Chiron chooses Chem-X for Combinatorial Chemistry

Chemical Design is delighted to announce that Chiron Corporation has
recently joined the Combinatorial Chemistry Special Interest Group. This
group is responsible for steering the development of powerful and
innovative tools for drug discovery in the new ChemDiverse module of
Chem-X. The computational group at Chiron is excited about working with
Chemical Design and expects ChemDiverse to complement its own in-house
software tools.

Chiron Corporation is a biotechnology company, with headquarters in
Emeryville, CA. Chiron is building a healthcare business that addresses
needs in several markets: diagnostics, including immunodiagnostics and new
quantitative tests based on nucleic acid probe technology; adult and
pediatric vaccines; therapeutics, with an emphasis on oncology,
endocrinology and serious infectious and other diseases requiring critical
care; and ophthalmology.

Chiron's drug discovery research and development programs apply integrated
approaches to drug design and discovery. The group uses broad,
proprietary, state-of-the art technology and computational strategies in
both chemical and biological means of generating molecular diversity.
Chiron's computational efforts in the field of molecular diversity include
novel approaches for selecting, designing and optimizing chemical and
biological diversity libraries. Chiron also has developed approaches to
managing chemical and biological diversity library data.

Chemical Design's Combinatorial Chemistry Special Interest Group was
established this year in conjunction with a number of leading
pharmaceutical and agrochemical organisations. Contributions from existing
group members including Glaxo-Wellcome, Organon and Rhone-Poulenc Rorer
ensure that ChemDiverse meets the requirements of today's industry for
reduced discovery timescales and costs, while continuing to explore vast
numbers of diverse molecules for new lead compounds. The requirements of
group members have already resulted in the development of key features of
ChemDiverse including novel reagent searching, library diversity analysis
and design, and enhanced pharmacophore identification capabilities.
Chemical Design welcomes Chiron Corporation's input to future
developments.

ChemDiverse is the latest additional module for Chem-X, Chemical Design's
innovative discovery software. Chem-X is currently used by over 700
research sites world-wide. The software is best known for its 3D database
searching where Chemical Design has demonstrated technology two years
ahead of the competition. Its advanced capabilities are proven for
success, yielding new patentable drugs now in development.
