DIGITAL ANNOUNCES NEW AUTHENTICATION SERVER FOR ENHANCED NETWORK SECURITY

Industry Leader In Price & Support

MAYNARD, Mass. -- September 18, 1995 -- Digital Equipment Corporation today
announced Version 1.0 of the Digital Authentication Server, a new software
product which provides enhanced network authentication service and
security for workstation users operating in an open network computing
environment.

The Digital Authentication Server provides network authentication service
to user, servers and client programs based on the Kerberos protocol.

It uses DES encryption to do private key encryption of service keys,
ensuring that entities are authentic. All of this is managed centrally by
a Kerberos server so the system administrator can manage the entire
security environment from any UNIX machine.

The Digital Authentication Server includes:

     - Master server
     - Administration facility
     - Slave server(s)
     - Password management tools
     - User and administration tools
     - Development libraries

The Digital Authentication Server is available immediately worldwide, and
is priced at $9,100 for a typical configuration consisting of one master
server, one slave server, 10 UNIX Clients, and 20 PC clients.

With its price at $9,100 along with a full year of warranty support, the
Digital Authentication Server is about 10 percent less costly than the
competition, and has a set of password features not available from the
competition.

Digital is the only company to offer a full 12 months of telephone support
for this configuration and price.

"The release of the Digital Authentication Server answers a critical need
in the growing network authentication and security marketplace," said John
Rando, Digital's Vice President and General Manager, Multivendor Customer
Services. "It provides an extra level of security beyond the firewall to
further tighten any distributed UNIX/PC computing environment, and enables
customers to significantly lower the cost of ownership and management of
their distributed computing infrastructure. No other company can provide
this level and scope of secure connectivity on a global basis," Rando
added.

As a system administration tool, the Digital Authentication Server offers
centralized management of user passwords. It also eliminates the passing
of clear-text passwords over unsecure networks. The Kerberos development
environment enables the creation of network-secure client/server
applications.

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open client/server
solutions from personal computing to integrated worldwide information
systems. Digital's scalable Alpha platforms, storage, networking, software
and services, together with industry- focused solutions from business
partners, help organizations compete and win in today's global
marketplace.
