Apple Announces PowerPC Upgrade for PowerBooks

Affordable Upgrades Give Current Customers PowerPC Processor Option

CUPERTINO, California--August 28, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced aggressively priced PowerPC microprocessor upgrade options for
current Apple Macintosh PowerBook Duo 200 and PowerBook 500 series
customers. Both upgrades employ 100 MHz PowerPC processors, giving current
customers the same level of processor performance as the new
PowerPCprocessor-based PowerBook models, also announced today. By making
these affordable upgrades available, Apple is helping its customers
preserve their PowerBook investments, while also keeping them in the
vanguard of notebook computing technology.

"With this upgrade, our customers can protect their investments in
Macintosh technology," said Steve Andler, senior director of Apple's
mobile systems product marketing. "We promised our 200 and 500 series
customers a PowerPC processor upgrade option, and today, we're delivering
on that commitment. Because we want all of our customers to enjoy the
benefits of high-performance PowerPC processors, we expect these upgrades
to start at less than U.S. $700."

With these upgrade options, customers can extend their investments in
memory. Because both upgrades come with 8 MB of DRAM on their respective
boards, the RAM slot on upgraded PowerBook systems remains open. This lets
customers extend their RAM investments by simply having their existing
memory expansion cards transferred to the slot when the upgrade is
installed. Customers can also purchase new cards at the time of the
upgrade, expanding memory to a maximum of 40MB for 500 series models, and
56MB for 200 series subnotebooks.

By adding the PowerPC processor to their current PowerBook computers,
customers will gain the power to run new applications that take advantage
of the PowerPC processor, including complex graphics, page layout,
technical, and sophisticated presentation programs that they couldn't run
effectively on a notebook before. And by using Insignia Solutions'
SoftWindows for PowerPC, customers will be able to work in DOS/Windows
environments without switching computers. Overall, customers should see a
performance increase of two to four times over their previous PowerBook
computers, depending on the task and application.

The Macintosh PowerBook Logic Board Upgrade Kit with PowerPC 603e for
Macintosh PowerBook Duo 200 series

This PowerPC processor upgrade for 200 Series PowerBook Duo models is a
full, 100 MHz PowerPC 603e processor logic board upgrade, with 8MB of DRAM
installed on the board. With the upgrade installed, all current PowerBook
200 series customers will receive the same levels of processor performance
as buyers of the new PowerBook Duo 2300 series, while retaining their hard
drives, displays, and compatibility with docks and peripherals.

The Macintosh PowerBook Processor Card Upgrade Kit with PowerPC 603e for
the Macintosh PowerBook 500 series

This PowerPC processor upgrade for 500 Series PowerBook models is a 100 MHz
PowerPC 603e processor-based daughtercard upgrade that replaces the
68LC040 processor daughtercard in current 500 series PowerBook computers.
It includes 8MB of DRAM installed on the daughtercard. With the upgrade
installed, current 500 series customers can expect to see an increase in
processor performance, 2-4 times that of their 500 series models,
depending on the application used.

These upgrades are to be installed by a qualified Apple service provider,
and will be available from Apple resellers and service centers beginning
in mid-October. The upgrade kit for the 200 series is expected to be
priced in the range of U.S. $1,199-$1,299. The upgrade kit for the 500
series carries an estimated selling price of U.S. $699-$749. These PowerPC
processor upgrades--which include a 4MB DRAM upgrade, a $200 value--will
keep today's PowerBook customers on the leading edge of notebook
computing, will preserve their DRAM investments, and will do so at a very
affordable price.
