New Macintosh PowerBook 190 Series Hits Aggressive Price Points With an
Array of Features, While Offering Easy Upgrade to PowerPC RISC Technology

A Complete Product Today That Can Grow With Customers Tomorrow

CUPERTINO, California--August 28, 1995--Offering performance and feature
sets previously found only in its top-of-the-line PowerBook 500 series,
Apple Computer, Inc. today announced the PowerBook 190 and 190cs notebook
computers. Driving price and value to consistently more competitive
levels, Apple's novel PowerBook 190 series offers a complete notebook
solution with extensive expansion and upgradability options at a very
affordable price. With prices starting as low as U.S. $1,649, the new
models are targeted specifically toward customers in the small business,
home office, higher education and home markets as well as to first-time
PowerBook buyers. The new computers are expected to be available in stores
in mid-October.

"Offering high performance and an array of expansion options, including an
upgrade to PowerPC processor, the PowerBook 190 is very competitively
priced and offers a complete solution without compromise," said Steve
Andler, Apple's senior director mobile systems product marketing. "Apple's
primary goal in fashioning this product was to deliver a full-featured
system at an affordable price while also allowing price-conscious
customers the flexibility of building their system over time, as their
personal workstyle needs change."

PowerBook 190/190cs: The Most Affordable PowerBook

Boasting the same design and form factor as the PowerBook 5300 series, the
new PowerBook 190 series computers also support many of the same
industry-standard features as the new 5300 models. For example, built-in
PC Card slots, capable of holding two Type II- or one Type III-size PC
Card, gives customers a wide variety of communication and expansion
options, including hard drives, high-speed modems and networking cards.
Since compatibility is a key issue for many customers, they can easily
swap many of their Wintel PC Cards directly into their PowerBook 190's PC
Card slot and continue their work without reconfiguring the system. A
removable floppy drive comes standard with all 190 models. When the floppy
drive is removed, the open expansion bay can be filled with a number of
third- party options that are expected to be available at product launch,
including magneto-optical drives, removable hard drives and AC adaptors.
All of these modules will be interchangeable between the 190 and 5300
series PowerBooks.

"By offering a full-featured notebook computer at this price point, Apple
is simplifying the buying decision for its PowerBook customers," said
Pieter Hartsook, editor of The Hartsook Letter. "Users only need to buy
the features and performance they require today. If budgets are tight, the
190cs provides an uncompromised, color notebook today at a very attractive
price. And best of all, customers are guaranteed an incrementally seamless
upgrade from the least expensive model to the top-of-the-line."

The PowerBook 190 and 190cs models are built for people on the go who need
a full-featured notebook at a very affordable price. Features of the 190
series include a 66/33 MHz Motorola 68LC040 processor and a 10.4-inch,
dual-scan color or 9.5-inch, passive-matrix grayscale display. With the
190 series, Apple has made its advanced trackpad pointing device even more
intuitive by offering users the ability to "tap," "double-tap," and "drag"
directly on the trackpad, without clicking on the button below.

Bundled software on the PowerBook 190 and 190cs models lets customers work,
play or go on-line without purchasing any additional software. Some of the
software titles bundled on the Powerbook 190 series include ClarisWorks
4.0 (depending on region), eWorld (which includes a world-wide web
browser), password security, compatibility and communications software,
on-line documentation and games, including Eric's Solitaire Sampler and
two new titles licensed from Callisto Corporation: Spin Doctors, an arcade
game, and Super Maze Wars, a network-aware battle game.

Upgrading the PowerBook 190 Series

Over time, customers can choose to enhance their systems through upgrades
that give the features and performance of the PowerBook 5300 series. These
upgrades include:

-- PowerPC processor (through a logic board swap)
-- 10.4 inch active-matrix color display
   (requires PowerPC processor upgrade)
-- Lithium-ion batteries
-- Infrared technology for communications
-- Video-out
