MICROCOM AND BANYAN SYSTEMS PARTNER TO DELIVER ENTERPRISE REMOTE ACCESS,
MOBILE COMPUTING SOLUTIONS

TECHNOLOGY COMBINATION EXPANDS CUSTOMERS' GLOBAL REMOTE ACCESS
CAPABILITIES

Norwood, Mass., * September 5, 1995 * Microcom, Inc. (NASDAQ: MNPI), a
worldwide leading provider of remote network access solutions, and Banyan
Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: BNYN), the worldwide leading supplier of enterprise
networking services with an installed base of more than three million
users, today announced a strategic partnership in which the two companies
provide their Fortune 1000 customers with innovative remote access and
mobile computing solutions.

The companies are seeking to optimize integration of Microcom's LANexpress
remote access solution in VINESR, ENSR for UNIX, and ENS for NetWare
environments. Recently awarded the "Max Award" (Communications Week, Aug.
21, 1995) for the best remote LAN access product, LANexpress is a
reliable, dedicated, remote access solution delivering 115.2 Kbps
performance simultaneously across all ports, and supporting VINES as well
as TCP/IP and IPX/SPX protocols. It allows Banyan users remote
connectivity to Banyan services, including messaging, workflow and
database access.

"This partnership will ensure the availability of the highest performing
third party remote access solutions available today, ultimately
reinforcing `REDWOOD,' the Company's three year vision," said Mike Wixon,
director of partnerships, Banyan Systems. REDWOOD is Banyan's strategic
direction to create an extended enterprise environment through which
customers can `Click to Information,' conduct `Business on Mail,' and
deploy `Self-managing Networks.'

"The partnership will enhance Banyan's leadership in the remote access
market space, and deliver robust, easy to use, manageable solutions to
enterprise networks. By leveraging our combined technology expertise with
Microcom, we can meet our customer requirements while ensuring a solid
migration path for future higher performance remote access products," said
Wixon.

The collaboration is targeted at Fortune 1000 companies with an installed
Banyan customer base, and to future Banyan and Microcom customers, who
require high performance when remotely accessing information on the
corporate LAN or via online services, such as the Internet and the
Microsoft Network.

In the future, the companies will jointly expand existing remote access
solutions, enabling enterprise customers to leverage Banyan's superior
enterprise network services and Microcom's advanced remote access
solutions when deploying information technology to their end users.

"We recognize Banyan's excellent networking software architecture for
supporting their remote access customers," said Robert Lamkin, vice
president, strategic relationships, Microcom. "We look forward to working
with Banyan to provide their customers with the best remote access
solutions available, as well as grow our own LANexpress customer base.

"Over the past 18 months, we have focused our research and development
efforts toward producing and polishing our LANexpress product aimed at
those potential customers who require high performance and flexible
solutions. By delivering a highly integrated, secure remote access
solution that incorporates key customer requirements, such as the ability
to operate in a multiprotocol environment, sophisticated management
capabilities and ease of use functions, we have provided Banyan with an
extemely competitive solution," Lamkin added.
