form partnerships among private
and public sectors to tackle complex technical challenges," said David
Beering, ARIES project director. "ATM technology will allow us to deploy
the type of network needed to support our real-time, graphics-intensive
applications. With the support of vendors like Cisco, FORE and Newbridge,
we are confident of meeting our objectives. "

COST SAVINGS

In order to reduce the risks and costs associated with finding and
developing new sources of energy, the global energy industry relies on
joint ventures in exploration and production. The current process involves
the collection of data (which is stored on tape media), transfer of the
data to a processing center and delivery to the joint venture partners for
further processing. This method is costly, time consuming and often delays
the decision-making process. The use of a high-speed ATM communication
network represents a potential savings of tens of millions of dollars per
year.

ATM networks offer a number of significant advantages, including scalable
bandwidth, virtual networking and integrated traffic support. ATM
technology's connection-orientation and self-routing capabilities support
high-speed switching and minimize network delays. The worldwide market for
ATM equipment and services will grow to more than $4.5 billion by 1997,
according to Gartner Group, a Stamford, Conn., consultancy.
