AGILE NETWORKS TO DELIVER DISTRIBUTED LAN EMULATION

-- Company Couples ATM LAN Emulation to Automated Virtual LAN Capability
--

BOXBOROUGH, Mass., August 28 -- Agile Networks, a leading vendor of ATM
local backbone networks, today committed to deliver a distributed LAN
Emulation capability across its ATMizer product family by Q4 1995.

LAN Emulation provides a simple means for operating existing LAN
applications in an ATM environment. The standard allows users to
transparently add high-performance ATM switches to existing LAN-based
networks for performance benefits without making any changes to their
existing investments in internetworking equipment or applications.

Like others, Agile is implementing the LAN Emulation client in each of its
Ethernet switches. However, unlike centralized route server-based LAN
Emulation

implementations, Agile is implementing the ATM Forum's LAN Emulation
services in each ATMizer as well. This ensures LAN Emulation services are
neither a single point of failure nor performance bottleneck on a local
backbone.

In addition, the company is the first to implement Layer 3 intelligence in
the LAN Emulation server. Agile has coupled the distributed LAN Emulation
service

with its intelligent relational LAN management software, resulting in an
intelligent Relational BUS (Broadcast/Unknown Server) capability. A
Relational BUS is one that forwards broadcast and multicast traffic on the
basis of protocol and subnetwork address to ensure broadcasts only go to
Ethernet and ATM endstations in the same relational LAN. This helps
network administrators improve the performance and administration of local
backbone networks.

ATM endstations, routers, workstations, servers and edge devices that run
the ATM Forum's LAN Emulation V1.0 standard can now directly attach to
Agile's ATMizer 125 ATM switch.

Founded in November 1991, Agile Networks builds high performance, high
availability local ATM backbone networks for department, building and
campus environments. The company's award-winning products provide the
industry's only automated virtual LAN capability, based on intelligent
Layer 3 switch software that automatically learns about endstations and
connects them to correct virtual LANs based upon their protocol type and
subnetwork address.
